1/2 Phish + The Duo (Chicago, 7/20/06)

Let’s make a list of who’s def going:

  1. Leo (Brett)
  1. Leo (Brett)
  2. grabs666(brian)
  3. Phinest (Chris)

I’ll be the tall guy with dark blonde hair and my friend is short and egyptian. I call bin laden for short. Or T. Probably T is better. I PM’s my phone # to Chris, anyone else want it let me know

  1. Leo (Brett)
  2. grabs666(brian)
  3. Phinest (Chris)
  4. Ghost (Eli)

I won’t be there right at 5:30, which sucks because I was hoping to get close to the front. I hope to be there before 6:00. I’m the tall guy with the cane and the eyepatch thing on my glasses. Damn that eyepatch thing.

I shall have a bright orange bandanna on my noggin’, I’m trying to join the citrus gang.

fuck the bloods and crips, orange you glad you’re in the citrus?

I’ll be in the lot around 4:30 chillin’ some Fat Tires with my boy. There’s free parking and it should be sawweeeeeet.

FYI - Trey is scheduled to throw out the first pitch before the Cubs/Astros game today

At least that’s what it says on Trey’s website

I wonder if he’ll sing “Take me out to the ballgame” during the 7th innning stretch?!!!

2:20 gametime, I think WGN (chicago) starts broadcasting at 2!

^ Thanks for the heads up, other Ghost. I’ll put a tape in the VCR. That would be cool if he sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” I hope his first pitch makes it to the plate.

Well, Trey should be all warmed up for the show after a little baseball. Keep your fingers crossed for special guests Page and Fish. I’ll see you guys there. I got a couple phone numbers. I’m excited about an Oh Kee Pa meetup.

Man, wish I could see the first pitch. Gonna have to set the Tivo for the game and hope he sings the 7th inning. Maybe even him and Mike sing it. Sweeeeeeet!
Anyway, it’s a wonderul cloudy & rainy day here in Chicago, and I’m getting itchy to leave work and head downtown!
I have Leo’s & Ghost’s numbers so I will hit you guys up when I get there and look forward to a meetup! If anyone else wants to pm me their didgits, I will call you upon arrival. See you there!!!

with our luck all 4 members of Phish will show up and perform an a capella version of “take me out to the ball game”

OK…

the area VP of Comcast was the one that threw out the first pitch, not Trey. what the fuck!

maybe he’s singing in the 7th inning. who knows. goddamnit.

ok another update…

they did a plug for Trey’s concert (charter pavillion, call for tickets now!) and showed a clip of him throwing out the first pitch. i dont know if it was today because they showed someone else doing it.

he was wearing a cubs jersey that looked WAY too big on him, and the pitch was awful, but he had a huge grin on his face!

trey + baseball don’t really seem to go together.

they don’t apparently.

it was HIGH and INSIDE (on a right handed batter).

Announcer: “Trey will be bringing his guitar to the Charter One Pavilion…should be a great show.”

I really liked this show. Trey throwing a ball out at Wrigley Field and then projecting all his vibes from that experience onto everyone else through “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and some great teases throughout the show was incredible. He had that huge smile the whole show. They all looked like they were having a great time.
The Duo played for about 45 minutes, and then there was a half hour, maybe longer, break before Mike and the Italians. Russo and Benevento were cool. Both of them really looked like they were enjoying themselves.
Lots of wild jams with all four guys contributing in a face-melting way. I will say that “Mud City” is my least favorite song, and I wasn’t thrilled to hear it as the encore. But it was still way better than Bon Jovi tonight at Soldier Field…which Phinest pointed out to me last night. (Awesome to meet you, man.) I wasn’t able to meet any other OKP’ers. Everyone got to the show at different times, and I had to leave right after to catch the last train North out of the concrete jungle.
The venue is kickass. It’s right on the lake facing East towards the city. Some of the skyline is visible. It adds to the experience…the sun goes down and the buildings are lit up in the dark. It was overcast and humid, but it never rained. I thought it was great.
I bought four tickets months ago. One each for my girlfriend and I, but the other two were unclaimed at first. A couple of my cousins live in Madison, Wisconsin. They’ve seen Phish with me before, and I knew they’d want to go. Justin was able to make it, but Quin had a prior engagement. He was definitely disappointed. So Justin was able to drive like the bat of hell that he is and pick up his younger sister Sarah in Grayslake, Illinois. She’s 17 and she was just having a lazy summer vacation day. She was surprised to see and Justin and thrilled to be whisked away to the city for a GRAB concert. She fit right in with her tye-dye shirt and her self-decorated jeans. She said it was the best concert she’s ever been to.
So a big finale to this GRAB tour this weekend at 10,000 Lakes. Then Trey can thank The Duo for rekindling the fire in his soul, call Page and Fish, and get this show on the road. Halloween here we come. The acoustic break with just Mike and Trey was so good. Mike on the banjo…YES! They sang “Poor Heart” and “My Sweet One” to soothe the Phish soul. (A Runaway Jim would have floored me.) “On the Road Again” ruled. Just tour as Phish again already!!!
I saw a small sign in the crowd. It said “ANY TUBE.” Yes, any tube would have been great, but it was not to be. Trey preceeded “My Sweet One” by saying that it was composed by John Fishman. I immediately hoped for a Mike/Trey acoustic Tube. But no worries, they’ll play Tube 10/31.
I think the Charter One Pavillion holds 7,500 people. I wonder how close to selling out the show was. I didn’t feel packed in at all. I was standing in the crowd in the front maybe eight people back. (Phinest was able to snag a spot right in the middle on the rail.) So why can Phish fill Alpine Valley 100 miles to the North, but no one shows up for just Mike and Trey? Maybe it just became the whole Phish experience for a lot of people. They’re more thrilled by headies in the lot, brah as opposed to Mike and Trey on banjo and acoustic guitar. There were lots and lots of high school age boys. Lots of boys in general. We all know that Phish isn’t exactly a chick-band. I’d say the male to female ratio is 75:25. It carries over to all side-projects. Look at crowd scenes…the cover of The Companion, other concert photos, the DVDs. I know there are some great women that like Phish (Momamomma, Funky, Ladyphish, CemeteryRoses (MIA)…I’m looking in your direction,) but they are rare. Luckily, I’m converting my girlfriend little by little. It just takes constant Phish pouring out of all speakers. I should make flashcards…"->" on one side and “segue” on the other.

Holy shit…I’ll stop now. This post brought to you by the letter “M” and the number “420.”

nice review ghost.

im glad you had a good time man. i will say one thing about mud city. check out the atlanta and cleveland versions. they are both jammed out and amazing. my guess is that they didnt really jam it out as an encore. but when they jam it out, its fucking sweet.

I would have to agree with evrything that Ghost said. The place is just awsome. Ghost, it was a pleasure to meet you and Jamie. It sounds like you guys had as much fun as I did. I wish I would have been able to get you guys up near me, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
I gotta say (and I know that this is biased because of where I snagged a spot) but that ranks as one of the best shows I’ve seen, NON-Phish shows. I know that it was 1/2 of Phish, but you get the point. The Duo totally blew me away! I can’t believe that 2 guys can make such tight ass music! Marco was the shit. I think that we exchanged nods about 6-7 times the whole night. When he dedicated a song to the guy (he thought it was a girl!) that fished out behind me, that was f’n wicked. It sucked to see someone fish out like this poor kid did, but alas he was fine, and he actually ended up making it back up to the front for the last couple songs of the night.
I would have to agree that Mud City kinda just dragged on for a bit too long, but again, from where I was, they could have played Jingle Bells and I would have loved it. I can’t tell you how great it was to have Mike and Trey a mere 15-20 feet away from you. I was totally awe stricken for like the first 3-4 songs of the show. One thing I have to say to anyone at any show that does this…
STOP THROWING THE DAMN GLOWSTICKS/GLOWRINGS AND THE FUCKING BAND!!!
It’s cool to toss them all around, but what good does it do to try and peg the guys while they’re dropping funky-ass tunes!!
Someone actually pegged Mike in the nuts with a glowring! He just kept on dropping the funk like nothing happened! What a pro!! Then, the last song, or 2nd to last song I don’t remember, some asshole threw a 1/2 full cup of something and pegged Marco in the head!!! Real fucking smoothe, dickweed!!!
Anyway, enough ranting. Ghost, again, it was awsome to meet you! Glad to see that you guys made the last train to Clarksville. Leo, sorry we couldn’t meet up, but I’m sure we’ll get another chance when Phish comes 'round!
All in all, I think that show kicked ass, and I woudn’t mind seeing them again if/when they come back around in the fall.

^ Man, Phinest, I forgot about a bunch of that stuff from the show. (I guess it was breezy where I was standing.) So the passed-out-kid reappeared later? Well, that’s great, but he should just drink more water and save everyone the trouble of picking his ass up. And it was very cool that Marco dedicated the song to him. There were a lot of glowsticks for awhile, and it was so lame to throw them at the band. And I totally forgot about Marco wearing a beer. Whoever threw that needs some serious help.

The show is already up on etree. I’m looking forward to hearing it again. My favorite song was Hap-Nappy. (Mike was dropping bombs throughout the whole song. Just blowing apart his own song and locking onto rhythms that thumped in my soul.) You have to give it a listen. And Mike switched to an acoustic guitar briefly during the “Who Are You” jam. Cool musicians having a cool time and making cool music. Cool.
