^

Right now I've got Europe '72 vinyl spinning, maybe my favorite Dead album. At least right now. Not a big Dead guy, but maybe when I grow up.
Image

Other record player's got Prince's Lotus Flower on it, really like this album much more than I used to. Vinyl makes it feel more Serious.
Image

I've been branching out a tiny bit, from my tiny listening circles though. My buddy introduced me to J Roddy Walston and the Business, and without really checking it out, I thought it was awesome. They didn't have any at the record store.
Image

I picked up Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Sex & Food LP, which didn't strike me as great, but probably is. It's a little weird and not immediately gratifying somehow, but my older brother recommended them. He is usually right about these things. He introduced me to Phish actually. And the Tick. And Clutch. And disc golf. The list goes on.
Image

I got my first Gogol Bordello CD also, the live from Axis Mundi disc & DVD. That didn't disappoint, fun times.
Image

I also grabbed Deep Banana Blackout's Rowdy Duty (saw them in the parking lot at Lemonwheel! Have a few live tapes from back in the day). Two disc live set, used $3.99 8-) Off to their wikipedia page, wonder what's happened to them over the years.

Listening you ask?

Experiencing more likely.

Just happen to run into themomadans at the David Byrne concert at Monmouth University last night here in central Joisey.

How was it, you may ask.

Possibly one of the best concerts I've seen in years.

Oh, you mean how was it running into Dan?

Possibly one of the best serendipitous meetings I've had in years, because the music made us both incredibly happy and we were both dancing and bopping all night long.

Do you have any samples, you may ask.

I captured some on my phone last night, but inadvertently deleted them this morning, doh! But fear not, I have a representative example of exactly what we saw...………..

Here's your ticket pack your bag
Time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far,
Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

I just saw him in early August last month (my first Byrne/Heads show, got to cross it off the bucket list). I went in knowing that it was this empty-stage thing with dancing and figured it'd mean the music would take a step back and was stunned at how good the band sounded.

Most shocking was the setlist. I Zimbra, Slippery People, Lifetime, Blind, Burnin, and GREAT CURVE. I love all these tunes and didn't think we'd get any of them.

^^^^^ I got Europe 72 in the mid 90s, but I didn't listen to it until 2006. My mind was blown. Classic songs that I'd never heard. My normal listening regimen: He's Gone, Jack Straw, China -> Rider (which I hadn't even known was a thing), Brown Eyed Women, Mr. Charlie, Tennessee Jed. The rest is great too, of course.

I’ve been listening to so much old-time fiddle music. Sometimes I dig into the library of Congress archives or a website called Slippery Hill and I listen to these old wax recordings of Appalchian folks playing fiddle. For more modern and less professorial pursuits I’ve been diving into Bruce Molsky. The guy is a rhymtic powerhouse. I’m also into the Foghorn String Band, and I’m also becoming quite fond of this classic Irish trad fiddler Kevin Burke. His album “If the Cap Fits” is just amazing music. This stuff has taken over my life.

Last week I watched a David GIlmour DVD from 2002. It is mostly Floyd tunes (albeit later Floyd) and a few randoms. It reminded me that this is a fantastic album.

^I love Division Bell and I'm still kicking myself for not seeing Gilmour the last time he was here, especially when I peaked at the setlist and saw he played High Hopes.

Speaking of, Nick Mason has this "Saucerful of Secrets" band he put together...they're only doing pre-Dark Side material which is pretty cool and Michigan is lucky enough to get a show. Can't wait to hit that one...will likely be a lot of songs I've never heard anyone doing live.
