07/12/03 - Gorge Amphitheatre - George, Washington

Set 1: Taste, Mexican Cousin, Stash, NICU, Heavy Things, Mock Song*, Army of One**, Maze

Set 2: Piper, Two Versions of Me*, Tweezer, Dogs Stole Things, Water in the Sky, Ghost, David Bowie

Encore: Frankenstein, Tweezer Reprise

 * debut; ** first time played by Phish, Vida Blue original

Just revisited this second set recently. It’s worth a listen, especially for the Ghost. Strangely, Trey sings the lyrics in a lower octave, basically speaking the words alongside Fish. Once the jam gets going, T works his way through several different rhythmic grooves and they build to a really nice peak before pulling the Ghost theme back in at the end. Definitely the highlight of the show, and goes to prove that 2.0 has it’s moments.

On a side note, there is a Free jam in the Tweezer. They replicate the bass jam segment and Trey begins an instrumental version of the lyrics. Not the most increadible thing you’ve ever heard, but kind of cool when you realize what he’s doing. It lasts for several minutes and they return to it later. Also, there is a true segue into DST. Nice bluesy groove before they make it official. So it should read:

Piper, Two Versions, Tweezer***>Dog Stole Things, Water in the Sky, Ghost, David Bowie

***Free Jam

Oh and Water in the Sky is a disaster.

Just listened to this show for the first time. Sounds tired and uninspired. Really lacking the energy.
The Taste to start and the Maze to end the first set are good but that’s about it. Second set is not that much better except for the Ghost and Bowie to finish. I even cut the Tweezer off before it ended cuz it was just… uninteresting.
Overall, it’s worth skipping.
However, the next night…

You could hear the JJLC coming for the next night.

Saw the devil this night while waiting in line to pee.

So did my boy. It was weird. He was cool though
