Sometimes I love hearing Esther, sometimes I hate hearing Esther. I guess you could call it a love/hate kind of thing.

Was never a fan of Esther, don't know why. I always skipped it when it came on. Then I saw/heard it live and I gave it another shot. Needless to say I will no longer skip this one.

I love Esther. Even though it's not officially a Gamehendge tune, every time I hear Page start to float into that lovely piano bed I feel like I'm drifting off this Earth and into the fields of Prussia. It gets me every time.

Great tune. The instrumental part where she's flying is particularly wonderful. I'd love to see it live.

Weren't there more lyrics with a happy ending at some point?

That's probably because on the recorded Gamehenge one of the narrations is set to part of the composed part of Esther. I don't know which one came first though.

Yeah, the live ones too feature the Esther music during narration. It makes for a neat key change when the Lizards starts, and the guitar part's picking pattern is the same (or similar).

This has to be my all around favorite song. The lyrics create such perfect imagery, that I don't think has been reached again.

His grin stretched the folds of his pasty white cheeks
And his lips hurled a dollop of murk on the curb
And the lights from the rides showed a mischievous sparkle
That flashed in his hollow eyed stare

As she drifted away to a tranquil
And motionless sleep.

And so much more.

The best, Jerry. The best!

+1.

Trey's finest lyrical moment?

I was just thinking last night about this song as I listened to a version from 1990 ... that there are so many songs they play more frequently than Esther that I like a lot less!

It is a 12x18 oval. It is waht is consodered a "pole pool". It has the 2 poles that have a bracing cable running across the center of the pool, overhead. It has a wood-grain steel? wall and has a small ladder/deck area with it. Also has security fencing that runs along the top of it, all the way around.
The only markings on it are the ones on the pump and the filter: Hayward Power-Flo pump and an Esther Williams extended cycle DE filter.
The seller indicated it was 5 years old but I am in suspicion that it is more like 10.
Any help would really be great We are running out of ideas and it is hot here in Florida
Thanks

:?: :?: This isn't a board about swimming pools, although I hear you need to watch out for the dolls that come with Esther's, they will try to drown you apparently....Hope this helps

Loving this one lately. The ending guitar sustains are so haunting. I'm curious as to how that mood is created musically.

The first solo/jam flying section, or whatever it is called, is amazing. (About 2:55. Always gotta fast forward.) It starts with the piano and then the guitar comes in and they dance and weave around eachother for a few minutes. Then I rewind and listen again and rewind and listen again and so on. "And she began to tumble earthward til she landed in the nasty part of town." And now it's in your head, right? I know. So good. And the closing solo/jam drowning section, or whatever is is called, is amazing too.

Makes me want to shake Trey's hand.

^awesome. Great post. That's like my favorite music ever. I love this kind of Phish tune.

I think Esther is similar to some of the Gamehenge writing, namely the Lizards and Col. Forbin's>FFM ... that is some of my favorite all time Phish material, those pieces. The lyrics are so rich and kickass in all of that stuff too, it's just incredible material.

The Esther lyrics, and the Col Forbin's Ascent lyrics, are often on my mind because of their awesomeness.

And yet, the music of these pieces is so grand - and majestic, that the words are easily taken for granted.

But I believe Trey was on fire writing lyrics for a stretch in the late 80s. Quality words!

Probably aided by the fact that pieces of the Esther composition are used over the interludes in the original TMWSIY
