This show was unreal!

We listened to parts again on the way home (mark me down as a fan of the built in download price—the livephish app lets you stream almost immediately after the show) and they blew my mind all over again. This Light is fantastic (and more Manteca teases!) and the Ghost is filthy. I’ve seen Light at half the shows I’ve been to, but this one was by far the best. Gorgeous and funky, just killer. The Ghost>Mango was insane and then Weekapaug picks up Night Nurse, Ghost, and ends with Llama Reprise? Seriously, did I imagine seeing this?

Not to mention that Mule was the only song in the first set that wasn’t a first timer for me. Incredible night.

The OKP section was awesome, it was cool to meet all you guys this week. New Years is starting to feel way too far away!

Everyone’s out of the office so I’m about to listen through again from the beginning. I can’t wait to hear AC—they’ve obviously been practicing hard and it should rage. Everyone who’s going, have a blast!

This show blew my head off as I raged from 10th row center on the floor. Such a great show, and conclusion to my 5 night run.

^^Hey Catherine! Great times indeed, glad you could hang w/us

Did this show actually happen? For all I know, I could be dead from a crash on the drive up right now and be like, dead-dreaming all of it.

If this show is what happens when you die, bring that shit on.

Not such a fan of the Ghost lyrics sung over the paug jam…doesn’t really fit so well imo. Other than that small bit, a phenomenal show!

Page is king of this Mango. Love the makisupa lyrics too.

That Weekapaug sounds so '93 with the weird lurching, kind of atonal riff Trey throws in there.

^ Dude that Weekapaug is HUGE. And I’ve been thinking that all tour: this shit sounds like some old Phish. So so so dissonant and harmonious at the same time. I am just beyond excited for New Years right now!

This is seriously the best show of 3.0 so far. I know people say that about shows all the time, but this one is special. Absolutely unbelievable playing, start to finish. My review starts with the second set, though. Possum is raging for a full 10 minutes, and then an excellent Light with great jamming and more Manteca teases. This goes into a strong, purposeful Mike’s with lots of evil licks from Trey. I don’t usually like Simple, but this one is really beautifully played, especially by Trey. Makisupa is funny; I think Trey might be smoking a bit again after hearing that lyric, but who knows. Night Nurse is one of the biggest treats one the show. When Trey sings the lyric “there’s a patient by the name of Gregory” you can hear the crowd explode. Very beautiful version of that song. Ghost -> Mango is great, solid jamming there as well. And then the bomb drops. This Weekapaug is unreal!!! Teases of like 5 different songs, and then, just as they finish the song, boom goes the dynamite and Llama comes flying out of left field (although Trey was playing the chords during the final strumming section, I don’t think anyone expected a full-on reprise). Out of control high energy in a song that is less than one minute, and when they hit that last collective note, the place explodes. And rightfully so. That second set is a gorgeous masterpiece, one for the ages.

And by the way, I love the Show of Life encore. I like that song more and more every time I hear it, and I would much rather hear it than something like Waste, so it fills its slot in the show very well. After playing with such outrageous energy for the whole show, I think the band deserved to chill out and play one like this. Plus, Trey’s solo is downright sublime (as always), and if for nothing else, it is worth a listen for that.

MVP (other than Mike because I think he is the overall MVP of 3.0): Trey. Big Red has still got it folks, and this show is extremely solid proof. The kind of dark, wacky, dissonant stuff he has been doing lately is very reminiscent of '96 and earlier, and I love it. I have always thought that Phish’s decline began in the Fall of 1997 (::dodges bullets::), and it is so great to hear the fun come back to their playing. Up until now, Trey was the only one holding it back, and now that he is into it 100% again, the sky is the limit!

^Amen, nice post. Especially about the purposeful dissonance.

This was one of my favorite parts of the show, especially being there and feeling the energy. I knew from Mellow Mood and on that we were going to get a great show. Eric even leaned over and said, “They only play Marley at the goooooood shows!” Something about all the reggae made me think Trey was stoned. Then when they started that Makisupa I had the same thought, especially into the Gregory Issacs tune.

I talked to my best friend/tour buddy yesterday whilst stuck in Charlotte at the airport and talked about that. We joked about them having those band burn down sessions again. I say if Trey can smoke and keep it to just that. Hell, by all means if they can continue to play shows like this, Burn down, Trey!!!

^ I agree about Trey smoking. None of us knows whether or not he has the true “addict” personality type. The thing is, rehab counselors tell EVERYONE that comes in there that they are an addict and if they do ANY drugs EVER again they will automatically relapse into heroin addiction in the gutter. That’s complete and utter bullshit, and if you have a strong mind, you can easily smoke pot and not do heroin any more. I mean, shit, I’ve had my run-ins with bad drugs, and I quit doing them, and I smoke all the time. Being high does NOT make me want to go get some cocaine. So hopefully Trey has got it all figured out. I’m sure he does; the guy is a fucking genius.

EDIT: HOWEVER, I don’t think that pot-smoking has caused these incredible shows. I think lots and lots of practice combined with the fact that they have been back for a while now and are really finding their groove again are the reasons for this incredible tour. As long as they keep it together, and the mission stays clear, they will only get better. I see a serious new peak in the career of Phish coming, and I don’t think cannabis is to be thanked for it. I think it’s great musicianship.

Well said! I honestly think now that they are finally getting comfortable and shaking off all the nerves because nobody cares more about the fans and what the fans think than those 4 guys on stage. Plus, Trey is a little bit of a perfectionist. Now, they are getting into that groove again where they can absolutely have a blast, but practice and make everything better! In 2.0 we never saw that. All this practice and fun and gratefulness is morphing into greatness, and this 3.0 sounds a lot like 1.0 except maybe even better! So, if Trey wants to “smoke another nug”? Let him! He deserves it!

Thoughts on first listen:

Light - Nice rhythmic type II jam.
Mikes - Solid. Nice clav work at the beginning.
Simple - Brief but substantive jam melts into Makisupa.
Night Nurse - Well done.
Ghost - Pretty straight forward until the end. Trey introduces a HYHU line that slowly morphs into Mango. Beautiful segue.
Mango - Great jam with Trey strumming the Weekapaug style chords and Page raging on the piano. Unfortunate the rest of the band resisted what could have been another crazy segue. Instead, Mango winds down and they jump into Weekapaug from a quick-stop.
Weekapaug - Jam gets off to a good start. I think the Ghost, Night Nurse, and Llama lyrics kind of throw things off a bit. I would rather they have gone all instrumental through the themes. But, but it did sound like fun and I’m sure it fit the moment, just not great on playback.

Worth a listen for the Ghost>Mango alone.

place went crazy after this line, it was great

I’ve really been a hater of many 3.0 Mike’s but this one is an exception. Tight, locked in, and focused. Especially Trey, but everyone shines here.

I love this show. Probably the best of the tour in my mind. However i will have to disagree about that comment on Mike’s. Pretty much all 3.0 Mike’s have been the same, but pretty much every one includes great playing from all. In early 09 Mike’s contained some of Trey’s best playing.

But yeah back to the show. This whole show is great. First set looks like all the band members threw a bunch of songs into a hat that they rarely play and just picked em out, and there ya go. First After Midnight since Cypress possibly 2nd ever? And it smokes too. Great playing by all the members. Always great to see the Sloth show itself, good version too. Alumni > LTJP > Alumni smokes as well, and is easily better than the Camden version. Then who can disagree with a little Reggae? Nice Mellow Mood, and Access Me. I really liked the little jam they did in Access me even though the lyrics were kinda botched. Then finally another Llama for 2010, and easily the best of 3.0. Man i love Llama. All of these Dreams is a nice little breather too. Great Curtain with > SOAMule. Then an unexpected but welcome ending trio to close the first. A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing, It’s Ice > Walls of the Cave. Great It’s Ice too. Nice n tight.
Set 2 is where its at though nice Possum to start it off > easily my favorite Light ever. I mean cmon, a full on Manteca Jam is always welcome for me. In fact i have eagerly awaited the bust out of this tune more than many others. Then an amazing Mike’s groove with Simple > Makisupa Policeman -> Night Nurse -> Makisupa Policeman > The Wedge, Ghost -> The Mango Song all sandwiched in. Nice Simple, nothing groundbreaking but good interplay throughout. Really love Trey’s sweet soloing on this tune. Makisupa w/ Night Nurse FTW!!! Love this combo and hope to see this tune pop up more. The Wedge! Man this show is spontaneous. Great Ghost with a pretty smooth Segue into Mango, although i still prefer the DC Meatstick -> Mango segue, but this one is still great and the Ghost smokes. Slightly Shaky out of Mango > Weekapaug, but they easily made up for it with all the unexpected lyrics and teases throughout. Then, wait what? Back into Llama out of nowhere! With lyrics. Wow what a great show. They earned that stand alone Show of Life encore. I personally like the song and prefer over many other options as far as slow songs go. But yeah great show! My favorite from the tour and possibly 3.0.

^Nice review man! You really can’t argue with this show. I’ll have to re-listen to that Light. Don’t remember it striking me as best ever, but I dunno, maybe it did.

I wouldn’t call it best ever either. It’s still a pretty good one though. My favorite piece of improv has to be Weekapaug though. I like the band’s recent playfulness with Weekapaug segues. Interesting stuff starting in Mango too. The Weekapaug riff in place of the Mango chords creates an excited kind of tension against Page’s awesome solo.

Augusta > Greek > Manchester > MSG

You know that place that Augusta’s gets to late, like around 12-13 minutes… That’s why I listen to Phish.

I didn’t say this was the best Light ever. It’s personally my favorite version, mainly for the Manteca jam. I’m a sucker for that song/theme. Also i can think of a few Lights i would take over MSG, and i was there.
