Oops, I meant 12-15.

Still good stuff, though.

This is the only version I've ever heard that I would consider a must-have for every phan, and I am a big Free connisuere.

Thank you! I used to have that and lost it and couldn't remember the date. Probably my fave version. July 26, 1997 South Park Meadows, Austin, TX. Awesome segue into free out of a glorious hood. one of the best high energy segues ive ever heard them do. A spectacular YEM -> Izabella can be found on this show.

I was disappointed in general with Free this past tour. They played it 4 or 5 times, and every time sounded exactly the same, at least when I was seeing them live.

there's so much more they could do with that jam, and I feel like they're taking the easy way out with going straight to the "BOM BOM.....BOM BOM...BOM BOM (mike goes off) ... BOM BOM.... BOM BOM ... BOM BOM (mike goes off)" repetitive jam that we see on the Brooklyn DVD.

7/15/98 - The segue into Free from that awesome Tweezer is great. I like this one way better than the segues these days where Trey just plays that D note and the band catches on and hit the "Free drop". Not to mention the jam on this one is some sweet 98 funk. And who doesn't like that?

When played well, maybe one of my top 5 songs to hear live. They have strayed a bit from the extended phunkers of the 97-98 "Free"s, but it is still fantastic to get those Mike bombs..especially anywhere in the first about five rows! 8-)

You know I really enjoy the Clifford Ball Free. It doesn't have Mikes bombs as much but almost has this airplane sounding effect (or maybe the substances I was on at the time they were playing made me think this)...I really can't explain it but give it a listen...seemed fitting with the whole flight theme going on that weekend. If you were there or have seen the DVD it is when Trey is playing the mini drum kit he had set up on the side and he's messing with all the pedals to get that sound...I think

I love Free because of the movements it induces when played live, and, as Hank brought up on the first page, its potential jam versatility. Also because it came about when I was young and just getting into seeing Phish as much as possible. It elicited feelings in me that I had never felt and continues to represent some of the peak experiences of my life.

I would shit a brick if they combined the early version of this tune with the later version of this tune. In the early versions they would take the jam straight from the second verse theme and hang on to it as the segue into the jam, whereas in the later versions they run through the chorus one more time and into the BOM BOM (mike goes off) part...to quote Hank. At the end, the early versions would come back to the verse for one stanza and then finish with a last chorus. The newer versions don't go to the verse again, but straight back to the chorus at the end.

What they SHOULD do, is both. Start a jam from the end of the second verse and drag it out a bit, like in 95-96. Then come back to the verse again, one more chorus, then into the nasty Mike bomb session, then finish the song off with the last chorus. That would be awesome. Really awesome...I think.
