E: Smells Like Teen Spirit##

Only about 4000 in attendance. *Acoustic; dedicated to Wendy and Lisa, two women whom Trey and Mike met the night before. **Acoustic; with a “Freebird ending”, similar to the 07-20-98 “Poor Heart.” Trey dedicated it to the people at the Dead Goat Saloon, and talked about getting free drinks and karoake. He also discussed the band picturing what it would be like if the entire audience were on stage with them, with no one in the audience. So they played it with this image in mind. ^With a tease of the “Monkey Man” (Rolling Stones, from their “Let It Bleed” album). ^Narration was about Jimmy going to Las Vegas and finding it too crowded and crazy (may be related to Trey’s walking off the stage during “Ghost” on Halloween, given his comment on how overwhelmed he had felt, followed by a comment that “everyone has an off night”). So Jimmy decides to hitchhike to Salt Lake City, and he rides with a driver listening to Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” Thus, the section of “Speak to Me” through “Eclipse” is the entirety of that album. #One verse sung twice; another omitted. ##First time played (Nirvana cover).

Top-5 “Tube” right here, folks.

I listen to this show so much, I love it, my copy isn’t of the highest quality.

Tube > Drowned > JJLC is unbelievable!! My favorite part of the show.

^I like the non-Dark Side stuff from this show so much. Such good stuff all the way through.

Smells like teen spirit is not a good song for our favorite band though. They don’t sound too good on that one.

This was the first Phish show I ever heard, back when I was more of a Pink Floyd fan than a Phish fan. I only recently (well, relatively recently) gained the ability to appreciate it for more than the second set. Last year I made a matrix of two of the audience sources, which I’m kind of happy with. I can’t see why this never got a LivePhish release… probably because they used the Pink Floyd CD for the sound effects, and couldn’t get sampling rights or something.

I still think it’s funny how, after playing one of the greatest shows EVER (I think this is in everyone’s top five), they cap it off with the least climactic encore ever. Really, what else would you put there? Would it be the same if they closed with Coil, Slave, or Character Zero? Nothing can top Eclipse > Harpua, so why not a shitty Nirvana cover?

Not in my top-5… probably not in my top-50.

Nina was there and you wish you were there too! I Know I do!

I do, Bryan.

I do.

Not in my top five either. I like the Halloween show much better. I guess having an “off night” can lead to some great music. And IMO the Loaded Set > Dark Side Set.

may not be one of the best ever, but the phishyness factor is through the roof, can’t deny tht

Love this show. Great all the way through sets one and two. I agree with G2K’s comment on Tube. Drowned, JJLC and Moma were also the bees knees. I could listen to Fishman sing the Great Gig in the Sky all day long. Viva Fish!

Maybe not in my Top 5 anymore, but definitely still Top 20 material.

The MOMA is where its at.

Not too long.

Funk me all night long though

This is a show that I love more for the idea than to actually sit down and listen to it (the pink floyd part…the aforementioned jams are beeses kneeses). Probably because I’m not huge into Floyd, and certainly not that big into Dark Side of the Moon. But yes, this is definitely a show I would’ve loved to see for the sheer experience. It’s just pretty fucking ridiculous. A great first set with a couple awesome jams, a monster DWD second set opener followed by Mango, the best Moma of 98, YEM, HARPUA and then ‘oh hey let’s play another band’s entire album we learned today just because we’re smart asses and lots of people skipped this show’ ->Harpua. You can’t make that shit up. I did always find it funny that they just completely butchered such a simple song for the encore after so elegantly learning the entire Dark Side of the Moon on the fly.
