OK folks. This is an announcement. Hold onto your pants, and if you happen to have a hat, hold onto that too.

After many happy years here at ProBoards, I feel that we have finally outgrown our surroundings and are limited in one way or another by things like modding, admin and customization features.

I've had a long think about this, considering just staying here at ProBoards and putting up with these limitations and using workarounds to take our board into the future but I've decided that it would be best to move to a new board, namely phpBB.

What does this mean for us?
Hopefully, nothing, other than you will get to use a more reliable, fully featured, moddable message board with no problems whatsoever. In an ideal world, the change should be relatively straight-forward.

Will our topics, usernames etc remain intact?
ProBoards obviously don't want to lose communities so they don't make it very easy if one wants to migrate. This means we don't have direct access to a database of all our information. A clever chap out there has, however, written a script that can apparently transfer all of this information across to a new phpBB. I am going to attempt to use it so we can just move on like nothing has happened. Fingers crossed.

What if that doesn't work?
If it doesn't work. I am all for locking topics here and starting a fresh at phpBB. Believe me, I don't want to have to do that. I really don't. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

When is this going to happen?
I am going to begin trying to get the information out of the board this morning. I intend to do this by using classic interrogation techniques, truth serum, two handkerchiefs, a banana and the aforementioned script that I found.

I will keep you updated through this thread!

Will, your efforts will not be lost. I just need to get my head around all of this and we should be in business. Sorry to spring it on you like this.

If you guys need help with anything...ask someone else.

No seriously though, I'm here if you guys need help re-creating threads or anything. I work in a computer lab, so what else would I do anyway?

I thought you already handed over all the mod capabilities. Why do we now need to do the new board? that was only an option during the year-long stints when Cletus was nowhere to be found, and we didnt' know if he was dead, lost at sea, brainwashed, etc.

Nice... well, I'm looking forward to seeing what the new software has to offer. Maybe the new board will allow the mods to merge threads! :D

Is this something ProBoards is doing, and not Ian himself?

^ Well, If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit.

I'm a bit scared yes, but change is good.
I know I'm jumping the gun, but do you need $ for upkeep on this new site or for new software?

Let us (me) know if I can help, donate, etc.

I found these sites that use phpBB if you were wondering what it might look like.

It looks identical to proboards, IMO.

And one thing that would be nice is if the new site doesn't start deleting pages from long threads. That is weak sauce.

Had to make sure my computer wasn't going to blow up if I opened that email.

How will it be handled if any members DNA's get scrambled in the move and someone ends up with a nose on their shoulder? Has this been properly configured?

I concur. Another board that participate in recently got bogged down by it's own archive and became impossible to use due to slow speeds. They HAD to make a new board...and it's a PhpBB board.
While change is good, what exactly are we trying to change here?
What is wrong with this site at the present time????

In my opinion, this board is just getting better and better, especially with the hard work which resulted in the Individual Show Discussion boards!!! This board is NOT slow, and while losing a few pages in an archive is not a good thing, it has only happened once, right?

I guess I am just confused as to why this is even occuring when this board is operating fine.

I think that's the reason right there.

Why did they tear it down?
