I've heard people say the Clifford Ball Harpua is kind of crap because it's unfinished. Anyone care to refute??

^ It's definately not crap, it is one of the best encores you could possibly ask for, but it is short...real short, but the finish it up the next year anyway...so it all works out.

Harpua

It's interesting because it has the potential to be the best Harpua ever, being split across two festivals like that. But the second half is played in the most lackluster set of the whole Great Went, and it's just kind of bland. Plus people were so confused and disappointed that it went unfinished; kinda skews the perspective.

Well... I think the leading contender for THE Harpua, is 12/6/96. Now who wants to proove me wrong?

I think it's just that no one here really listens to much younger phish...because that was like the only version they played in '96 so there is no way it could possibly be as tight as some crazy versions from '90-'92. Listen to 12/31/92 at least before you go and decide that the only Harpua from '96 is better than it. I don't know, maybe the '96 one is the best, but I was hoping to hear about some awesome early Harpua's...guess no one listens to those.

I actually registered to the site after reading this. The Harpua from Ian McClean's farm 8/21/87 is awesome. Starts of with Fishman lauhging his ass off during the opening Oom-pa-pa. Then it's a Harpua> Bundle of Joy (Fluff's Travels, pt. 5) > Harpua. Pretty dominating for an 80's show. Actually the show is supposed to be one of the most traded shows from the '87 era (and yes i got that from Mockingbird Foundation). Regardless this is some '87 shreddies. Also has the 1st ever BBFCfM. Check out CLOD! More great Fluff's Travels parts being played separately.

Harpua Help,

There is a version I used to have where Mike is doing an Elvis impersonation as Jimmy's dad. The lead in is that Trey says, "look, it's Elvis". This is not the famous Vegas show. This would have to be 95 or before and I'm thinking pre 93 if memory serves. Any ideas?

Interesting, that may be the first video I've seen of the Burgettstown 03 show.

Then again, I don't get out much.

Actually, if you look on YouTube hard enough, you can find bits and pieces of the show! I just found both parts of the CExP. God I love that jam.

Harpua will not show up again until everyone thinks it is dead and buried. Then, Bam-zing it'll be there!

I just counted and I have seen 9 harpuas! No wonder it's my favorite Phish song....I just love the hook so much it's crazy.....My favorite one that I saw was Halloween 95...Mike's crazy raccoon story was fantastic....My first Harpua was totally sick as well...2.12.93 It's the one with the MJ black and white riff...7.16.94 also stands out as a great one...THe most recent one was a little rough but the point of that song is just straight fun....

suprised i'm the first to mention the 7/04/10 Harpua

easily the most overtly political thing the band has ever done on stage (at least to my recollection)

i think Trey might've been chatting it up w/ thnkfrstpal before playing this one! ;)

Just listened to this and it sounded pretty good. A very good Harpua.
Fishman nailed Killing in the Name Of too.
And your right Charlie,...it has to be the most political the band has gotten.
A pretty interesting statement from Trey.
Talking about the lyrics to Guelah Papyrus (I'm totally going over them now too)
I don't think Trey has ever compared the boys to another band like that before?
"The only other band that tells it like it is".
Trey was giving Rage Against the Machine some mad props. I loved it.

Trey definitely still has it in the storytelling department. Great cover choice.
Phish is killing it this summer.

I don't feel like looking it up right now, but Fish made a pretty overtly political comment at a show in the early 90s about not eating at McDonald's while wearing condoms. I think that might beat the 4th.

So, what if we ignore all my earlier posts in this thread, and agree that Dick's Harpua took things to a whole new level?
