Encore: Loving Cup

Oh baby.

And that surprise Reprise, got to love it.

I had seen 11 shows before this. (8 of them were from the lawn at Alpine Valley.) I really wanted to be as close to the stage as possible. I was excited to get pit tickets through PTBM.

It takes about 3 1/2 hours to get to Austin from my house. (I burned some CDs for the drive: the previous show in Los Angeles and Halloween Chilling, Thrilling set.) My cousin lives on the south side of Austin, so I had a free place to stay 20 miles from the venue. It was so easy to get to there. No highways. Zero traffic. The lot looks empty? It was.

Everyone was ready when the sun finally went down.

Party Time

These pictures aren’t great, but you get the idea. I guess I’d better just stand still to take pictures next time.

It was so much fun to be in the pit. That is the only way to see any live music. For me, it adds to the experience to be able to see the band up close and see their equipment and see how they communicate with eachother. There were a lot of songs (10) that I would take out in order to hear something else at a show instead, but it was still Phish and it was still awesome. First set I liked Free, Wolfman’s, Possum, Water In the Sky, Dirt, and Antelope. ^ Like Will said, 46 Days -> The Dogs -> 46 Days to open the second set was insane. I liked Piper and Ghost. Jibboo is a favorite. (Trey had trouble getting the delay loop to start for the jam. He was hurriedly stepping on different pedals. When he finally got it going he looked at the crowd and shrugged his shoulders and laughed.) I like Waiting All Night, but it was just played at the previous show. Blaze On was good. After Bowie, Trey quickly motioned to the crowd to wait just a second while he talked to the other guys. They went right into Suzy Greenberg. They all had huge smiles when they started Tweezer Reprise. I wonder if they saved it for Austin knowing that it would be so hot. (I kept my elbows in the whole night because touching anyone was a wet and squishy experience. A few cheers throughout the night were for light breezes.) Loving Cup is never bad.

It was an incredible night of Phish regardless of the temperature or what I thought about the setlist. I floated out of there with a smile on my face, content and thrilled that I would get to do it again the next night.

Nice photos!
