yeah apperently that one didnt count…hmmm will this one?? ha!
While I’ll take this show and put it in the solid effort category, it felt a little up and down.
From My Soul through Ocelot the band seemed a little off to me. After Page represented strong in My Soul, Trey did very little with it and the start of the show seemed a tad awkward. ACDC didnt quite get there either and when the band chose Ocelot I felt it a good choice to stretch their legs and find each other. But again it didnt quite happen. It felt to me like Mike and Trey were having some problems hooking up.
But in what many deem a throwaway the band definitely found their sweet spot. Sample is a song that hasnt really been too relevant since 94. But Ive felt progress every time Ive heard them play it since Hampton and on this night, I felt it saved the set if not the show. A clear 1st set highlight (dont laugh, give the jam a listen) that made way to a weekend highlight in LUOLMA! This jam went to some really funky places.
But then things seemed to dip a bit thereafter until Axilla which got the room pumping and got the band hooked up for the rest of the first set. The Cities in this set while not on par with the Berkely Cities had some text book grooving going on as Kuroda played with the house lights. Fun little dance party that made way for a solid Moma and a ripping 46days.
Set two had its peaks and Valleys too. PYITE>Sand>Carini was alot of fun and the Carini went from heavy , to dark, to funky so effortlessly that by the jamming in Carini I felt like the 1st set miscues were long gone. Leave it to Caspian to prove me wrong. This was the lull in the show. Not just because Im not a big fan of the song. It wasnt even very well played and they happened upon it very awkwardly. And yes I know Corrina is a great tune and a bust out. But it did little to re-inject energy back into the set. Piper didnt do much better either to be honest. I realize the boys know alot better than I do, but I really hope they go back to the slow intros at some point with Piper. But when it made way for Theme the set got back on track and didnt falter again. Great jamming in theme and Slave only to be outdone by a sick Fluff, ending this show on a very, very high note.
Plenty of highlights here, don’t get me wrong. Sample, LUOLMA, Axilla>Rift, Cities>Moma>46Days in the first set. Sand>Carini, Theme, Slave>Fluff second set. I took it and left happy. But leaving the venue I felt the best playing of the weekend was definitely ahead of us.
1st day AC was so good I thought there might be a problem for 2nd day. BOY was I wrong. Anything but VANILLA.
I love this run!!!
Just finished giving set I a re-listen and I liked it just now as much as I did watching them play it. The Star Spangled Banner was a cool opener after seeing all the weird stuff on the TV about the airport scare or whatever was going down. I haven’t seen My Soul in 3.0 so that was cool, but musically the My Soul through Sample just wasn’t quite doing it for me. Then came Light Up. On top of being one of my all-time favorite tunes, I thought they brought some great energy to this jam and I love every second of it. I always enjoy Sugar Shack (apparently most do not?). Also my first Timber Ho! since 2004 and as this has been a long standing favorite Phish cover of mine I was pumped. I love the jam (with it’s awesome beat built on that tom roll and dark bass groove) and this one was really really cool, but I wish they would have kept it going. Axilla>Rift had the place jumping like fucking mad which was awesome and I thought the Moma>Cities>46 Days was a great way to end the set…some funk, more funk with a short funky jam, into melt your face rock and roll. Thought it was a great way to start the weekend and parts of this set will be frequented on my iTunes.
Finished listening to the second set earlier. PYITE opener…ok. The Sand doesn’t really go anywhere for the first 10 min, then when it’s gets somewhere sweet Trey cuts it short by starting Carini…lame. The jam between Carini and Caspian is awesome, but again Caspian doesn’t really go anywhere. I usually like Caspian and I LOVE the versions from this year so I was kind of disappointed in this one. Then Corrina, which is a beautiful song and contained even more beautiful solos by Trey and Page. Especially Page’s solo on the Fender Rhodes. I felt at the time that nobody else in the venue was really into it that much but me so it felt like they were playing it just for me
. The Piper is pretty good, but the Theme was rocking. The highlight of the second set though is the Slave>Fluffhead. The jam in Slave is beautiful and Trey nicely builds this one up to a screaming climax…then he nails the guitar solo at the end perfectly.
In hindsight the second set probably isn’t as good as I remember it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it while I was there and that’s the most important thing. The first set is probably more worth checking out, but I would recommend listening to the Slave>Fluffhead.
Oh man Page on the Rhodes. Corrina blew me away, and sitting in the first row I felt a lot of appreciation from the band mouthing every lyric. So beautiful. Axilla is the best version I’ve heard in 3.0, just listen to trey screaming “YEAHH” and you’ll understand. The interplay between the band with Moma->Cities was really nice.
Trey gestured a “punch” berfore PYITE after a few licks which was fun to see. As Doug mentioned the Slave>Fluff was excellent. They really relished in the crowd after Fluff and it seemed apparent that something special had just happened. Oh happy times.
Was actually coming in here to post about that Fluff. The best in many a year by so far. Played with so much energy and such great interplay. Especially Mike and Page.
This one’s got probably the best first set I’ve seen yet. The Moma>Cities>46 Days to close it was insane. You got your standard Moma funk followed by a spacey Cities jam followed by a screaming version of 46 Days. Not bad at all if I may say so. The Axilla>Rift that preceded it was pretty awesome, too. Carini was one of the jam highlights of the night for me. The Fluffhead closer was unbelievable. Some of the greatest energy I’ve ever seen. Was my first Fluff too, and 16 of the other songs played were first-timers too. I feel like I should do a full-show review… but not right now.
listening to this again, the section of the Sand jam the last couple minutes before Trey goes into Carini sound like a Cool It Down (Velvet Underground) jam to me…
anyone else agree?

Dude that Tweezer? Maaaaannnnn…
^ true. that Tweezer beats out anything from 10/29 and maybe the rest of the AC run. I think that my view is probably really biased (especially with regard to the setlists). Upon further listening to 12/30, I could see why it would be viewed as a superior show (somewhat tighter, more straightforward setlist. I still might have to go with AC 1. Both had two of my very favorite first sets. However, the Moma>Cities>46 and Light Up edge 10/29 I to be superior. Both are excellent shows in their own right, though. Corrina was also one of my favorite slow song moments at a show, too. (Then again, so was MSG’s Driver)
But seriously, if you check out anything from this show check out the first set closer trio, Carini and Fluffhead.
I guess Fishman really impressed me the most because he was just keeping the rhythms humming so effortlessly.
I might have to agree with this. It was quite a Fishman-oriented show in some ways.
I enjoyed gettin bill and his wife high during this show ![]()
yeah and we’re just comin down…
Downloaded this and a bunch of shows this past weekend, and spent the earlier part of this week listening to this show for the first time since being there. I remember distinctly really liking this show, especially the first set.
After hearing it once, and then the first set of the following night, 10/30, I’m not as much sold on it. 10/30 buries 10/29, first set to first set anyway. Listening to the Wolfmans at the moment, and everything up to and including this song have been tremendous, high energy and fun.
