Phish~ Live Ones Vol. 7

Postby hosemasterflex » Mon Sep 25, 2006 3:01 pm

I've gone through the task of sorting out the Phish originals that didn't appear on any studio release and then splitting them up chronologically into 7, hopefully mostly even, discs.

I use the term "discs" loosely because I've only compiled and burned this one so far. This one covers 1998-2004. There wasn't a lot of stuff written during these years that didn't land on the studio releases.

The reason I've done all this is that I get tired of some of the more overplayed stuff, and I hate to end up skipping it. I realized that I only hear some songs on live recordings, and that usually puts them alongside songs I seem to hear constantly.

It's really an effort to maximize how I enjoy my Phish, and to avoid getting burned out on hearing, say, Tweezer for the billionth time. And let it be said, I love Tweezer, think it's one of the great ones.

Okay ~ here's what my disc 7 looks like. It ain't chronological, but it is regular-logical.

1. Bittersweet Motel (from Lemonwheel)
2. Jennifer Dances (12-05-1999?)
3. Windora Bug (9-08-2000)
4. Driver (9-14-2000)
5. Meatstick (IT)
6. Spices (7-10-2003)
7. Mozambique (9-26-99 w/horns)
8. Spread It 'Round (IT)
9. Mountains in the Mist (9-26-99)
10. Discern (IT)
11. Never (10-17-1998)

Not a bad disc. I think it does show that their enthusiasm was slowing down, but ultimately still good music.

I like that it isolates those songs. They're always sitting in sets alongside things like Lizards and YEM, so I guess it's no surprise that it's hard to appreciate some of these songs.

Anyone have thoughts on the list? Maybe there's a better version of something I could use? My IT is kind of a muddy AUD, so I can't really hear the words that well. Also, Driver comes from LP-03, so it's super clear and loud compared to the rest of 'em.

Anyway, I'd like to know what that looks like to you guys. I'll continue this with a new thread too, once I've compiled vol. 6. I'm pretty sure that's gonna be 1997 only.

Phish~ Live Ones Vol. 7

Postby hosemasterflex » Thu Sep 28, 2006 4:59 am

Okay, so I think Meatstick might end up bumped to the sixth disc, cuz it was first played in 1997.

By the same token I wonder if Bittersweet Motel ought to get moved. If both songs go to the 6th disc, then there'll be like, 14 songs on that puppy, so it might not fit on one disc ... but how to break it up, when really it's just that they wrote a lot of material in 1997? Do I make it eight volumes if it doesn't fit? Or a Volume 6 that's a double disc?

:D

Here's what else I've got to assemble before I can make that '97 non-studio disc Some of them I've never heard:

black eyed katy
bye bye foot
carini
dogs stole things
I don't care
olivia's pool
rock a william
saw it again
vultures
waking up
walfredo
(meatstick)
(bittersweet motel)

On this disc though, the seventh one (which could get an new number before this is over) other changes I've thought of are >

1. to quiet down the 'driver' recording some on my disc [... man that sucker's too loud. Or I should really get me an AUD of driver and use that instead.],

2. and after hearing IT's Meatstick enough to get my fill of how awesome the Japanese lyrics are, I've ultimately decided that I prefer to use the other one I have with just the regular lyrics. I have 9-26-99, and they simply deliver the whole song cleaner & better. And I don't wanna get sick of those Japanese lyrics.

I bet when I get down to like, volumes 4 & 5 these threads will be a little more active. I'm anxious myself to see how badly I muck up those essential collections of classics like Brother & Simple.

Just want to bump this because I'm about to do a new thread for vol. 6 ... just gotta make up my mind about a few things first. Haven't decided on Meatstick ... which version, or which time period it really belongs to. And I haven't settled on a version of Walfredo (suggestions?), and haven't finished choosing versions of saw it again, bye bye foot or dogs stole things.

Overall though, I do like vol. 7, which is getting a new driver and probably losing the meatstick.

I just started up this little collection I made several years back.

Making these "live ones" collections really appeased the obsessive in me, to get my head around their body of original work.

Might be time for Vol. 8 soon ... it's getting confusing though because I like to exclude songs that show up on solo efforts. So since 3.0 started, there hasn't been too many new songs that don't appear on albums or side projects. What do we got:

Steam
Dr. Gabel
Summer of '89
Show of Life
Amidst the Peals of Laughter
You Never Know

Am I forgetting anything? Not counting "Snow" or "Pigtail" or "Beauty of a Broken Heart", or anything that's on a solo/side release. I don't feel like "My Problem Right There" counts, that's on the Hands on a Hard Body soundtrack I imagine?

Anyway this Vol 7 shit's great work music. Especially when you're not really working.

Good point, but I expect those might show up on the next album, Fuegoer. I hesitate to assume Steam will be live-only forever more, too.
