Alumni Blues>Letter to Jimmy Page>Alumni Blues!!!

2001 Dance Party!!!

CDT Jam!!!

My favorite part after the initial excitement of actually hearing Alumni>Letter to Jimmy Page>Alumni being played was the Alaska>2001>Light. I am on board with Alaska this go around because it has matured into quite a ripping jam with an awesome theme. The brooding space that was created after Alaska was over sounded like a futuristic machine warming up and once Fishman hit the drumbeat the 2001 Dance Party Machine was officially turned on. After 2001 stopped shakin that ass, the move into Light was made. This jam was remarkably entrancing to me during its short duration with its minimalistic and percussive grooves. It was stopped abruptly in a favor of a move into Possum which tore shit up as usual.

So I am aware of the down time that came during the 1st set and the TTE (which had a nice jam at the end) but the mega-bustout opener and Alaska>2001>Light make this one a keeper.

I’ve listened to this 2001 a few times and I must say that there has been a lot of unsubstantiated talk about the boys playing “as tight” as the '90s since their return, but this rendition is as solid as anything they’ve laid down in the past.

Just a quick observation. I began listening to this show this morning for the first time since being there, and up to the Sloth at the moment, and even though the “Army of One, Free Man in Paris*, Summer of '89” slowed the show up considerably, I liked these versions. I’d like to see them spend more time working these songs a bit more and not follow slower songs so closely, but I’m much more impressed with them on second listening than I was that night.

The Possum from this show may just be my favorite version, ever. I know this is a radical thing to say, and it could change tomorrow when I hear a better version, but for right now, it’s my “iconic” Possum.

There are times when they play this song, that it’s obvious that although they play it well, they are just going through the motions, they just don’t “mean it”. Definitely not so with this version. They were all very much all over the spirit of Possum, from beginning to end, and it was excuted flawlessly. Just a great performance, and highlight of the show, even in the light of a great 2001.

Wait. Why is it dark for the Alumni Opener? What time did they get started?

Looks a bit cavernous.

Looks a bit seagullish, too.

looks a bit greenish too…

First anny of my third show. this was really a special one for me. very much so. That second set was some of the most ballin-est shit I’ve ever seen.

The pav there is not open on either side. always dark in there.

^ I was Page side orchestra close to the pit for the show this year. It felt like an indoor show!
