Notes: The Old Home Place was performed acoustic. While Mike tuned up for Foreplay/Long Time, Trey talked about the fact that the Bangor Auditorium and Nectar’s are both on Route 2, so the band had been playing on that road for eleven years. This version of Tweezer appears on A Live One.

As I completed the collection of Phish from 1990-present day a few years ago I’ve been going through and listening to all of their shows in chronological order (beginning with 90). While I’ve heard this Tweezer many many times on ALO, listening to this show/Tweezer in context of the tour makes it even more special. Namely because it’s the night after the first Halloween/White Album show. Not to mention they put on one hell of a fucking show on the 29th. But anyway I was listening to the Stash wondering why they didn’t put this version on ALO, but then realized later a few minutes into listening to the Tweezer that it was probably because they put the Tweezer on ALO. Basically what I’m saying is the Stash was definitely worthy of making the cut. Trey is totally fired up during the While My Guitar Gently Weeps solo too and is still feeling the vibe from two nights ago.

But back to the Tweezer…it is quite amazing. Over the years I’ve forgotten how special this jam really was. Not just to listen to but for what it was when it was. I started listening to Phish for the first time toward the end of this very tour and I can remember all of the discussion/arguments during early 95 (when word got out they were selecting material for a live release) on rec.music.phish what should be on it. Anyways throughout the rest of the 90’s 20-30 min type II’d jams became much more common. Up to the Fall of 94 though, they were an extreme rarity. There were a handful of really crazy experimental jams in August 93 and a few in Spring/Summer 94. This Tweezer represented quite the leap of faith that this band has/had with the audience. To take a chance and just step off into the abyss like that takes balls and I admire them for that. Not to mention the jam fucking rocks. ALO came out a few months after I started listening to them and it’s no wonder I fell so hard in love with this band so fast.
