I wish I knew how to "possess it some other way." The Phish fans are amazingly loyal in how you NEVER see official or studio releases on the torrent sites. I found one torrent with it (in flac, of all things) but it barely had anyone sharing it.

And what album am I listening to? None of them though I want to give Joy another listen.

Joy has been on permanent blast in the car.

I listened to Joy (the song) last night on my way home.

I cried.

I love all the studio stuff and quite enjoy whatever album I happen to be listening to but for some reason this Joy album, I don't know. Brings out emotions in me that none of the other albums do. That second lead break in BDTNL just absolutely gets me everytime. I start choking up and can feel tears welling up when Trey starts it............
Man! I'm getting emotional just thinking about getting emotional.

Got Rift playing right now. I listen to this album a lot at work, turns out. I can't think of anything to say about it really. What can be said about Rift? Brilliant, perfect, great album full of brilliant writing. I guess I wish it had more bite to it, production-wise, but damn is this a great piece of work.

Story of the Ghost. I know the production wasn't as methodical as Billy Breathes, SotG having been largely jams with lyrics added, but I think it can contend with Billy Breathes for best studio effort, production and all. Gun to the head, I like BB more song for song, but SotG still gets the coveted honor of being in my car.

SotG a good Fall/Winter album, at least if you live somewhere with four seasons. It's mostly mellow, darker, and ruminative.

While listening to LxL at work today, Trey's leads during the LxL jam are reminiscent of 70s Jerry, in the way that they're quick bursts of notes that sort of float over the music, instead of the usual driving forcefulness of typical Trey leads (if there is such a thing as "typical" when it comes to these guys).

Holy shit. I never saw this compilation. What is the theme? I mean, I think I see a theme, but why?

EDIT: NVM, I thought this was one of those Live Bait releases. I guess, if it's fan made, that makes more sense. Either way, that link still works, so I will definitely be dl'ing this when I get home.

Spun Round Room last night, til about 'Seven Below', until I turned that computer back over to my Batman-obsessed child.

This was the first album since Rift that I loved immediately. Those four in between I had to work toward accepting somehow - such a strong departure from the Junta>LawnB>PoN>Rift sequence. But Round Room sounded fresh, unique, inspired, and a little more Phishy to me.

Undermind I accepted relatively quickly too, but a lot more reluctantly!

Even enjoyed Friday a whole lot. I was singing along, and I was like, whoa. Well okay then.

My favorites are:

Waves
Mock Song
Seven Below
Mexican Cousin
Round Room

I have a distinct love for Slip, Stich, and Pass since it was the first Phish recording I have. I remember going to a CD store in the mall, and the guy recommended me buying that as my first CD. I listened to it non-stop and didn't really get it. It's an out of context live recording, in my opinion.

I didn't fully appreciate it until 1. I'd listened to the studio albums and some live shows and 2. I listened to the entire show it came from.

I then bought Hampton Comes Alive because I wanted a big mixture of phish songs from multiple albums. Again, really confusing, because I didn't have any context from where theses songs were coming from. And then seeing the Rock and Roll part 2, Tubthumping and Get Giggy With It on there was so confusing to me.

So, this is more about how jumping into Phish can be an insanely confusing thing to do. I think I finally got over my sea legs once I listened to A Live One the whole way through. Then, I got it.

I agree with a zest for the RR when it came out. However you left out Thunderhead which I don't think works live but may be one of the most beautifully subtle and fractally written studio pieces they've ever done. Yes fractally. ...and you'll just hope that I've moved on. . so you'll look up and find me gone... In this song i think you find the quintessence of Round Room... what the whole album was trying to say... what WOTC and Friday and Anything But Me was trying to do, to convey... Pebbles and Marbles like things on my mind. .. and its a perfect prelude to Waves. Those two Thunderhead>Waves are made for each other.

Haven't really thought on the words too much, interesting take there dude.

I have Hoist going right now, and why does one listen to Hoist? Cuz he doesn't want to get sick of Rift, that's why!

I love the Julius & DWD on Hoist so much more than how they're delivered live. Julius just never really translates well comparatively, and DWD is juuuuuust fast enough live to lose the awesome groove from the album version. Cavern live does the same thing to my brain. Split Open & Melt is another one.

Hoist is a funny animal to me. I can't tell which of their albums is the bigger departure - Hoist or Billy Breathes. They both represent abandonment of former Phish traits to me.

Totally hear what you're saying. I have a soft spot for Round room as it was the disk that got stuck in my car CD player as my wife and I sat in traffic for over 24 hours waiting to get into Coventry - it was either no music or RR

I will know every word to every song for the rest of my life. I think the lyrics on the Trey songs really reflect on where he was at that point in his life/career. One could even stretch that thought into the lyrics sorta being a cry for help. The last verse in Anything But Me always got me; almost bringing tears to my eyes:

I am just a raindrop, that accelerates without control
Losing bits and pieces in descent till I'm no longer whole
I am just another shooting star, high above that you might see
Until I have your full attention, I'll be Anything But Me
I'm not good with numbers I just count on knowing when I'm high enough

^i hear ya. I've been totally "there" with rr. That last verse there sews up the song nicely, in fact it brings into full clarity what the rest of the song was saying... like a surprise ending of sorts. I've always felt rr is their strongest album, lyrically. songs like ABM, friday, TH,, all these dreams.. don't translate live but are kinda the heart of the album... where -7 and 46 days are kinda out of place on the album but are dead ringers live. Waves and WOTC are the best of both worlds.

What do you guys make of the "until I have your full attention" thing? It reminds me of "Crowd Control"... I personally can't help but see it as a kind of call for help, but it sounds like a deflection, like he doesn't realize his own part in his troubles.

I like that the words are unique on this album, but they're really not my favorites at all.
