First sets outshining second sets?

Postby ghost_2000 » Tue Mar 14, 2006 11:00 pm

I was always under the impression that Phish played straightforward, minimal-jamming songs in the first set (warm ups) and then busted out the goods in the second set.

Off the top of your head, can you think of any shows where the first set REALLY outshines the second set?

sorry, i should have specified a normal 2-set show.

no 3-setters!

im sure this was probably a more common occurance in the mid-90s....right? maybe?

12/31/03 i felt was that way too, but i guess 3 setters aren't included here.

sick if you were there! i was and LOVED it...right up front in front of gordo, looking back on the sea of glowsticks, all i remember is ORANGE!

but listening to it now...no way, really sloppy jamming.

12-7-97....i think the 1st set is definately stronger, but not overwhelmingly so. i love that reba.
So it seems... that the world keeps on turnin'

First sets outshining second sets?

Postby Moma Dave » Tue Mar 14, 2006 11:49 pm

If I remember right.... 2000 had more jammy, longer first sets than set two. If not 00 maybe it was 99. I do remember thinking maybe it was time for set one to shine and simmer down on set two.
I'm left in the now with a wondrous glow
I think I'm still me but how would you know?

11-30-97

Guyute, Funky Bitch, Wolfman's Brother ->Love Me, Squirming Coil, Loving Cup

the jams in Funky Bitch and Wolfman's are incredible, with the Wolfmans just completely insane and scary, and then the segue into the beautiful Love Me is absolutely perfect. i love it.

My vote goes to 8/9/04, I did like the second set though. It was just not the balls to the walls Jam fest the first set was. It was pretty Mellow. An interesting show.

Off the top o' me head:
12/7/97 and 11/17/97.
7/10/99(!).
9/14/00.
4/5/98 (this is definitely gunna rile some feathers, but I just love the flow of the first set. I love the second set, but I'd say the best hose was in 4/3's Set II)
7/29/98
I can't really think of any earlier shows that had ass kicking first sets, aside from the Gamehendges.

actually, i dont know if "outshine" is the right word, but 7-29-03 contains a fabulous first set. the second set, other than the "Crosseyed and Painless" jam and the bustout of "Harpua" is so-so at best.

i agree with almost all of that, especially the Gamehendge. However...7/10/99....I dunno....The "Chalkdust" and "Birds" are equally impressive in my eye. The only other standout in the first set is the "Gin" and it's only about average. Then again, so is the second set "Tweezer." I think the well-performed "Fluffhead" might push the second set over the top (although the set itself is kind of short). Kind of a crummy encore, though, IMO.

First sets outshining second sets?

Postby maelzoid » Wed Mar 15, 2006 5:03 pm

I agree that in the early days, the first sets seemed to consist of solid reliable songs played well with two or three streteched out for jamming (a Stash, SOAM, Divided Sky for example) as a warm up for the second set which featured more experimental jams as well as plenty more segues. This seemed to change in about 97 whne the jamming started popping up in the first set as well.

My two candidates for this category are.

All time favourite Show: 11/17/97 Denver

Only show I attended: 8/9/04 Hampton

If this is in regard to 2/17/97, I have to disagree. Set II is simply mind blowing once DWD..Very intense playing throughout.
