Phoenix, AZ -- An Arizona woman accidentally glued an eye shut when she mistook super glue for her eye drops.

KSAZ-TV says Irmgard Holm of Glendale had cataract surgery a year ago. She was reaching for what she thought was one of her half-dozen eye drop medications. The burning sensation told her immediately something was seriously wrong.

Holm says the eye drops and the super glue bottles are nearly identical.

After putting super glue in her eye, Holm says she tried washing it out. But the quick-drying substance did what it was supposed to and sealed her eye shut.

Holm got to the hospital and staff cut off the hardened glue covering her eye. Once the eye was opened, doctors washed it out to prevent major damage.

#13 most dangerous is North Charleston, SC! When the nitrous wookiees get there it should climb significantly I would think. How reassuring. I knew I should have booked a hotel in a different part of town.

OK... so who keeps super glue next to medicated eye drops?

Serves her right.

It started two weeks ago with an informant's tip, developed during a state drug investigation: A couple of Philadelphia cops had become too cozy with a dealer.

Although the officers patrolled a section of North Philadelphia brimming with temptation, no one at the time suspected them of being dirty, authorities said.

But once investigators began looking into the activities of Officer Sean Alivera and his partner, Christopher Luciano, they quickly realized they had a problem.

The two appeared to be stealing drugs from couriers and giving them to a dealer to sell.

Two weeks after receiving the initial tip from the Bureau of Narcotics Investigations, a sting operation was swiftly arranged, with a young and "extremely brave" Philadelphia police officer posing as a courier.
Image

Monday evening, investigators watched as Alivera and Luciano - on duty and in full uniform - stopped the undercover officer, arrested him, and robbed him of 20 pounds of marijuana and $3,000 in cash, authorities said.

The crime was captured on video surveillance, said District Attorney Seth Williams.

Alivera, 31, and Luciano, 23, were arrested shortly after 7 p.m. Monday at the 25th District headquarters, where they were assigned. They were charged with robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy, and other crimes.

"Police corruption will not be tolerated," Williams said Tuesday at a news conference announcing the arrests. "We are committed to rooting out bad cops, and we will prosecute them for the disgraceful thugs and scum that they are."

Both defendants were being held Tuesday on $1 million bail. Court records did not indicate if either had an attorney.

Both will be fired, and no one will wear their badge numbers again, Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said.

Their scheme, as described by authorities, is nearly identical to another revealed in July, when three officers were accused of stealing heroin and selling the drugs to a dealer for $6,000.

In that case, federal authorities tracked the officers for months as they hatched their plan, with the aid of wiretaps and an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The indictment, which also charged three dealers and the wife of one officer, contained a thick narrative of events.

By contrast, the arrests of Alivera and Luciano moved so quickly from tip to sting that many details remained cloudy Tuesday.

Authorities described the officers' drug-dealing partner as an unnamed individual who was supposed to redistribute the stolen marijuana. Williams and Ramsey declined to say what happened to the pilfered marijuana, valued at $24,000.

How the officers came to be associated with the dealer also was unclear. Investigators said they were unsure if Alivera and Luciano had robbed other drug couriers or if other officers could have been involved.

Prosecutors did say that the $3,000 taken from the undercover officer was "found in the defendants' possession."

"With this effort to root out corruption, things could get worse before they get better," Ramsey said.

He said there was no connection between Alivera and Luciano and the three officers arrested in the heroin-stealing case.

One of those officers, Robert Snyder, also worked in the 25th District, but he was in a different squad and was not assigned to the street.

oh my god!

We're told that during the game of laser tag, one kid went out of his way to target Justin repeatedly (a violation of the code of honor of laser tag, if there is such a thing).

Sources say that Bieber became frustrated when the kid cornered him and wouldn't stop shooting and when Bieber told him, "That's enough" ... the kid responded, "What are you gonna do about it, faggot?"

We're told a shocked Bieber replied, "Excuse me?" Sources say the other kid responded, "You're a faggot" and then put his hand out toward Bieber and Bieber pushed it away as he left.

Contrary to several news reports, we're told Bieber never struck the other boy.

Law enforcement tells TMZ it was the boy's father who filed the complaint hours later ... and our source says the father was heard at the scene repeatedly telling people, "I'm a lawyer."

The police investigation is ongoing, but our sources say police already know the fault does not lie with Bieber.

BREAKING NEWS: End of Earth Postponed!

Postby the dooj » Wed Oct 20, 2010 8:16 pm

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/201 ... hpostponed

t's a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn't end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will - or if it has already.

TORONTO (AP) - A border official says actor Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, remain in a Canadian jail despite being granted a release from custody last week after they were arrested on outstanding warrants in California.

The Quaids were arrested last Thursday in Vancouver, British Columbia, on U.S. warrants related to vandalism charges. They were ordered released from custody the next day on $9,750 bail.

Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman Shakila Manzoor told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Quaids remain in detention but could not disclose further details.

The Quaids are wanted in Santa Barbara, California, where they missed a court hearing last Monday on felony vandalism charges.

Doctor: It's a Miracle Boy Survived 20-Story Fall From Window

Published October 26, 2010
Associated Press

BEIJING, China – A 10-year-old Chinese boy has survived falling 20 stories from an apartment window and landing on a parked car.

A doctor at the People's Hospital of Guizhou in southern China says the boy suffered skull fractures and bleeding on the brain and remains under close observation.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency says the boy fell from the open apartment window Monday morning and his fall shattered the car's back window.

The doctor surnamed Han in the neurosurgery department says it is a miracle the boy survived. The Xinhua report cites police as saying the fall is assumed to be accidental.

Last month, a New York man survived after falling 39 stories and crashing through a car's back window.

Sure would like to know the quality of their lives after these falls. May have been better not to survive.

Dormant ancient chimp virus revived
October 26, 2010 by Lin Edwards

(PhysOrg.com) -- Researchers in New York have identified the receptor of an ancient chimpanzee retrovirus that has been dormant for at least a million years. Now the scientists have resurrected a key part of the virus to determine how it infected cells.

Endogenous viruses, which are ancient viruses now engulfed into the host's genome, are usually studied on the basis of their DNA sequence, but the new research has essentially brought the ancient chimp virus, CERV2, back to life to enable it to be studied in the same way as ordinary viruses. CERV2, or chimpanzee endogenous retrovirus 2, is in the genome of chimpanzees and other Old World primates but is absent from the human genome. This suggests the virus was active after the chimpanzee and human lines diverged about 5 or 6 million years ago.

Virologist Paul Bieniasz, head of the Rockefeller University Laboratory of Retrovirology led the team, which aimed to try to understand how host defenses have evolved, because mimicking these defense mechanisms could help in the fight against modern viruses. They had previously discovered two proteins in humans that ward off retroviruses within cells, but these proteins do not explain why chimpanzee ancestors were infected but not human ancestors because one protein is similar in humans and chimps, while the other is ineffective against the CERV2 chimp virus.

The team proposed the mechanism that protected ancient humans from the virus lay in preventing the virus from entering the cell rather than fighting off after it had entered. In experiments with mice, and hamsters with parts of the human genome in their DNA, they were able to identify a protein, CTR1, as the receptor for the virus. The protein is normally involved in the transportation of copper into and out of cells.

The results of the research are published in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Bieniasz said that their findings are not the only explanation for why the ancestors of chimpanzee were infected but ancestors of humans were not. Behavior such as biting each other could have played a part in virus transmission, and the groups could also have been isolated from each other so the human ancestors were not exposed to the virus.

Bieniasz's earlier work involved another ancient retrovirus HERV-K, which was brought back to life and found to be capable of infecting human cells, but the cells had two antiviral proteins to ward off the virus.

(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

"It's spectacular… It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".

Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.

A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.

On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.

Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.

When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.

"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine … to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.

Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.

Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.

^^yes indeed. This is what the "bullshit" language looks like.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says that an airplane and not a missile launch was the likely cause of a large vapor trail in the skies off Southern California's coast.

A CBS affiliate on Monday videotaped the vapor trail that many viewers thought resembled the cloudy track of a missile in flight. But military officials said they did not know of any rockets being launched in the area.

Defense Department spokesman Col. Dave Lapan says that officials are satisfied the phenomenon was an airplane vapor trail distorted by camera angle, winds and other environmental factors.

He says military experts studied the video and talked to all the government agencies that might have been involved in a missile launch and none reported having launched one.
