Set 2 short possibly due to thunderstorm. *With Jerry Douglas on dobro. #With Jerry Douglas on dobro, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Tim O’Brien on fiddle (and lead vocals on “Doin’ My Time”). ^Gary “El Buho” Gazaway on trumpet; each guest took a solo. **Trey on small keyboard before vocal jam.

This is a really fun show to listen to on tape, but I could understand some people being disappointed (underwhelmed?) in person. The opening trio of songs are performed very strongly, and the dobro addition to Wolfmans Brother is absolutely supreme. The rest of the set is really strong, especially with the Roggae really trying to take some big leaps with the guests. Also one of the more interesting Poor Hearts I have heard.

Second set highlight is easily the DWD, at about 18 minutes it definitely goes through a nice progression of jams. Caspian is always welcome to me (I don’t think I would have ever muttered those words ten years ago), and the YEM is strong if a bit rushed. Standard encore leads to a shorter second set.

I’m a fan of the guests, but I could understand if this was the only show you were able to see for the tour, they may have taken too much of a chunk out of the show, especially considering how short the second set is.

For us who did the entire tour it was a great treat in retrospect. I agree with most of your summation.

^^the second set was short due to a raging thunderstorm. I was really weirded out from the drugs I took that night but it was a decent show. Thankfully I was in the pavillion so I didn’t get wet. I love this DWD and I thought the wolfman’s and poor heart were great with the special guests.
