Notes: Breaking with tradition, Phish donned a musical costume “from the future,” a yet to be recorded album that will apparently be entitled, Wingsuit. All of the songs in the second set were debuts other than Winterqueen, which was played by TAB on October 1, 2011. Monica, Snow and Amidst the Peals of Laughter were all performed acoustic, and Amidst the Peals of Laughter was performed as a Page and Trey duet. Wombat featured the dance stylings of Abe Vigoda and the Abe Vigoda Dancers. Antelope also featured alternate lyrics referencing the Abe Vigoda Dancers. This show was officially webcast via LivePhish.com.

Bathrooms jammed up during that second set or what?

Bring on the new material Phish, it’s about time.

I don’t know how many times I said, “Imagine if they debut their new album?”, just kinda hoping.

My favorites are Fuego & Wombat. Biggest contender for a rewrite: Snow. Just change the key at least!

Okay let the bitching commence.

Fuego, Monica, Wombat, 555 should all see playing time to perfect and jam out…

It was “different” to see/hear them play new stuff for that set, but it is what we want, right? Unpredictable band that is moving forward, so I am happy!

Haven’t heard any of it, but from first look, I think it’s kinda disapointing that this is what they did for their “costume”.
I think it would have been better if they surprised everyone with a 3 set show on some random date and did this.
But hey, it’s Phish and they are known for the unkown. So whatever, it’s cool with me.

What’s the general consensus with how the songs sound?

I all honesty, I’m more bummed to find out that they haven’t even begun to record the album yet. Just a longer wait for some new studio Phish. Bummer…

Some of these new tunes are winners. Standouts being Fuego, Wombat, and 555. I’ll have to relisten with the names handy to recall the others better.

The third set was jamfully blissful.

Peals of Laughter did it for me for some reason.

Yes, but the glass is half full. You can now download official live versions of 12 brand new Phish songs. One of the most amazing holdovers a band has ever given their fans.

If it weren’t for the expectation of the covers album, everyone would be a lot happier about how cool this really is … it’s too bad they didn’t save this for set one of tonight, and then do Gamehenge Saturday set one. Just because folks would be more accepting, I think, had they delivered the covers album first.

I had a blast. Once I wrapped my head around the idea I gave In and just let the music drive me. I already like it more than Joy. Once it was over it was over. Third set opened up all the tight asses that balloon knotted during the second!

The Carini was good…

I think a lot of these songs offer great potential for -> into them, since they start off groove based. Time will tell.

I wonder how divided the fan base really is on the Halloween set.

After debating it in chat with a few guys this morning, I realize there’s a point there, that maybe the band should have delivered the cover-of-an-album thing, and then saved Wingsuit for another night maybe.

Still, even considering that, I think it’s too awesome and singular of an event to really wage a complaint against it.

Then again, this is coming from a guy who is exponentially more interested in their writing output than the average fan.

I waited almost twenty years to see them cover another band’s album front to back. Was in the third ‘row’ and all that means, because i always considered the covers to be a feat of musicality and I wanted to be right there to watch them pull it off. Now, I sure hope the covers aren’t over with, but I also have to say that to me the second set wasn’t a disappointment at all. Once the Phishbill came out there was sort of a confused lull and everybody pretty much just re-tooled for a different kind of night. One cool thing was that the suspense lasted through the end of the second set, instead of just until the Phishbill came out. That was fun. Tossing a gag into the mix was fun too. More than that though, I thought it was a cool experience to be in the middle of a huge number of first listeners trying to groove this way or that at a moment’s notice without foreknowledge of the direction. I thought it was a nice moment for the band too because we did seem to like it… They were a little nervous/anxious about it too I guess. Seemed pleased and relieved that what was created and given was accepted well and didn’t fall flat. Maybe that’s why they went with the Abe Vigoda insurance policy. Can’t go wrong with Abe…

victory

I wish I would have been there for it…

My only complaints about this show are the Heavy Things opener and Quinn The Eskimo encore.

As far as the 2nd set:

I will have to listen again but the set of new material I heard on the simulcast was pretty impressive. While guessing the album for Halloween is one of my favortie Phish activities, it was far more rewarding for me (and my friend I was watching with) to see Phish take a step forward like this.

Love the direction they are going in with their music and can’t wait for this album. Lots of interesting vocal play, deep funk, and proggy instrumental stuff. Like I said, I’ll have to listen again but they made a great first impression on me the other night.

For anybody upset about this, ask yourself this: What if they covered an album by somebody else but it was an album you had never heard and an album that you don’t care for now that you’ve heard it?

This was a great call. Keep it up, Phish.

Gonna rock set III+E on part of my run today. I love listening to new Phish.

I wonder if the peeps who’d have preferred an ABB album or whatever, are the same folks yelling for Freebird in the bars. God help me if I play an original tune in a drinkin’ room. This is Phish here, man. If that mentality had been allowed to dominate, Phish might have stayed a bar band.

At some point I’ll probably organize all of the thoughts I have on the Wingsuit set in a more eloquent fashion, but I have to say…I love it. Most of all, I love hearing the trepidation in the music at the beginning of Wingsuit turn into sheer passion and joy a few mins into the first tune. The whole set just seems to blister with excitement. I can hear it in their voices and in the instruments. While I thought it was awesome when I first heard what they were doing, I wasn’t really disappointed to miss it. But after having given it a couple spins it’s really an experience I would’ve like to have had.

some people really don’t like what they did. and then call anyone who appreciates it an elitist…man…
