I think Tube is my new favorite Phish song.

I've been listening to the Tube from 11/16/1990 a lot, and I can't believe how much jamming they fit into three minutes. It's different in that there's this build to the first Page solo that sounds a lot like the choppy end of "Punch You in the Eye" ... it's not in the song anymore, so it's cool to hear. And it's pretty impressive how smoothly they fall right into the piano jam that follows.

Also, there's no guitar soloing ... you know that part that slows down and changes key where Trey rips it up? Totally absent at 11/16/1990.

Anyone got a 1991 Tube they can tell me about?

*edit*(Or any recording of it that's kind of older? I'm wondering when the guitar solo section was added in, and when that staggered intro to the piano solo was dropped.)

**editedit** the Tube argument earlier in this thread is awesome cuz, not only did the two parties misunderstand that they were on the same page to begin with, but Tube wasn't even performed at the show in question (LP03 9-14-00).

;D

10 days later, 9/28...A damn groovy but short "Tube."

And this follows a show-opening "Wolfman's" and "Sneaking Sally!" That's a hell of a way to start a party.

11-2-1998 is quickly becoming a favorite.

Ankh I had to check out that 1990 Tube on Sugermegs and it sounds so weird truncated like that. The interplay between Page and Trey is the highlight. My favorite version I saw was 11/22/91 U. of Southern Maine gym. It opens up the second set and just rages. It's on Sugermegs site it's a little bass heavy mix but worth a listen. Also the YEM from the same set has the most evil vocal jam I ever heard. The end by saying Oh God fuck off or something totally over the top.

^ Most likely, but when it debuted in I think 1990 it was regularly a 4 minute song.

Yep, wasn't really extended until 1997.

Not that Neil would know that.

Hey! I did know that. I guess what I was implying that since 97 we're accustomed to longer versions.

The longer versions were nice but the earlier stuff is just as tasty - but we are all missing that, I predicted a Ghost at Cincy (which I got), but missed on the GTBT by a night and that Tube by a night... Damn!

09 Tubes beat 2010 all day in my mind. Is it just me or was Page just complete ripping it to shreads in summer 09?

Yeah, I wish they'd chill and give this song more due. I feel like in this era, they've just decided that certain songs will be played a certain way, much like the Dead decided certain songs were "first set" or "second set" only songs (although we're not quite there yet, thank God).

Tube is one of my favorites for sure, and I do agree with '09 being superior to '10 (check out Asheville '09). I'd say this tune got it's "jam stamp" in '98, but had really good non-funk moments before that.
