Friday, 03/20/1992 Broome County Forum, Binghamton, NY

Set 1: Wilson, Reba, Brother, Glide, Rift, Fluffhead, Maze, The Lizards, Mound, Run Like an Antelope[1]

Set 2: Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove[2], Sanity, The Sloth, The Mango Song, Cavern, Uncle Pen, Harry Hood, Cold as Ice > Terrapin[3] > Cold as Ice, Possum > Secret Language Instructions > Possum

Encore: Lawn Boy, Fire

[1] Fishman on trombone and Simpsons signal.
[2] Oom Pa Pa and Random Note signals.
[3] Fishman on Bag-Vac.

Notes: Fishman was on trombone for parts of Antelope (which also included a Simpsons signal). Trey teased Roundabout before Mike’s Song and uttered the line, “Help me…I’m melting and I can’t solidify!” Weekapaug contained Oom Pa Pa and Random Note signals. Fish used the Bag-Vac during Terrapin.

I am listening to this show for maybe the third time, and it just hit me how much I like this one. I don’t have a lot of '92 in my collection, but darn it if this isn’t one of my favorite Mike’s Grooves that I have heard to date. The 'Paug is unique, from the opening bass riff all the way through. LOVE IT. The Mound is one of the other highlights of the show for me, always one of my favorite rarities, but Mike just sounds great in this version. Fluffhead, Reba and the rest of set one are also all so nice on the ears.

Was this one of the first times that Maze was played? I’m not up to date on my Phishtory, but I believe Trey is referring to it as a new tune.

Highlights

Brother - Intense Trey soloing.

Fluffhead - One of the most energetic Fluffhead’s I’ve listened to. Tight, fun, and bursting with energy.

Antelope - Fish plays trombone during the reggae section. The jam is hot too.

Weekapaug - Mike uses a heavy sounding effect when he’s slapping. It creates a crunchy feedback, and he patiently brings in his normal tone while phasing out whatever effect he’s using. Mike also leads the boys through some stopping and starting before they kick into Weekapaug proper. Fiery Trey soloing with great Trey/Page interplay, oh! (Listen to it) And woah, there’s a measure where they break into a riff all at the same time, without missing a beat. The single-minded jamming in this Weekapaug is incredible.

Sanity - Trey sings a list of nicknames for Mike, then starts saying things like “Clamato” and “laundry” and “rrrroooooots!” Laughing and vocal jamming-ish singing at the end. Lost his mind just a couple of times indeed.

Possum/Secret Language Instructions/David Bowie/Possum -   If you like banter!

In addition to that banter, throughout the show Trey references the “alligator pit”, which is a ‘moat’ between the stage and the crowd I guess.

More on Antelope. 7 minutes into it Trey is tossing two notes back and forth, building tension until landing into a new lead and a new section. When he does this there’s a great crowd swell. It’s the kind that suggests the audience was really tuned in this night, riding a roller coaster on Trey’s fretboard.

As you can see by my 3 posts in a row that I love this show. A year later I now know that the “measure where they break into a riff all at the same time” is the oom-pa-pa signal. It’s just a party all the way through, bursting with elation and creativity.

Treat yourself to this show if you haven’t, even if it’s just the Weekapaug. Trust me, you’ll love your life for those 10 minutes. Bring the dust pan to scoop up your face afterwards.

Looking at the set list, if Phish played this set list today the set list type phans would flip out.

this antelope = HUGE TITTIES. Great show all around though too. A return to binghamton would be greaat!

Happy anniversary to my favorite show!!! Check out the Weekapaug Groove!!

Been a while since I listened to this one, thanks for the reminder. 1992 is so great in every way.

Antelope and Weekapaug are absolutely insane, and there isn’t a down point to this show at all. Great crowd reactions too, especially to the Mango Song.

A+
