Named Jams

Postby GolgusApparati » Tue Sep 14, 2010 6:53 am

The Providence Bowie. The Crosseyed Antelope. The Real Gin. The Fleezer. Reading through the Phish Companion, I've been spotting stuff like this. What's up with jams that get their own names? I think they're kind of cool, like invoking the name of great mythological warriors or something. I get how they're constructed--place names, song combinations--but where do these names come from? Phan usage? Do they separate the cream of the jam crop from the rest of the fine jams Phish does? Are new names surfacing? I just think this an interesting phenomenon, hopefully my thread about it is not too dorky.

Vegas Ghost (98)
The Moby Dick Show
Boise Bag
Toronto Reba (OK, that one is mine, but it could work...)

I wanted to comb through the setlists and come up with more, but I need to get ready for work. Nice thread idea, btw. The idea of Phish and their jams as mythological warriors is good stuff.

Mind Left Bowie

Jams end up getting names because they are the cream of the crop and thus are referred to very often. It's easier to remember names than exact dates.

On a side note, I just started listening to Mind left Bowie while posting and it is fantastic- definitely a go to jam for me.

EDIT: I forgot about FrankenYEM at great woods gamehendge 94

Oh, totally! New names show up all the time. LIke...

This one! Great example of a new one. If I had to throw one out there, I'd go with the Alpine Disuse? (which is probably awkward, but whatever.) Who knows how much people will actually use it though. I think the way people's memories work, we remember a lot about things that happened recently, but forget most of the more trivial stuff from the past.

glideandseek wrote:Jams end up getting names because they are the cream of the crop and thus are referred to very often. It's easier to remember names than exact dates.

I guess what I've gathered from talking about it is that the names that survive a long time are the ones that refer to some of the "best ever" jams. When it's been a long enough time and you can't remember what day the Runaway Jimphony was played, you say that name and everybody knows what you're talking about.

To tie it back to my original post, it makes me wonder if there are other, lesser-known jams that were just as famous just after they were played and easily recognized by names, but they were shoved aside in favor of other, more epic jams or ones that were part of more widely distributed show recordings, They were lost to the sands of time, only to be rediscovered later by jam "archeologists" going through their cassettes.

Heh, I think these }-segues from this year are going to be just as memorable as a lot of the better jams from this year, sadly.
