Don't think I've ever seen Mike smile so much at Phish shows as I did during this run. Makes me feel good not just about Phish in the present, but future-Phish as well.

It's fucking great to be alive, ladies and gentlemen, and if you do not believe it is fucking great to be alive, you better go now, because this show will bring you down so much.

Love that quote! Though sometimes I attain that grateful feeling through the course of a Phish show. Difference between Phish and Zappa I suppose.

Twenty years ago today I first saw Phish live as they took the stage at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center outside of Buffalo NY:

08-14-97 Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Darien Center, NY

Soundcheck: Buffalo Bill, The Old Home Place, Funky Bitch

1: Ya Mar, Funky Bitch, Fluffhead, Limb By Limb, Free, Cars Trucks Buses, Tela, Train Song, Billy Breathes, Run Like an Antelope

2: Chalk Dust Torture, Love Me*, Sparkle, Harry Hood, Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Merry Pranksters' Bozo Madness#-> Camel Walk, Taste

E: Bouncing Around the Room, Rocky Top

*For Elvis Week. #This segment was dominated by the stage presence of Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Colonel Forbin doesn't meet Icculus this time but rather finds "Ken Uncle Sam Bozo Kesey" (or something near that). At this time Kesey, dressed as Uncle Sam, appears on the stage and accounces that the Bozos have been missing for two years but are on Phish tour now. He calls one by one the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and Frankenstein (Phish breaks into "Frankenstein") to help him find the Bozos, which soon appear as four white things in costume. After singing about the Bozos which are doing interpretive dance, the Pranksters all leave the stage after Kesey hears the "Bozo Mockingbird". Trey comments that this is what happens "after you do too much acid 30 years later..." Phish had been playing background music (including McGrupp and Ghost teases) which had developed by this point into a deep funk jam. Trey announces that "we are supposed to start 'Famous Mockingbird', but the funk is too deep." The band continues the funk jam and eventually segues into "Camel Walk."

And although the frequency of attending shows has fallen off in recent years, I don't believe for one minute that after 53 shows, my love and appreciation of attending their performances has changed at all. What they can do together as a band is unlike no other musical act I've ever seen, and with each infrequent show I still get to enjoy, I'm convinced of this every time, as I was when I left that magical event at Darien Lakes so long ago.
Go down in your own way
And everyday is the right day
And as you rise above the fear lines in his frown
You look down
Hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

Nice! Seeing the Ken Kesey stuff at your first show must have been pretty wild.

Ugh, this would have been my first show too if I didn't have to sell my tickets to go to my cousin's wedding. Forgot how many good songs they played this night! On the bright side, my 17 year old self had fun riding in a limo, sneaking booz from my uncle and playing in the sand with one of the bride's maids.

I pop back in now and then. Going to be back more. BD was killer. Living in ny and feeling a little selfish at how much they play here. I have been posting a lot on the Addicted to Phish FB group. But this was such a great forum I had to come back.

I was at Jam Filled, Powdered, Maple and the Phinale.

My first show. Not a good "first show" in some ways, but accelerated me toward getting it.

Those are some tasty donuts! Obviously Jam Filled was EPIC, but I have gone back and listened to the Powdered show more than any other.

2017 and 2015 are probably the two best Phish years since 1.0.

Honorable mentions to 2003 and 2012.

Knowledge is not wisdom
Wisdom is not truth
Truth is not beauty
Beauty is not love
Love is not music
Music is the best

^ At this point I am pretty sure that I have given up any semblance of objectivity when it comes to comparing 2003 to 2015 and now, yes, 2017.

When all is said and done I will have seen more show in 2015 & 2017 than any other years. Even in the face of attendance bias, unless Dicks is otherworldly, 2003 will still get my vote.*

Yeah, I'm just not familiar enough with each year to try comparing them as though all shows in a single year were all the same. I loved 97/98/99/00 but these last three years have been wonderful.

Standing on a deserted NJ beach right now with the dog. Big storm from NC is making it way up, 40 mph winds blowing in. Listening to the BD MOMA.

Just one more workday to get through then it's off on a plane. Can't wait to meet up with many of you again. Still holding out for that Mule or Forbin's but after the Dozen, I have no idea what to expect.

Summer 2017 kicks the shit out of 2015 when it comes to ticket art. That's pretty much the only way I rate shows these days.

Thrillist called Lambsbread, who I have never heard of, the best band from Vermont. I feel like this is inaccurate. I'll tell you, Phish gets no respect.
