Yeah, I’ve heard that alot in regards to this show too. But that term is always relative. I think alot of people got a bit carried away in rating this show shortly after the tour was over. I heard alot of ā€œBest eversā€ being thrown around in regards to the Tweezer, Bowie and the show as a whole. I was at this show , and while I absolutely loved it and still do would agree that folks might have gotten a bit carried away in putting it in its proper place.

Anyway, its seven years to the date. I’ve listened to this one quite a few times over the last few days, and the music that emerged from this evening is clear evidence that the band could hit on all cylinders when they wanted to during this time period. Focused , locked in and attentive to one another in the second set of this night the band left the stage after offering the absolute gem that is
Tweezer->Soul Shakedown->Bowie. All four members, leading and following all at the same time.

If the band can find a way to more consistently incorporate some of the improvisational magic they found on nights like this with their tight execution of 2009 then we’re all really in for it in 2010!!!

This show, among others, allowed me never to lose faith in the band’s return. What you said about the way they played the beginning of the second set convinced me that it was impossible to stay away from their own ability to connect like that. As serious musicians, they HAD to know what they could do together.

How could you, they, anyone, turn away and say never again?

Don’t forget the nice Gin from this show. Possibly my favorite of the 3 on that tour…

It’s easy sometimes when you just coast along
But like it or not something always seems to go wrong
Sometimes people build you up just so they can knock you down
Sometimes they will have you there 'cause they need someone around
Perhaps you’ll receive invitations for tea
Perhaps you’ll laugh and make them all smile
Or maybe you’ll join them 'cause it had to be
Perhaps you’ll forget you forgot for awhile
Birds of a feather are flocking outside
Like whippets they dance in a curly-queue dance
Of pulses and ringing and campfire chants
Of ritual drumming although at first glance
You thought you could run but you won’t take a chance
It’s not an experience if they can’t bring someone along
They hang on emotions they bottle inside
They peck at the ground
And strut out of stride

Highway bill’s on the rotary still and he can’t even feel the pain
of a sun dried shoulder and a scar from a boulder that cut him right across his vein
now he’s suckin’ cigar and he’s shovelin’ tar
E crater of a turnpike terrain he’s got only one hope,
and he wants to elope, ā€˜cuz highway jill is driving him insane.
We gotta get on the road, destiny unbound
she’s the one for me we gotta get outta town
we gotta get on the road, destiny unbound
she’s the one for me we gotta get outta town
highway jill was a daffodil with a cactus sense of pride
at the wheel of a tractor, she was quite an impactor
when the road rocks started to slide she saw bill drop his shovel
on a pile of gravel as he climbed up out of his ditch
she was wonderstruck when he climbed in her truck
he said "i’ve been havin’ this everlasting itch
At first she was cold, she was ready to scold this guy
from the pit with a thing in his head but then she thought twice
when he melted her ice with his passionate eyes she was energized!
she started the ignition and without permission the two of 'em flew
down the dusty road but the road wasn’t finished and the pavement diminished
they soared off the edge and they plunged in the sludge
She said: there isn’t even any road, our destiny was bound
we were the ones for us but now we’re in the ground

Rhine wine, Car horn
Now that you’ve deceived me, and played my name around
And hung those nasty flyers, on all the buildings in town
Dribbled my possessions in a ring around the earth
And bought and sold my self-control for less than it was worth
Now I know the reason that I’m feeling so forlorn
I’ll pick you up at eight as usual, listen for my horn
Rhine wine, Car Horn

Brett is in the bathtub making soup for the ambassadors
And I am in the hallway singing to the troubadours
The kings are all lined up outside the gate
And the autumn bells are ringing but they’ll just have to wait
Where is the joker? Have you seen him around
With his three coned cap that he wears like a clown?
Have you seen his stripped stockings and heard his sad tale
About the kids under the carpet and the purple humpbacked whales?
Here come the ambassadors, they show up one by one
Brett is tasting all the soup to see if it is done
Wendy’s on the windowsill waiting to be let in
And we’re all in the bathtub now making bathtub gin
The kings storm the hallway they’ve climbed up through the gate
they didn’t mean to be impolite but they just couldn’t wait
Here comes the joker with his silly grin
He carries a martini made of bathtub gin
Here comes the joker we all must laugh
Cause we’re all in this together,
and we love to take a bath.

First four songs from this show. Does anyone see something that ties these together? Obviously I think I do, but it may just be an illusion.

Giving this show a much needed relisten today. Sick. Totally sick.

And that’s only after listening to the first set. :o

I first heard this show when I first discovered downloading shows… I think it was from momadance.com, anyone remember that SLOW ASS site? Some good stuff grabbed from it though.

(I miss gdlive.com a ton too)

I think this show is great. I don’t think I’d seriously put it in the top 10 of shows they’ve ever played, but it’s really really good. The whole 2nd set is amazing and the Gin from the first set is great too.

I thought the Gin was good, but nothing outstanding. However, the GBOTT, was some serious country rocking with the band firing on all four burners. This performance is mostly overshadowed by the beginning of Set 2, but it definitely shouldn’t be. There are some pretty hot highlights to this show, no matter how you rate it overall.

I’ve heard a lot about the music played at this show. Haven’t listened to much 2003, save for 12/30 and 7/27. I probably won’t check this one out for a while but I noticed what you said about the lyrics earlier. Seems like Trey might have been feeling cynical that night. Are we seeing the same illusion?

I think you would be likely to regret that once you actually listen to this show. Great stuff. I’m really confused with the lyric thing, though. :eh:

I wrote a lengthy 6 paragraph response about the lyrics and lost it when I submitted it for some reason. Pissed me off because it was hard to word it so it made sense.

Basically something about each song has a direct message to the fanbase, and even though, as Drew points out, it sounds cynical, that’s not necessarily an unhealthy attitude from any artist. But binding two songs that have some sense of contempt for the audience around the first Destiny Unbound in years, has to be intentional.

Doesn’t it seem to indicate a recognition of the years of requests to play the song from the fanbase, yes, in a cynical almost contemptuous way. But that type of contempt for the audience is important to maintain for any artist. An artist cannot allow the audience to dictate the art, and so he naturally develops some level of resistance to that pressure in order to give them what they really loved in the first place.

So in some sense, the placement of these songs said, here’s the Destiny Unbound you’ve all wanted for so long, and here’s the reason we didn’t play it, ie, to remain true to the art, to the music. That shared loved of the music as the key was reiterated by the Bathtub Gin, where the words replace the contempt with community, with love.

HOOD!

Have to admit, I think I’m finally out of my addiction to this show, more specifically, the start of the second set. Not only is it not my giveaway disk at the moment, I have not heard that Tweezer in almost nine months.

That’s a serious breakthrough for me.

I’m not sure how much having the livephish sbds helped but this has always been one of the easiest and most enjoyable shows to listen to. That first set has excellent flow and balance.

From livephish comments:
"I don’t want to go song by song here, though it’s tempting. I’ll start by saying that I wasn’t at the show, but in my extensive listening experience with this band,THIS IS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE SHOW, top to bottom, and there isn’t a close second. If you are one of those people that judges a show by the setlist, then you’ll disagree, but I don’t do that.
I’ll try and express my feelings about this gem with the following explanation. In my opinion, the whole approach to jam music that Phish takes is summed up by the Grateful Dead’s explanation of it during their 1980 recordings for Reckoning in New York, that is, the attempt every night to transcend into a dimension of consciousness that all can share simutaneously, but can’t explain. When the lyrics, playing and vibe all coalesce to form a greater whole. Like the Dead song says: ā€˜the music played the band’.
On this night, as you listen with open, sensitive ears, you’ll hear this take place. Often, Phish will try REALLY hard to get there through many choppy attempts, but fail. However, because their music and musicianship is so outstanding, the failure is still gold to the ears. But when they HIT IT, then the songs themselves are merely constructs carrying the deeper sound to it’s next destination, and the music enters the realm of being almost beyond criticism. It’s art for eternity. This show flows like none I’ve ever heard. After the marrow-dissolving Bathtub Gin, they follow with Sleep. I actually burst into tears the first time I listened. I knew EXACTLY what Trey was talking about, and also knew that anyone with a heart of gold heard it too.
If you doubt anything I’m saying check it out for yourself. "

I’m agreeing with this^… I wasn’t at this show either. If there was only one show in my entire phish catalog this is it.

thats because it was BLAZING TITS IN ALL DIRECTIONS FILLING THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE WITH BOUNCY NIPPLES.

artistic rendering of said btg:

Sleep after that gin is truely perfect… Beyond epic show

Hahahaha yes. I have since listened to and loved this show. The Tweezer > SSP is awesome but I’m crazy about this Bowie! They destroyed this one. It’s like they were fighting a dragon and it got kind of crazy for a moment but then they came back and just kicked its ass. Then they kicked the shit out of it while it was down.
