Long Exploratory Jams

Postby y0n » Thu Aug 27, 2009 3:29 pm

So I've seen quite a few people mention that Phish used to be more into long exploratory jams, heard 5 song sets mentioned a few times. Something about most of 97 being like this, but I can't find any shows that would be good examples. Could anyone point me to a few shows that would fit the bill?

11/21/97 has a really good out there AC/DC bag, and it's only a 4 song set.
11/22/97 fits the bill as well with one of the longest Halley's ever. (5 song set)

Hell, most second sets in november '97 were 5 song sets.
11/16
11/17
11/19
11/23
11/28
11/29
12/3

Every fall '97 show is worth hearing.

Already posted, but the prime example of this would be the first set from McNichol's Arena in Denver.

Ghost and Tweezer are epic!

For the post-hiatus fans...

03 has a couple good jams.
Off the top of my head the 46 Days from IT.

08/12/04 - second set has some good jams. Hell, the whole show is good PH.

ABSOLUTELY. I still hold up the 11/17/97 Ghost as an example of Phish's jamming at its best. (Or rather, at my favorite.)

Ghost from IT
Wolfmans from Halloween 98

Those get REALLY out there.
we are all being pursed. some have been found, some are still running. some will keep running until they get to the end of the road, straight off the proverbial cliff. you don't have to turn back, you just have to turn around.

Simple from PSU '97. Hampton and MSG '97 bags. BOISE '99 BAG, OHHH MAN. HALLEY'S FROM SPAIN '98, Hampton '97, Creek '98, Grand Rapids '98, GW '99. Houston Wolfman's '98....... etc etc.

^ I don't know if it's my favorite, but it's probably the one I've listened to the most.

46 Days from IT is right up there, but since I don't have the sbd's for IT, I probably listen to those SPAC shows a whole lot more.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm taking a good listen to the second set from 11/14/97. Wolfman's is sound extra psychedelic, I dig.

11.02.96 Crosseyed & Painless --> Antelope is rediculous. 2001 9.29.99. Simple 11.29.98. i love the 11.23.97 Gin --> DWD -> Low Rider -> DWD. And of course 6-25-97 that whole second set is way out there. its longer than four or five songs but that and 2-17-97 are some of my favorite Phish shows.
