1: Dogs Stole Things, Limb By Limb, Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin, Llama-> Wading in the Velvet Sea, Lizards Jam*, Oblivious Fool

2: Also Sprach Zarathustra-> Julius, Magilla-> Ya Mar^, Ghost-> Take Me to the River**

E: Funky Bitch#

*Very slow, no lyrics, largely unrecognizable until the end. ^Apparently they took turns jamming in pairs: Fish and Page, Trey and Mike, hi-hat and clavinet (Fish and Page again), bell and low guitar (Mike and Trey), crash cymbal and Rhodes (Fish and Page), footstomping (band and audience); also Magilla teases. **An Al Green cover, from his “Explores Your Mind” album. Also performed by Talking Heads. #With Son Seals and members of his band (guitar, trumpet, bass, and drums) and Fish dancing at the front of the stage; “Funky Bitch” is a Son Seals song); with “Bathtub Gin” teases.

Another gem from Europe 97! Not as remarkable as the 6/25, but still very creative and improvisational. The first set is pure Europe 97. Funky, phish-y and very solid. The weird Lizards Jam is slow and kind of funky. I love the 50’s rocking Oblivious Fool!

Set II is very exploratory. The 2001 is great and melts right into a Julius. The Magilla->Ya Mar is awesome with some real magic occurring during the Ya Mar jam. They take turns soloing and duets as well. Concentrating on different parts of their repertoire. The band is having fun and playing well. The Ghost is long and funky with a really strange almost cover of take me to the river at the end. They don’t play the instrumentation, but do yell take me to the river over the jam. Interesting stuff.

The encore is an awesome Funky Bitch featuring Son Seals and some of his backing band. The horn section sounds great on this one.

This Ghost is mind blowing.

Bathtub Gin is funk-tacular.

This show is awesome. The boys were quite playful on this night and it shows on the tapes. For examples, try the ending of Julius and when they take turns jamming during Ya Mar. Will and Adam are correct in their statements.

Also, Mike drops some serious slap bombs during Magilla. Also, 2001 was a great way to start set II.

If you haven’t heard this show, One recommends giving it a listen.

On the other side of the spectrum, I find the Llama with the slower, funky vibe… to be not great at all.

Really like this show. Awesome Bathtub. The Lizards jam is interesting, but still gives me the chills during trey’s solo. 2001>Julius is money. The Magilla>Ya Mar>Ghost section is probably my favorite part of the show though. Sounds great and sounds like the band is having fun. Crash Symbol and Rhodes takes the cake for Ya Mar duets!!

I just finished listening to the entire Summer Europe tour and I think this show is my favorite over them all. Even over the 6/25 and Amsterdam shows. I don’t know why, but there are a lot of pleasant curve balls in this show that just seem to get me really excited. Pretty much everything from the Bathtub Gin to the end of the show is :wtf: :arrow_right:

I think this Bathtub Gin is my favorite jam of the tour. Every note in it is just spot on and is sooooo good. They played a few of the slower Llamas in 97 and all of them but this one I don’t care for. For some reason I like this one. I also love love love the Lizards jam. Especially how the first few minutes are just spacey funk until seemingly out of nowhere the Lizards guitar solo emerges. Made my spine tingle a bit. Then Trey destroys the geetar during Oblivious Fool.

I don’t really have much to add in regards to the second set, other than it is WAAAAY better than one might expect just by looking at the setlist. But then again, that was the deal in 97. In both this Magilla and the one in VA Beach Mike fucking blows it up. Love that shit.

^Is there a good source for this one?

I think the first time I heard this, it was listed as Gin->Funk Jam. And funk jam it was.

Def. my top 5 shows I wish I could have attended.

This is fo sho my fave of the summer Europe stuff.

I think this was one of the first tapes to make it’s way across the pond from that tour and I still have it in my tape deck of the truck at my cabin
