08-03-97 The Gorge, Quincy (George), WA

1: Bathtub Gin-> Foam-> Samson Variation, Dirt, Vultures, My Mind’s Got a Mind of Its Own, Twist, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Limb By Limb, Character Zero

2: Julius, Simple-> Jam, Fluffhead, Lifeboy, Taste, Hello My Baby, Frankenstein

E: Bouncing Around the Room, Slave to the Traffic Light

This show is kind of weird. In terms of “type II” stuff, the highlight might be the Bathtub Gin->Foam and the Twist, both in the first set. The Julius is really cool too in terms of getting a little bit off the beaten path. I had high hopes for this Simple and it’s good, but not nearly as good as some of the other stuff going down on this tour. Other than that the Slave encore is really pretty.

Other than that though it’s still a good show in the context of 1997. They drop a few classic Phish tunes that with the advent of the whole slew of new tunes for the summer had become quite rare: Foam (first time in 37 shows), Fluffhead (first time in 35 shows) and Lifeboy(while not a ‘classic’, hadn’t been played in 45 shows and wouldn’t be played again until 1998).
