April!

Van Halen has a four record live set coming out around the same time.

Yes is putting out a fourteen disc CD set of 7 complete shows from 1972.

I'm passing on Yes though, screw that.

Recorded on 24-track digital, mixed down to analog for your vinyl enjoyment.

This is disappointing, something like this should be specifically mastered for vinyl.

And I presume this will be $125++

I'm on the fence right now...it'd be different if it was a previously un-released show.

For me, it's going to come down to how well the packaging is done and if there're any extra goodies included.

I'm so distracted by this, and the VH & Yes releases. I keep talking about it, but my family tunes me out when I start rambling about rock bands and records.

Of the three, this Phish one's the no-brainer. I just can't justify it. And I was already thinking about the other two when this got announced, so it's the one that caused me to start to stress out! I've never heard this show either, strangely. Mighta listened one time, I have an AUD someplace I think.

The Yes one is the most difficult for me, for so many reasons. I might hold off on that one and hope to score the 14-CD edition of the set on sale or used or something. I'm tempted to get the triple record highlights edition, but I'm realizing more and more that it's the 14 disc box or nothin.

But shit, six LPs???! I'm thinking $129.99.

Do the kids really need to eat *every* day? I've been assuming so, but it's worth asking.

I would rather shell out the dough for ALO. I like this show but I actually enjoy listening to other shows more. Live Phish on vinyl is a dream, but I don't think I'll be getting this one.

+$150 is pretty excessive at $25/LP. The packaging would have to be stellar and include some cool inserts, notes, etc. to justify the price. This is my best guess at how it would be broken down.

Set 1:
A - Punch You In the Eye (8:46), The Sloth (3:45) >
B - Reba (14:25)
C - The Squirming Coil (10:27)
D - Maze (10:18)
E - Colonel Forbin's Ascent (5:22) > Fly Famous Mockingbird (2:13) > Shine (1:12) > Fly Famous Mockingbird (7:18)
F - Sparkle (3:46) > Chalk Dust Torture (7:50)

Set 2:
G - Drowned (12:27) -> The Lizards (10:37)
H - Axilla (Part II) (4:13) > Runaway Jim (16:05), Strange Design (3:36)
I - Hello My Baby (1:27), Mike's Song (20:31)

Set 3:
J - Auld Lang Syne (1:44) > Weekapaug Groove (17:42) > Sea and Sand (3:46)
K - You Enjoy Myself (25:37)
L - Sanity (6:08), Frankenstein (5:47); Encore: Johnny B. Goode (4:59)

Indeed.

I want it but don't know if I can justify spending that much on a show I already have.

It's gonna have to be real purty....I'll wait and see...

^^I think Maze & Coil will share side C, based on what I read about side lengths when Junta got pressed.

^The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward passing on this. $150 is freakin' nutty. Can't believe I'm saying that, but then I don't have the complete vinyl Phish collection anyway. I'm close though. Still, wow, that's a lot of cake. And twelve sides is crazy. Maybe if I'd been at the show, that'd be different.

Vinyl's making an expensive comeback.

Also, I could've sworn I remember reading David Welker saying that he knew Rift was in the works for a release this year.

Too much shit coming out that I want.

What year of VH is that live release???

I wasn't sure if they'd split Maze and Coil or Drowned and Lizards. Figured since the setlist had a > between Drowned and Lizards they might want to maintain that continuity. 6LP seems unnecessary though and they could probably do it on 4 1/2 or 5.

hosemasterflex wrote:Vinyl's making an expensive comeback.

Agreed. Even the older stuff has been marked up a ton these last few years. I had a small collection in the mid 90's consisting of stuff like Pearl Jam, Wu Tang, Zeppelin, Floyd and my crown jewel, Bob Marley Songs of Freedom 8 LP boxed set. I bought it for under $40 and eventually sold (on a fairly new website call Ebay) for some serious cash to help pay for my Big Cypress trip. Anyways, as expensive as some of these 'new' releases are it's pretty awesome to have the ability to get so many albums on fresh 180g vinyl.

^^^The VH release is 2013, Tokyo.

That's the other thing, ... just as soon as you've bought 12/31/95 6LP vinyl, they'll announce the fest, or Rift vinyl, and they've got you on the hook.

Side K: You Enjoy Myself. ‘New Year’s Eve 1995: Live At Madison Square Garden’ Deluxe 6-LP Live Vinyl Box Available For Record Store Day
On Record Store Day, Saturday, April 18, Phish will release ‘New Year’s Eve 1995: Live At Madison Square Garden’ as a deluxe 6-LP live vinyl box set. This will be the first time Phish has released a complete live show on vinyl and the special box includes new photographs from the show and an essay by Parke Putterbaugh. It will be available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country.
“The years just keep sliding by.” Trey said it best during Fly Famous Mockingbird. Phish stormed Madison Square Garden on their annual holiday tour for a night of music, myth, theater and celebration. Originally released in 2005 and widely regarded as one of Phish’s finest live performances and named one of the “Greatest Concerts of the ’90s” by RollingStone, this box includes the complete three-set show (27 tracks and more than three and a half hours of music on 12 sides of vinyl).
‘New Year’s Eve 1995: Live At Madison Square Garden’ was mixed from the multitracks by Elliot Scheiner and mastered for vinyl from the 24-bit flat masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the album transferred from vinyl.

Yeah, they're a little finicky about keeping album sides' running lengths short enough to not compromise on audio quality whatsoever.

I wonder what the running times would have been, had it been a five record set. The Mike's Groove is spread across two records, three sides!

I'm really on again, off again with this. I realized how much classic stuff is on here that's not on studio albums:

Punch You In the Eye
The Sloth
(an all-Gamehenge side one!)
Col Forbin
FFM
(another all-Gamehenge side, except for Shine  )
LIzards!
Runaway Jim
Strange Design
Mike's Song
Weekapaug
Sanity

RSD 12/31/95 6-LP Release

Postby nugfin » Fri Mar 06, 2015 7:10 pm

I don't think I'm gonna go after this...

After tax it'll be like $175....

There's really no extras included except for "some un-released photos and an essay"!?!?

I'm actually going out on a limb here but, I bet if you're patient you'll be able to pick one of these up below face online after the buzz dies down and flippers start growing impatient.

A monthly car payment for a 6 LP Box...I just can't explain that to my wife

Yeah, if you think of something let me know so I can say it to mine.

Regarding the below face thing, I have yet to see that happen with ANY Phish vinyl release. Maybe Joy. Maybe you're right though, can't be nearly as many people wanting this on vinyl as say, Nectar or Rift.

I just think the high cost is going to keep a certain group of people away. I could be completely wrong though.

I'm also a little shocked at the lack of "extras" included.

For Xmas my wife bought me the Bob Dylan complete Basement Tapes Box Set. It was $100...6 cd's with a full color 128 page bound book included as well as other stuff.

To me, it seems they just threw this thing together with the intention of making as much money as they could. The show was already mastered...that's it...done. Press the wax, make a box...off you go.

I'm pissing myself off...gotta stop.

Naw, they need to remaster it for vinyl. Also I can't imagine a six record set without a sturdy container of some kind, so there's that.

I just don't see the justification of $25 per record (or $17 per CD, in Dylan's case). I'm not really in it for bells and whistles, I just want a decent record w/ custom labels, in a nice cover or case of some kind, for a price that's more reasonable than this!

Maybe they'll have it in stock for a long time and there'll eventually be a sale, but I'm feeling the pressure to make up my mind sooner than later.

What a goofy release. Their first live album on vinyl and they choose one o' them looooongg shows.
