Notes: The soundcheck began with You Can Get It If You Really Want (Jimmy Cliff) and it included quotes from Trey of You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Rock On (David Essex) was briefly played after Hey Joe in the soundcheck. The Marco Esquandolas lyric in Antelope was changed to Mike-O Esquandolas, and was followed by a short bass solo by Mike. Light contained a tease of Seven Below from Fish.

Timber goes dark real fast. Great intro on Hood. Tight playing overall.

Complete show. Very good audio and video quality.

Like every show, especially a tour closer I walked away with with the euphoria of a great show fading into melancholy until fall tour begins. This summer was the beginning of my Phish experience starting in Hartford for 2 shows, then the pair in MPP, and the two closing dates in JB. I was hooked at the start, and completely taken in by the two Hartford shows. In the time between now and then, even without the experience of 1.0/2.0 and last year, i’ve seen them improve steadily each show and the audiences have been amazing as well.

My lasting memory from Hartford was hearing Hood for the first time. It was bliss, something music had never made me feel before. I wasn’t sure that anything would eclipse that moment, or the crowds exasperation and subsequent explosion during the second tweezer reprise. I clearly inexperienced, since I have now learned that Phish is capable of creating so many unique and special experiences every time out when they are on top of their game.

Jones Beach 8/18 definetly shell shocked me. I’m not at the point as a fan where I go to a show with hopes for a Gamehenge set, or to hear a new cover. Granted I certainly appreciate it, but as a new fan its mostly in retrospect that I realize these rarities. What I’m really starting to see is a band that is confident enough to explore new avenues, and let each other take the reigns. My highlights were Chalkdust, Axilla, Timber, Hood, and YEM.

Up until Chalkdust, things seemed a bit tame. I loved sample, and DWD started us off with a bang, but as darkness descended and I started to see a few people sit down and dancers slow to a sway I knew we need a pick me up. Chalkdust was perfect there, got everyone bouncing and ready for the great jams that closed out the first set.

The second set here was special. Axilla was like an assault, firing out of the set break into high gear. Then Timber followed with a dark stormy mood setting. Both were firsts for me as well so that might influence it, but I felt like the table was set and everyone there was tuned in. The Light mini jam soared though its not my favorite song. 46 + My Friend My Friend were solid but only served to build the anticipation of what the last few songs would be. Then Hood began. The intro with Trey cranking and slowly tapping his way through after made it clear they were taking their time with this one. Personally, I was hoping to get another Hood badly since it made my night in Hartford. As good as the first time was, everything after the 6 minute mark had me enthralled at Jones. Trey’s patience, letting Fish and Mike carry sections while he delicately worked his way in really made it sound rich and full. The peak was like a 10 second downpour during a solar eclipse, making everyone tingle from head to toe. Fish was killing it during the outro. Watching and listening to it since, it shows everything they’ve accomplished this tour in my humble opinion. Tweezer never disappoints as I have learned seeing it 3 times this summer. As for YEM, I feel like it really took me a few shows and a lot of listening to appreciate this song properly. My first one I almost felt a bit off track for some reason but now I was ready and they really delivered to close out the second set.

Disclaimer: I hope my lack of experience and claims don’t offend any more travelled fans if i’m overstating things. Just recounting what i saw.

See you guys on fall tour

^Nice recap of this show.

I was there as well and really enjoyed the 2nd set… the Timber>Light>46 Days was nice and I loved this Hood. MYMF is also a personal favorite so it was great to hear.

In re-listening to both Jones Beach shows I am really enjoyiong the jamming that is occurring on their newer songs, both BDTNL from the previous night and this Light had some nice jamming. It seems to me more type II style jamming is developing which I enjoy.

Surprised there isn’t more talk about this one… this second set BRINGS IT!

Timber>Light>46Days>MFMF is amazing stuff.

Also really liked whatever Trey was doing in the intro of Hood.

Antelope had some nice peaks as well.

Both nights at JB absolutely smoked.

Most people prefer night one, and it was indeed fantastic.

But I prefered this night. The only stumble all night was Destiny. Other than that the first set was way high energy and the second set was my favorite I got to catch all summer.

I had been wanting a type I DWD for awhile. Not that I don’t like all the jammy second set DWD’s I’ve caught . But I’ve always been a sucker for those high energy 94-95 compact DWDs.

This one got the show going strong. Sample is a song that’s growing on me again. For the first time in like 15years. Its best days may indeed be long gone, but I feel like every time they play it it gets a little more energetic and they all phrase around the three chord explosion a little more compellingly each time. Fishman in particular. All the times they played it in 09 I felt his drumming was way cookie cutter on the jam segment, but he has breathed some life back into this one in 2010.

The band had alot of fun with reggae intro’s on this night with both Guelah and Hood. Extended interplay and playful teasing of the crowd in both. I’ll take a moment to pat myself on the back by letting everyone know I called the antelope set closer right before Destiny. And this one is alot of fun, and has multiple wonderful peaks. My girl was a little enhanced on this night and got her first Antelope. I love when the boys scare her a bit. When they stopped on a dime and the crowd roared she was just standing there with a befuddled gaze. I noticed and had to give her a playful pat on the butt with a “you’re allright, you’re allright” to bring her back!

We both had a pretty good chuckle.

But the monster of the show was the Timber>Light>46Days>MFMF segment. 46 days in particular is a tight rager that got the crowd grooving HARD! At least were I was. And it melted into Zachs bay so smoothly out of Light. By the end of MFMF whatever we got was bonus to me. Little did I know that the bonus would involve an evil bastard named Harry, a Tweezer that is living breathing proof that Phish does’nt need twenty five minutes to light a spark in you via their intense communication , and another phenomenal NY YEM.

One thing I noticed about the Tweezer was again, it ended so naturally, so that when it did, and the Slient intro was being played you could sense the band loved the way the set was going that they attacked there respective parts with such vigor. It made for a really strong Silent. It may not translates to tape , but the way Mike in particular was attacking his role in the Silent intro was mesmerizing.

It made me think back to Hartford when Trey hit the brakes for Horse out of Sand and what followed was a pretty lame Silent in the morning. This was the antithesis of that.

The two nights at JB felt like extra credit after a dirth for shows along the east coast. They Scored bigtime in my book!!

This show has the rock solid Phish that we’ve come to see a lot of in 2010. Disease is reminiscent of 94-95 type stuff. the Sample that followed definitely seemed to set the tone for the overall “classic” setlist of this show. Guelah brought some nice reggae/funk flavor early in the show. Poor Heart was a nice treat and was played well. Ocelot didn’t seem to get much reaction from the audience (at least to me it didn’t). Decent Ocelot jam but not as good as the previous version of it that I saw (11/25/09).

Chalkdust followed and brought some excellent energy along with it. Audience was all over it. Some very good playing in the solo section, especially Trey. Bathtub Gin was another crowd pleaser and contained a stereotypically tight 3.0 Gin jam. Tube (one of my favorites) was an excellent treat. However, I felt it was way too short (Side note: Phish, please start making Tube longer in 3.0). Destiny Unbound was awesome and I think it’s very cool that Phish took this rarity and put it into semi-regular rotation this year. Very good version. Joy followed next and served as a fitting breather before the set closer. I called the Antelope closer from a mile way. This version delivered and made me feel very satisfied with the first set.

Set Two:
Axilla was a cool and unexpected opener. Good energy especially when it >'d into Timber. Timber was a very well played version and set the mood nicely for the rest of the set. Light was next and brought out the crazy jams for really the only time during the whole show. One of the better versions, I’d say. 46 Days had great energy from the band and audience. Great improv on this version just under 7 minutes. In the days preceding the show, I got a string feeling that they were gonna play My Friend, My Friend and Harry Hood. And they did both of them together. MFMF continued with dark, rocking feel of this set. Hood is one of my favorites and had a nice jam. Definately a mood shift but not really in a bad way at all. Tweezer followed and was completely unexpected. Good jam and good segue into Horse>Silent. Horse>Silent marked the only time Phish cooled it down in the second set and I really enjoyed it. “1-2 1-2-3-4” - YEM. Very nice closer and more solid playing.

Encore:
Suzy was a great upbeat choice as an encore and felt very appropriate. Tweeprise was expected and fun.

The word I’d use to describe this show would be satisfying. As someone who is generally new to seeing Phish, this show definitely made the differences between listening to Phish and going to see Phish much more apparent to me.

Tweezer -> The Horse is THE way Horse is meant to be played. A perfect landing pad after a sweet jam. The segue is perfect. I think this is what Trey was trying to do a few times this summer, at least one I know, (someone help me out here?) but wasn’t able to sync the notes for Horse with the jam that was going on. Here that wasn’t an issue at all. As the tweezer jam is sorta disassociating, and floating into ambient sounds, Trey delicately laws down the start to Horse. So sweet.
