I liked Still Alice, although one has to be in teh proper mind set to see it due to the heavy subject matter.

I saw San Adreas over the weekend. It was a veritable stinkburger!

Age of Ultron was not that good. Too many characters, weak story. Lots of style, not enough substance.
Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why.

^ yeah :(

I'm subbing for Civics and the teacher left this movie called Dave starring Kevin Kline. It's about this guy who gets a job as the presidents double but ends up being president for a while and shakes things up. Actually decently funny.

^Dave used to be shown on TV all the time. Not a bad movie at all, really.

^^Concur. Kevin Kline's one of my favorites, and Sigourney Weaver's no slouch either.

Drew, if you liked Kline in Dave, then you'll love him in A Fish Called Wanda.

Back to The Imitation Game for a moment. Read a review of the movie by someone who has read numerous biographies about Alan Turing, and he blasts the movie for its inaccuracies, especially portraying Turning as a cross between Sheldon Cooper and Mr. Spock, which he was not.

After reading that review, I ordered one of his recommended biographies on the man. Will pick it up after I finish Clapton's autobiography.

Good can mean many things, and in this case, it is entertainingly good.

Watched Gone Girl last night. Kind of predictable.

Marie suggests the book is miles and miles better. What else is new?

Went to see Love and Mercy this past weekend.

Image

Both Cusack and Dano were excellent in their parts playing Brian Wilson at different stages in his rather chaotically screwed up life. There was so much to attempt to capture in the life of Wilson and the Beach Boys that this movie could have fallen trap to dilution of the script, but it did not. It focused on an intensely tortured individual who found direction and control through the music.

The acting and script produced a sympathy and sadness for a pretty tortured and gentle soul who through the years managed to create some amazing sounds. Sure there were holes in the story, and some heavy swipes at Mike Love, Dr. Landy and the Murry Wilson, but overall it held together well.

We also saw it in a theater with surround sound and the audio images of the sounds supposedly going on inside Wilson's head was a nice touch. Almost sounded like a Pink Floyd concert, but it helped to grasp the possibility of what the guy was dealing with at times. In most early clips of the real Brian Wilson, his facial twitches and expressions always indicated there was something odd going on inside. Cusack captured those twitches very nicely.

I'd give it a 7 to 7.5 out of 10. Depending on your interest in the Beach Boys music, that could swing a good point or more higher and lower.

Went to the drive in a few days ago, we saw Inside Out & Ant Man.

At the time, I felt like I tolerated Inside Out, and that Ant Man was pretty much alright.

Two days go by and I realize I'm *still* thinking of Inside Out, and that I now think it's brilliant. Really imaginative and spirited movie, and inspiring too. Ant Man improves as I review that one in my head too. Several of the jokes fell flat to me in Ant Man and that stood out, but otherwise a fun and engaging film.

Kind of a kiddie pairing of flicks, Inside Out is kinda little-girlie, and Ant Man, is like, ... well that says little boy right in the title, doesn't it.

^Took several gdaughters to see Inside Out this past Saturday, and enjoyed it because of the animation. Pixar is a great organization. Did have some disagreement with the premise. Basically implied that emotions are control human behavior, and I'm not sure that this was something you wanted to indicate to its target audience. Although I did like the recognition that sadness is an essential part of human emotions and should not be denied or avoided. I gave it about a 7.5-8.0 mostly because it was entertaining.

Going to see Ant Man shortly with my gson.

I thought it was suggesting it's the memories more than the emotions, that shape our personalities. But I agree, it would have been cool if the little girl, at some point in the film, manually switched which emotion was at the helm, to demonstrate that we can control our emotions if we choose to.

Interested to hear your take on Ant Man.

I thought Inside Out was good. In the average to above average range of Pixar. Very clever take on all the inner workings of the brain. Nicely animated, funny, sad, and poignant. It left me with a sense of longing for my younger self and those memories that ended up in the dump.

I went to see The Gift last night. I don't usually see any old movie like that one, but I was conned, and further conned myself, into thinking it was going to be a really good suspense thriller. It was not. It was boring and exceptionally unsuspenseful. Very weak.

^ That's good to know so I will definitely skip.

The film I'm itching to watch is the new Mission Impossible. With all the Phishin' goings on the next few weeks, it may be a bit tough to get around to it though.

Marie, Elizabeth and her two daughters went on a mini tour yesterday to Albany to see a girl group called 5th Harmony. A major excursion for Marie who typically won't travel those distances without me. But they had a thoroughly great time.

While they were gone, since Jaime was alone in his house, I left work early yesterday and picked him up for dinner and a movie. He wanted to see Straight Outta Compton, and I was fine wit dat. I'm glad I was because it was a pretty decent flick. Although I wasn't a big fan of NWA, I remember all the headlines they were grabbing, and for what it's worth, this movie allowed me to appreciate what they were doing in retrospect.

Story was crisp, acting spot on and the over two hour movie moved along briskly. You just have to like to hear the word 'fuck' repeated innumerable times over the course of the movie. Have actually been a fan of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre for a while, and the movie allowed some insight into their evolution to the point when I began appreciating them.

Give it a solid 8.5/10. Interesting that Paul Giamatti got to play the antagonist in both this movie and the Brian Wilson biography.

Interesting that Paul Giamatti got to play the antagonist in both this movie and the Brian Wilson biography.

Similar character but two different approaches. He was also in that stinkburger flick with the Rock, San Andreas, where he played a seismologist trying to make a breakthrough in earthquake prediction technology.

Paul Giamatti, summer movie MVP!!!

I saw End of the Tour over the weekend and liked it a lot. A few weeks ago, I picked up Infinite Jest. It came out when I was in grad school and didn't have enough time to read it then. So far, I'd recommend the book too.

That poor woman. They're awful.

But they had a thoroughly great time.

I'll assume alcohol was heavily involved.

Hey, gotta pay the bills somehow. One can't be doing small-time artsy stuff every time.
