check out the 12-31-92 Foam if you want a chuckle...listen to Mike's "If it wasn't for the foam" towards the end -- he sounds so pissed off. it's great.

and overall, an excellent version, i think.

On the note of shelving songs, I honestly don't think they'll shelve many of the greats. I think some of them will be quite rare, but these songs, I'm sure, are incredibly fun to play (hence the numerous versions in the past [YEM]). I know I like playing the songs that I've written that are harder than the others because they are more fun.

I hope Phish comes back for no other reason than fun.

Love those 90-93 Foams. One of my favorites was 11/28/92. I gave that show to a friend at work to listen to about 8 years ago and he never returned the tapes. I guess he's a slow listener.

This is one of those tunes that I didn't dig at first. At all.

When I first got HCA (within my first year of Phish listening) I'd skip over Foam.

The 04/17/93 version I'm listening to is awwesome! Great tension build up and great solo by Page. Fish's drumming is outstanding and Trey's work is great!

I kind of just like the middle part of Foam. The instrumental segment, as it were. To me the song itself is probably the worst part of Junta. I guess Glenn was kind of picking it apart too up there, so maybe I'm not alone.

I like the song okay. I have nothing against it. BUT I will say that this is one of the songs that suffers the most from the lack of face-melting trey shredding in 3.0. I listen to versions from the 90's and that build from quiet jazzy guitar solo to that frenetic frenzied solo at the end is just the bees knees. I miss that shit. Without it the song does very little for me save for the piano solo.

I've heard a few 3.0 Foams and I feel like Trey's really on it. Especially at the end, that form changes key with like, every chord change, and unless I'm thinking of another song ... wait ... I am. I'm thinking of the Sample In a Jar jam. Ha! Jar jam!

I don't know what drugs you guys are failing to smoke, but Foam is quintessential. Love that song, front to back. Especially the studio version for the verse vocals! Love how Trey delivered those extended syllables, in that clear happy tone on Junta.

Nugless, do you remember being faced and watching late night TV at your dad's and Foam came on and that infomercial with that caulking gun thing came on that dispensed the liquid foamy stuff that would harden after you squeezed it out was on the TV at the same time as the song.

I do...and it was fucking awesome

Some of my favorite lines from Trey come from Foams. It's that goofy bebop strut that I love. Like when Trey is just cramming notes in there but purposeful melodic ones. Amazing how they can start so gentle and quiet and become so raging. Of course you already knew that... Here is one that I'm loving lately.

Egads man, the recording is cut short! Damn you mid-set tape flips. Trey is shredding away and just about to hit the final peak then *poof* My Friend My Friend starts up. Damn shame because this is a smoking version.

I scrolled through the thread and, besides laughing at all the early Pah days banter, came across this post for another version of Foam.

Trey doesn't dominate the lead role as much as the first one above but man the solos are killer. No Phish song gives me a chubb quite like a near flawless Foam.
