well actually betty responds... but its pretty exciting anyway. i've posted betty's email and the 'oh kee pa' response below. if i receive anything further i will post it asap. zoot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi guys,

So, it looks as though it's time to start talking logistics! We're going
to start
throwing dates out there. What about Monday, April 10th in the evening? Mike
has also asked to pass along that he hasn't played chess in quite some time,
and while he's up for the challenge, he probably sucks right now!

I hope this letter finds you guys well.
Please get back to me and we'll start to work out the details.

best,
Betty Frost
(for Mike)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi betty!

thanks for responding. we've done some organizing on our end and worked out the logistics for a "paced" match, so that mike could make moves at his leisure, and it wouldn't interupt any recording/touring he has going on. it would also enable us to get the whole community involved in the match, rather than a select few that might play a "real time" game. here's a letter for mike that we put together to explain the breakdown. let me know what you guys think.

thanks!
zack

hey mike!

hope all is well. everyone at the oh kee pa is really excited about the chess match. over the past couple months we've had a tournament to discover the talent on the board, and prep ourselves for the big showdown. we'll be using a series of polls to direct our moves, so that the whole community can be involved in the game. we've worked through all the logistics, and it should be pretty easy from your end.

here's the breakdown:

- we would like to challenge you to two matches (one as white; one as black)
- the games will take place at gameknot.com
- the time limit for each move will be seven days
*(the time limit can be set anywhere from 3 - 14 days... if you need it to be set at a longer pace just let us know)*
- within that span you may move as frequently as you like; 'oh kee pa' moves will take approximately 3 - 5 days (to account for voting)
- should something come up, the site will let you postpone the game for up two weeks

your next steps:

- set up an account on gameknot.com
- send an email to this address with your screen name, and let us know you are ready to go.

as soon as you are set up, we will send a challenge to your gameknot account. if you have any problems just drop us an email and we'll work it out. to avoid a massive influx of messages to your accounts we're going to keep your (email and gameknot) screen-names hidden from the images that are posted to the message board.

alright, good luck! you're gonna need it, cause the okp is going to bring the heat!

much love,
teh oh kee pa family

btw... everyone raved about the holiday run with duo, and we can't wait for some ramble dove!

So what happens if he only has like one night to play the match? It sounds like that from the email.

Just wondering.

i think he just assumed it would be a real time game... our plan will work as long as he can access a computer once every week or two. (he could even call in moves to betty if need be.) i tried to emphisize that we want to involve the whole community and i think he'll take to that idea.

btw, she sent back a quick email saying "thanks" and that she'd be in touch.

well... bad news guys. here's the latest email.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Zack,

Unfortunately, Mike only has time for one game, and it would have to be
in real time, not extended over a long period of time. We're thinking
about an hour on Monday the 17th. Your best bet would probably be to
pick one Oh Kee Pah member to actually make the moves (say on Yahoo!
games or something) with other members on a conference call with that
person to tell them which moves to make, etc. We can't extend this over
several days. Let me know!

Best,
Betty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
so lets have everyone throw out their ideas on what to do next. after some discussion, i'll compile the ideas with the most support, and set up a poll. i told betty we'd discuss the idea, and get back to her in a day or two.

i'm pretty bummed by this development... but let's let out a quick "fuck!" and then try to come up with some constructive ideas so we can get back to her fairly quickly. zoot

^ FUCK!

ok, that's definitely a bummer man...for one thing, us international folk (including the man who...the great and knowledgeable man, the man who made this board [he is a great man] he's the guy who took the time to create this place we call the oh kee pa lounge, his name, the name of the guy who made the greatest phish board in the history of the internet...that man's name is...is...Cletus Awreetus Awrightus!!!!...

[music]created - by - the great - and know - ledge - a - ble - Aw - wright - us...[/music])

jeez, sorry bout that...but seriously, that would suck if Clete, Icc, Zoid, Kaktus, myself etc could not participate because it was handled with conference calls over the course of just one hour eastern standard time....

I guess I'm not really helping here. I'll continue ruminating about what we can do and promise to post any worthwhile ideas later today.

this will take some serious thinking outside the box

disappointing, certainly....

BUT Mike, being incredibly famous (albeit a low-key kind of famous) probably has a hectic schedule. the fact that we're getting him to even sit down for 1 hour on a monday night to play us is incredible.

yes. let's use the chat room...although this could all be an elaborate plot to force us to make our moves in an openly public fashion so that Mr. Gordon can dominate us in the match...is he (or Betty) that devious? I wish I knew for sure...

Hopefully that will be enough for us all to contribute, but it will almost certainly be a friggin madhouse in there if we do it that way...and we will still probably need some way of finalizing moves in a quick and efficient fashion...

could we feasibly creat polls on here fast enough and get responses for each move? If not, there are other online polling websites that may be faster (such as www.easy-poll.com etc.)

Either that, or we just kind of let Zoot play on his own and use his discretion as to whether he wants some input from the rest of us (or just a select few chess-heads?). I mean, obviously we all want to take part in this thing, but if it comes down to it, it may not be possible.

Another idea would be to scrap everything and wait until he goes on tour next and do it the old fashined way (assuming it's a long enough tour)...maybe we could do that in addition!...nevermind that's another discussion...

I think the best way to handle this would be to allow zoot and a small group of finalists/chess masters to control the moves (with zoot making the final call, breaking ties etc.), but also have the rest of us discussing the match in the chat room. The rest of us could designate one person to liase between the masses within the chat and the playas (zoot & chess-heads). Perhaps this could be Icculus as he was the alternate? Anyway, this liason (liaser?) would only contact the playaz in the event that the chat room feels they are seeing something the playas may not be seeing. The playas could even keep the liason informed with their strategy and plans of attack/defense etc. ahead of time so that we may openly discuss them in the forum, and so we have an idea of what they're thinking before moves are actually played.

Of course we'd all get to watch the progress of the match publicly.

OK, I hope this is helpful. I need to get back to work now!

yeah, the chatroom might be hectic but it would be fun. we would just have to stop casual conversations when zoot is asking for advice.

Isn't there some way once you are in there to make a "sub-chat" of some sorts?

Zoot and the other decision-makers could go in there, while they discuss, and then they come back in to discuss the choices with us.
