Sunday, 08/16/1998
Loring Commerce Center at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, ME

Set 1: Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin -> Rift, Punch You In the Eye, Lawn Boy, Ya Mar > AC/DC Bag > Frankie Says, Birds of a Feather, Guyute, Possum

Set 2: Down with Disease[1] > Piper, Ghost > Fluffhead, When the Circus Comes > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Hold Your Head Up > Sexual Healing > Hold Your Head Up, Run Like an Antelope[2]

Set 3: Sabotage -> Also Sprach Zarathustra > Wilson > The Mango Song > Character Zero > Bittersweet Motel, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Encore: Harry Hood -> Jam[3] -> Baby Elephant Walk

[1] Unfinished.
[2] Alternate lyrics referring to "Bob Weaver."
[3] Fishman on trombone.

Teases:
· Sexual Healing tease in Run Like an Antelope
· Crosseyed and Painless and Super Bad teases in Also Sprach Zarathustra

Notes: This was the second show of the Lemonwheel festival. Disease was unfinished. Fishman alluded to Terrapin (“a love song about a turtle”) after a long HYHU intro but instead led the band into Sexual Healing. Antelope included Sexual Healing teases in the intro and a reference to “Bob Weaver” instead of Marco Esquandolas in the lyrics. 2001 contained Crosseyed and Painless and Super Bad teases from Trey. WMGGW returned for its first appearance since February 26, 1997 (103 shows). A fireworks display took place behind the stage in the jam out of Hood. The jam also featured Fishman on trombone. Baby Elephant Walk was played for the first time since December 1, 1992 (514 shows).

8/11/2004.

A wild show IMO, just a unique Phish concert to my experience of them. It's shitty and awesome too, I dunno. 2.0 was strange times. Unfortunate yet lucky or somethin weird like that. This was the only 2.0 show I saw.

I've just listened twice to disc two, which is set two. I really think, if I'm not mistaken, that I generally enjoy this show. It helps when you were there. But I think they did decent work that night, and I guess that the proverbial monkey was light on the back that night.

I like how the HYHU > Terrapin > HYHU segment unfolds. It's terribly lengthy, like the longest fish segment ever you know? I don't know the stats, but they HYHU shit is eternal; especially since they end the Tweezer jam on the HYHU riff, and then start it all over again once Trey gets behind the drums.

Then there's a feedback debacle, and they finally resolve that after a vacuum jam ... then they play the song, then another vacuum jam ... then back to the song I think, and then Trey stops the proceedings to do the Fish Vote 2004 thing, before finally crashing back into wrapping up the fast HYHU/Fish takes a bow thingy.

Then it threatens to go on even longer, because Trey stops again to explain the upcoming Drums>Timber number, so the ongoing sprawl of set two just gets funny by then.

So I broke out my CDR of this show, and I'd actually gone through the trouble of finding a 3CD jewel box to put this in, and printed out the art for them. Perhaps I'm the only dude who ever bothered.

I've thrown in a few different shows recently, not the whole show in every case, but I've heard a bit of

Great Went disco set
Lemonwheel 98 day two
5/8/92 Riviera Theater (up loud in earbuds @ supermarket)
6/7/11 Mansfield right now - Instant Karma, Bowie
7/1/14 Mansfield (whole show, up loud in car)
10/26/13 Worcester (up loud in car, currently midway thru set one)
Illinois Summer 95 (that f*cked up half hour Tweezer on Live Bait vol. 10 - thing's straight dissonance for so much of it)
SPAC 2014

I'd better freakin' watch it, or I'll burn out on Phish again before I even get to my next show.

Listening to the new record a lot ... the 3.0-only set I made for the car is helpful, cuz after you've been asked to step into a freezer over and over and over again for twenty years, you need to space that question out a bit.

^ I'm glad someone else feels guilty for listening to so much Phish during tour, and with a show in the future.

Today I listened to...
July 17, 1998 - The Gorge

Set 2: 2001>Mike's Song>Weekapaug Groove, Character Zero

This is one of those times I wonder why there are not more comments about this show on the individual show discussion. I've only listened to the second set, and it's way more groove, less peaks. This is especially apparent in the Mike's and the 2001. I thought the 2001 got a little boring after a while, but it is definitely tight and it would have surely had people dancing. Finally, it's the Weekapaug Groove that made me want to comment here. This Weekapaug features Phish locked in, grooving, and pristine. If you came to this show to dance, you'd have been thaa-rilled about this set, but this Weekapaug is really the delicious cherry on top. Take it from someone who loves to listen to different versions of Weekapaug Groove, this one is a star. :o

2/28/2003 - I was driving home last night and was 16 minutes into Tweezer when I pulled up to the house, so I drove around town for 11 minutes.
Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why.

Teases:
· Woman from Tokyo, San-Ho-Zay, and Entrance of the Gladiators teases in Bathtub Gin
· Gotta Jibboo tease in Limb By Limb
Notes: Cover of the Rolling Stone made its Phish debut at this show, presumably as a nod to their actual appearance on the cover of the March 6, 2003 issue of that very magazine. Gin included Entrance of the Gladiators, Woman from Tokyo, and San-Ho-Zay teases. Limb By Limb contained a Gotta Jibboo tease. A fan jumped on-stage and grabbed Trey’s microphone during AC/DC Bag before being dragged off-stage. Caspian was unfinished.

Watching the Vegas 2000 DVD.

Not a great show by any means.

But I have watched/listened to it at some great times.

Plus, how amazing is Roggae on video.

Re: What show are you listening to right now?

Postby jawbone » Mon Mar 30, 2015 12:11 am

Past couple days have seen me diving into some Spring 1991 action. 4/6 yesterday and 4/27 today to be specific.

It is nice to be reminded of just how incredible this band was when they were raw. Not that they are any more or less amazing now. Just in different ways. Before the magic of type 2 jamming blossomed or the bigness of the whole production. Just tight playing of their early material, standing on its own.

A lot of times listening to recent Phish shows, my one complaint is that I wish they would focus this much on song performance. The Rebas and Fluffheads and so forth.....just astonishing when they nail it.
