Well I think I should share a little bit of the journey to this show. I am condensing it because I’m tired and don’t really feel like thinking much.
So as a few of you know, I checked the venue ticket office sometime in the afternoon and realized that they had re-released floor seats. I had been waiting on that for months, and for some reason it dawned on me to check it Tues. afternoon. I was eating lunch and realized the Stl show was today not Wed. so I quickly ate and went outside to get cell signal. Keep in mind I had checked for these tickets about 4 times a week the last 2+ months. So this all happened at about 12:30pm est time which is an hour ahead of the time in Stl. So I quickly called my gf to see if she wanted to go but she had plans. Needless to say everyone I called had plans.
So I got on here for motivation
Levi and dooj pretty easily talked me into what I really wanted to do from the beginning and that was driving over to the show. The drive was about 5 hours and I got there just in time for the show. I ended up about 8 people back dead center from Trey . When you solo a show, it never fails that people are extremely excited to talk to you. I met some really cool couples from Chicago and Mississippi and the short wait for Set I began.
The PYITE opener was very tight and a great way to start this show. The energy in the building was unbelievable, something that only small arena’s can provide I think. The first 3 songs, while sometimes considered standard were very good. I was a bit worried when Ocelot started, only b/c I had a feeling it was going to be a “standard” show played really well. Those songs were played nearly 10 mins each which imo is a treat and I really liked the way Ocelot is starting to develop.
The Reba was very solid and I got the first whistling ending I’ve personally seen. IDK was great but one of the best highlights of set one for me was the Curtain>Peaches. Seeing as though they have only not played with 4 times since the inception of /With, that pause where your waiting to see if the band will dive deeper of segue into a new song had me holding their breath. Going into peaches was a great way to sans the /with. While it may not have been the best version of the song, it was great. The guy I met from Miss actually told me before the show hes been chasing a Peaches since '97, and tonight was the first night he got his wish. I was extremely happy for him.
I’m writing too much, quick finish to set 1. I am bored with mound. I saw it at Cinncy in '11 and outta the last 7 times they have played it I’ve been there for 3 of them. The sloth was a bit off when it started but worked itself out nicely. I know we are all getting tired of Possum, but the >Quinn really picked up the energy and was nicely done.
I have seen CDT so many times over the past few years that when set 2 started I was a little disappointed, but thats only until it starting the decent down the cold granite steps. Frankie Says was fantastic. The song was played due in large part to a guy in the stands on Fish’s side who held it up as the band was walking off after set 1. I noticed Mike look up at something and then realized it was the sign. Undermine was also a nice welcoming change for a set 2 this leg. Not a huge fan of the song but the way it was worked in was great. Sand wasn’t extremely exploratory but was played very well into Walk Away. The crowd started to lose its shit when Walk Away started, I think CDT>Walk Away was phenomenal. Then came the fucking LxL. Saw it early this summer at DC2 when the asshole held up the “Chinese Warhol” Sign and killed the energy of the set. Needless to say I was a bit bummed, but then…did they change songs 2 times?? No, that was one nasty LxL. Being there I remember thinking, what the fuck are they doing, with a huge ass smile on my face. But just to let everyone know they were still playing it, the dropped back into it for 30 sec’s to finish it off.
Julius>2001 was another very good segment of the show. Personally, the YeM was my favorite part of this show. Not necessarily because it was musically better than the early parts of Set 2, but because its not only my 2nd favorite song of all time, behind A day in the Life(Beatles version), but because the crowd, band, glowsticks, lights, everything was just perfect. The smiles on everyone’s face when this song started was priceless. Show of Life was a great 1 song ender. It kind of just put the cherry on top of an already unbelievable sundae.
So theres my not so short synopsis of the show. I drove the 5 hours back that night and got in about 5:30am. I was exhausted the next 2 days but it was so so worth it. If I don’t make it to NYC for NYE this year, this was def. a show that will hold me over until the big things '13 have in store for us.
