best 2001 in a long time.

best torture in a while

alumni>ltjp>alumni?.. best 20th show gift.

first sloth at the 20th show… awesomer gift.

awesome night.

This show was all over the place, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I mean there were so many outstanding moments, and between them some unbelievable buzz kills depending mostly on whether you like the particular song or not.

The show started with unbelievably high energy with long overdue versions of Alumni Blues > Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues, Big Black Furry Creature from Mars. But from the Jim just about to the Melt, everyone wondered where the show was going. I mean Free Man in Paris? This had to be the request of someone close to the band because it’s hard for me to believe it’s going to become a regular cover. Nice song and all, but what’s next, You’ve Got a Friend? Summer of '89 is a tough song to get into, even though it ended pretty nicely.

But then they came back with a roar with Melt and Sloth, and everyone sat down when TTE started. I of course stayed on my feet and tried to rally support for the song from people around me. They poopood me until the “And as the carousel circles unceasingly,” line and everyone knew over the next several minutes how great this song could be. Thought it shoulda been the set ender, but they brought a really nice Golgi to send us into set break.

Expected the Chalk Dust, got a Chalk Dust. Wasn’t like most Chalk Dusts. Very experimental and totally out of the song structure. They did the same with the SOAMelt in the first set. Didn’t believe they were going to bring it back because they were nowhere near the structure of the song anywhere. And they couldn’t bring the Chalk Dust back to finish and Trey went into Fuckerpants. It’s an all right song and the crowd and Trey love it. It’s totally meh for me, but I know I’ve enjoyed a few. This wasn’t one of them.

I enjoyed the Heavy Things a lot even though it also isn’t one of my favorite songs. I was happy to hear Alaska, I was happy to hear all of the newer material at both Camden shows. But the Alaska didn’t hold me in the outtro jam until almost the very end that sequed into my most favoritist Phish cover, ASZ. Huge version and a nice place to put the Michael Jackson tribute that most people knew was coming.

That sequed nicely into Light which started off nicely but left me hanging in the outtro until it moved nicely into one of the nicest Possums I’ve heard in a while. Lots of crescendos, T&R, multiple sky rockets. One of my favorite songs of the night.

Show was over as far as I was concerned at that point. The Character0 is usually a great set closer, but this one didn’t do it, and the encore was meh.

I have no complaints about this band at all, even if in describing the show, I seem a little bruttal. You can’t describe outstanding performances without some contrast, and even though this show wasn’t as good as the night before overall, it may be a show to DL just for the highlights.

I love this band.

I was SO FREAKIN pumped with our stream and that second starter, Torture>Caspian seemed to rock, then it fell apart for me… Then it picked back up… Then it fell apart… Then it, well you get it…

Great/EPIC start, some freaking excellent middle sections and a hell of an encore! (Shine a Light and Torn And Frayed better stay in rotaion)
Either way, they people at Camden got some GREAT music and there were some bust outs that would have made me SMILE!

It was all over the place Bill and you are 100% correct, it seems that the song placement was off, but on the otherhand the quality and thickness of a few tunes made up for that!!!

Wow, I still wish I could have been at this show!!!

“Trey went into Fuckerpants.”

hahaaaaa, that had me laughin good, bill! i didn’t know you referred to caspian as fuckerpants… or is that a community-wide term?? hilarious

and a nice call by glide9811 regarding trey cutting off a jam with caspian… too funny

This is really MY setlist, besides TTE, I love everything else, even the new stuff, I really wish I could have been there

Saw Furthur in Rochester last night and the show was GREAT, but this show is AWESOME, I am listening to the SBD and it is super super good.

I need to do tours with Phish, I feel like I am missing out on all of this, it blows

Yeah this show resonated in a way none of the shows from Hartford or SPAC last week did. Not to say those were’nt great, and if you prefer any of them thats fine. But this show and I just clicked. Even the slower parts of the first set clicked for me. Alumni>Letter>Alumni absolutely smoked, as did BBFCFM which was the first time my girlfriend ever heard it. I think it scared her!!

Melt may be the most underrated song in the Phish arsenal. It is genius and on this night went THERE!! They brought that shit into the murky deep only to come out the other end in sinister fashion and we were all better off for it. Cept for my friend Jen. She was a little “enhanced” and seriously lost her shit in this Melt Jam. Sloth, like the opening salvo of bustouts was absolutely nailed!

I notice that Trey doesnt go for the green 'Doc for TTE. I think he’s reworked his parts from an open C tuning to standard tuning. It gives it a less etheral sound and enhances some of the twists and turns the song makes and definitely makes for a much denser jam segment. I loved it!

Chalkdust went out there and touched on some great themes. They had space, funk, and futuristic blues covered all within this jam. One of the hottest jams I’ve seen firsthand from them in a while. Heavy things is a song that has grown on me quite a bit. The jams used to be fun, but lately theyve gotten an edge to them that have them sounding phenomenal. Loved this one alot! Then came the Also Sprach. Oh man. Even if none of the MJ jams happened it wouldve been a great 2001. The smooth interplay they had goin’ on leading up to the MJ medley was killer!

Possum and Zero were bonus to me at that point. I really hope this show translates. It was a fucking blast and maybe my favorite 3.0 show out of the 17 I’ve been lucky enough to see.

Just got back from last night’s musical extravaganza. Don’t know if you guys heard or not, buuuuuut the show totally kicked ass. Amazingly, TTE wasn’t the low point…if there even was a low point. On our way to MPP now. See ya there!!!

Yeah, it’s an old rmp term first quoted by Charlie Dirksen, I believe. It’s typically ‘Prince Fuckerpants’ so as not to confuse it with say “Fluffhead”, which could never be.

Right, it was hard to figure. I was texting you Brad and Brett as the songs were coming out, and none of us could make much sense of it. And yet most of the jamming all night was really spot on

I am listening to both Camden SBDs today, the 6/24 is on point throughout! What a great show. 6/25 gets off to a great start, but then dies a horrible death with that craptastic cover and Summer of '89 (my first time hearing it). I am stoppin after that song, but I am certain that SOAM and Sloth will make me more than happy, again. The boys rarely let me down on SOAM. My opinion is likely to swing because the rest of this setlist has lots of gooey goodness.

Wrong board, but that cover of The Rover still has me on a high.

^They won’t let you down on this SOAM, fivefounds. It’s Fiyah. Great work by Trey in here and it sounds like he’s LISTENING to everyone else… I’m not giving up on these boys yet.

That 2001…maybe best ever.

I just listened to that^^^ craptastic cover, and I think it can only mean I’m in love with craptastic.

“That 2001…maybe best ever.”

eeaaaaasssy now

^Ok, ok… BUT energywise, that crowd had to be going ballistic…wooks arms and dreads akimbo, first time they have really gotten exploratory with it 3.0. It is BY FAR my favorite cover they do…I can only hope for one comparable in the next six shows I see this summer.

:):):):):)

What’s craptastic for some, may be dinner for others!

Anyhoo, I finally finished this show. That second set is divine. IN fact I think I may put it on again now. I also have much love for that 2001.

I’m a Joni Mitchell fan.

Bill’s right, this one was all over the place - some very awesome highs (SoaMelt, 2001, the Chalkdust jam) and some real energy-killers (Free Man in Paris, Summer of 89, Heavy Things, Caspian, TTE). But it was interesting because it was weird. How often are you at a Phish show where you hear a couple songs you don’t even recognize in a row? I’m not used to that. It was a strange twist.

Melt was a tune I’ve loved forever, and rarely get to see live. I’d mentioned it earlier in the day (they always seem to know). Matty’s right, too - the 2001 is one of the best I’ve ever heard. I’m really glad the Chalkdust went to weird and awesome places; it gives me faith that when one of “those” songs starts, the band may actually do something cool and interesting with it.

Oh, and by the way: Mike has taken control of Phish. It’s his band now. I’d like to thank Trey for all he’s done, and for graciously stepping aside when it was time to hand over the reins.

What I am reading here about them being “all over the place” jibes with much of what I have been thinking about the shows I have seen so far; a lot of ups and downs within each show. The first set alone of this one was quite a rollercoaster.
The opener was a thrill. There aren’t many originals I haven’t seen live (relative to the vast catalog) and these 2 were certainly unexpected and exciting surprises. BBFCFM is one I welcome hearing every so often because it’s fun and gets everyone pumped. The middle of set one, Army of One-Summer of 89, was slow and they lost me for a bit there, but brought me back with SOAM and the first Sloth I have heard in eons. I have gotten both TTEs they have played thus far this summer and I think I have had my fill, but its a good chance to rest your feet.
Chalkdust was sick. Another unexpected and exciting surprise. For my thoughts on the next song, refer back to Fone’s post. It perfectly articulates what I would want to say. I love Alaska and I don’t care who knows it. It is silly and catchy and fun to get down to. Light had a great jam. The CZ capper was not unexpected since I was at the show and get it approximately 75% of the time.
All in all though, I came away from this show feeling good that I went. The highlights definitely outshine the lowlights.
