the radio recently told me that the actor in the movie might have some problem, i dunno... fwiw you don't even see or hear him for 95% of the movie...

A Ghost Story was the most thought provoking movie i've seen in a long time. and considering Phish/universe-is-a-donut...

The Florida Project was one of the most visual and real i've seen in a long time. only one pro actor in it and its Willem fuckin DaFoe crushing

if anyone's in the mood for a disturbingly trippy, kinda different (spoiler: foreign) horror flick, check out RAW. its messed up tho lol

Of the other nine... the ranking goes:

Dunkirk
The Shape of Water
Lady Bird
Get Out
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Post
Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour

The top-two is a tough one for me. Really could go either way. Looking for realism, or fantasy.

Michael Shannon has become my favorite actor of the decade.

I've been on a mad dash to see the best picture nominees. I'm seeing Lady Bird tonight. After that I will still have to see Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, and Call Me By Your Name.

So far my ranking goes:

Phantom Thread
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Get Out
The Post

I really loved those top four, and I'm looking forward to catching the rest.

Oldman will win for the Darkest Hour.... but the movie itself is not incredibly interesting. There is a scene in the third act that completely took me out of the entire thing.

^ I'm seeing that this weekend. I'll see if I can guess which scene it was.

I live within 20 minutes of 5 movie theatres, and none of them are playing Call Me By Your Name. Hopefully I can find it streaming with Kodi.

Updated Ranking:

Phantom Thread
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Lady Bird
Dunkirk
Get Out
The Post

I hate comparing Phantom Thread, Lady Bird, and Three Billboards to Get Out and Dunkirk.

Feels identical to Moonlight last year. Was a coming-of-age story about some gay guys and it was barely in any theaters. I think it got a little extra run after it won the Oscar but probably not much.

saw American Made this weekend. Wasn't as good as Blow, but was entertaining and I thought Tom Cruise was good in this. I don't think I have liked a Tom Cruise movie or even him for that matter since the 90's save for Collateral and maybe a mission Impossible or two.

I'm right there with you, he kind of fell off for me when his public persona became that of a completely insane person. I didn't like Minority Report or the Mission Impossible movies so that didn't help. I did however, love Edge of Tomorrow from a few years back.

On a flight last week I watched Lost City of Z. It was good but not great IMO.

Dunkirk
The Shape of Water
Lady Bird
Get Out
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Call Me By Your Name
Phantom Thread
The Post
Darkest Hour

My final (I think) top-10.

Phantom Thread was really good, but one character choice for Mr Woodcock just confused the fuck out of me. I guess I kind of get it, but it seems so foreign to me, it doesn't make sense.

I also moved Call Me By Your Name up above The Post.

I, Tonya is a very entertaining movie. I thought they might have made the characters overly ridiculous... then they showed the interviews with the actual people. Dear lord, what a bunch of clowns. If you only watch one figure skating biopic this year, make it I, Tonya.

Yeah, I watched the 30 for 30 on the Kerrigan/Harding thing and, you're right...everyone involved was either a buffoon or a piece of work in denial.
