This second set is pretty nasty. Listened to it this morning.
Stash is SPECTACULAR. Anyone who has not heard this one should really do so. The jam starts off fairly chill, with Trey and Page playing melodiously while Fish and Mike hold down the foundation of the groove. Fishman’s cymbols sound especially sharp here. Then it builds into some dark, eerie jamming with each member contributing nicely to the mix. Some really cool '97 dissonance here.
They leave the Stash jamming around 15 minutes for some incredible funk, and the change is pretty seamless. They go right into it: Fish lays down an awesome groove using some woodblocks and cowbells at times, and Trey starts his signature '97 percussive wah playing. Page is rocking the Clavi and Synth, and Mike’s playing is fairly potent, using some badass liquid effect. As the funk progresses it turns into a start/stop jam kinda thing, with each member incredibly locked in and communicating well with each other. The end has some very nice slap work by Cactus. So Crunchy. And a pretty nice segue into Ghost, taboot!
The Ghost jam is dark, eerie, exploratory, and out there. It segues into I saw It Again, which carries on the vibe of this set nicely. This flows right into Wading, which offers a lovely contrast. Very mellifluous and emotional playing by Trey here.
Piper is short, but the long intro is sweet to the ears. Love how it builds up. The outro from these early versions are cool too. Would love to hear them play with that theme again sometime.
Very nice version of Jesus Just Left Chicago. Both solo sections are really soulful. Trey’s quiet part in his solo is especially lovely. You can hear one guy yell “PLAY IT PRETTY FOR ME TREY!”. Aw yeah.
Solid Caspian to top off the set. The intro is blissful.
A random side note: on this particular recording, you can make out this one girl screaming at different times in the set. Her scream is high pitched and sounds like a scream of terror, but it is quite amusing.
