Ah, yes. My introduction to live Phish. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Honestly, I thought I had stepped into another dimension. A freak show like nothing I had seen before. This was just the lot. The show itself was insane. My buddy and I had tickets in the pavilion about 2/3 of the way back Page-side. I remember Ya Mar and Moma but not much else from the first set. I remember hearing “2001” thinking “Where the fuck do I know this from??!” Then Disease came, which was the first song I actually recognized. And Moby Dickness ensued. Was pretty stoked to hear Hood and it’s still one of my favorite versions.

After the show, in my buddy’s car we were forced into the church parking lot for the sobriety checkpoint. Of course, for whatever reason, my buddy had a bb gun that looked exactly like a real gun. And about 30 air fresheners on his mirror. And because he had spilled something earlier in the week his back seat was pushed up or something so it was all funky. Actual conversation:

Cop - That’s a lot of air fresheners you got there.
Kurt - Yep.
Cop - Enough to clean out an entire Wal-Mart.
Kurt - Possibly…

He let us go without incident. So strange, so surreal, so fucking awesome.

^ Damn checkpoints. I’ve heard of these, but never actually been pulled over in one. Lucked out there for sure.

What else can be said about this show. I love this show. Definite Top 5 show’s I’ve ever attended. The second set is madness, but don’t sleep on the first set either.

I’ll never forget my buddy during the second set. We were pretty “out there” and he looked at me and said, “I think their going to play Moby Dick after each song.” This was after the 3rd one I think. Hilarious. Maybe you had to be there.

This is still one of my all time favorite shows. The Moby Dicks, the Chalk Dust reprises, the fun of second set.

“Chalk dust torture…chalk dust torture! We are The Phish from Vermont!!! Thank you very much! Chalk Dust Torture…”

This show has one of the most criminally underrated "Moma Dance"s ever performed!

The first set Drowned is overlooked too. It was a pain in the ass to keep a setlist that night but it was well worth it! We used to pick 5 songs and 1 rare before each show as a game. I nailed Moma Dance, 2001, DWD, Runaway Jim and HYHU. Had to wait another night for Crosseyed.

Oh, hello.

It was about this time exactly 10 years ago that I got my very first taste of live PHISH!

^ Ah, now I see why you like 2000 so much. Same reason I like Phish 3.0 so much really.

It’s a much-maligned year, for good reason, but I like it. It has its ups and downs, just like any other year.
