Don't think I've ever seen Mike smile so much at Phish shows as I did during this run. Makes me feel good not just about Phish in the present, but future-Phish as well.

It's fucking great to be alive, ladies and gentlemen, and if you do not believe it is fucking great to be alive, you better go now, because this show will bring you down so much.

Love that quote! Though sometimes I attain that grateful feeling through the course of a Phish show. Difference between Phish and Zappa I suppose.

Twenty years ago today I first saw Phish live as they took the stage at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center outside of Buffalo NY:

08-14-97 Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Darien Center, NY

Soundcheck: Buffalo Bill, The Old Home Place, Funky Bitch

1: Ya Mar, Funky Bitch, Fluffhead, Limb By Limb, Free, Cars Trucks Buses, Tela, Train Song, Billy Breathes, Run Like an Antelope

2: Chalk Dust Torture, Love Me*, Sparkle, Harry Hood, Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Merry Pranksters' Bozo Madness#-> Camel Walk, Taste

E: Bouncing Around the Room, Rocky Top

*For Elvis Week. #This segment was dominated by the stage presence of Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Colonel Forbin doesn't meet Icculus this time but rather finds "Ken Uncle Sam Bozo Kesey" (or something near that). At this time Kesey, dressed as Uncle Sam, appears on the stage and accounces that the Bozos have been missing for two years but are on Phish tour now. He calls one by one the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and Frankenstein (Phish breaks into "Frankenstein") to help him find the Bozos, which soon appear as four white things in costume. After singing about the Bozos which are doing interpretive dance, the Pranksters all leave the stage after Kesey hears the "Bozo Mockingbird". Trey comments that this is what happens "after you do too much acid 30 years later..." Phish had been playing background music (including McGrupp and Ghost teases) which had developed by this point into a deep funk jam. Trey announces that "we are supposed to start 'Famous Mockingbird', but the funk is too deep." The band continues the funk jam and eventually segues into "Camel Walk."

And although the frequency of attending shows has fallen off in recent years, I don't believe for one minute that after 53 shows, my love and appreciation of attending their performances has changed at all. What they can do together as a band is unlike no other musical act I've ever seen, and with each infrequent show I still get to enjoy, I'm convinced of this every time, as I was when I left that magical event at Darien Lakes so long ago.
Go down in your own way
And everyday is the right day
And as you rise above the fear lines in his frown
You look down
Hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

Nice! Seeing the Ken Kesey stuff at your first show must have been pretty wild.

Ugh, this would have been my first show too if I didn't have to sell my tickets to go to my cousin's wedding. Forgot how many good songs they played this night! On the bright side, my 17 year old self had fun riding in a limo, sneaking booz from my uncle and playing in the sand with one of the bride's maids.

I pop back in now and then. Going to be back more. BD was killer. Living in ny and feeling a little selfish at how much they play here. I have been posting a lot on the Addicted to Phish FB group. But this was such a great forum I had to come back.

I was at Jam Filled, Powdered, Maple and the Phinale.

My first show. Not a good "first show" in some ways, but accelerated me toward getting it.

Those are some tasty donuts! Obviously Jam Filled was EPIC, but I have gone back and listened to the Powdered show more than any other.

Look out, mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river...
