11/2/98 DSOTM: Why no official release?

The infamous post-halloween DSotM show is easily one of Phish’s finest gigs, especially with the killer first two sets taken into account. The Live Phish series made an issue of doing shows with unique things happening in them; from the Halloween sets to an atypical amount of the same song. This begs the question: why did this show never appear as a LivePhish CD or download?

I doubt there’s any copyright issues, as Pink Floyd Management hasn’t denied people the ability to cover DSoTM before (see: Easy Star All-Stars, Dream Theatre). It was certainly recorded, as Time showed up during one of the Coventry broadcasts.
What could be the problem? Is it the direct sampling of the album sound effects getting in the way (also doubtful, as PF has allowed sampling before), some horrible flaw obscuring most of the recording, or just a huge oversight?

Maybe it’s that the recording that currently circulates, at least the one I have, is pretty damn good and it circulates very widely as it is. I think one day down the line this show will be released, but my AUD will definately hold me over in the mean time.

A fun show, but not the tightest played. Which is understandable.

The first set opener is sooooooooooo good. By far the best part of the show, IMO.

Great encore too! [/sarcasm]

I’ll second that.

The “Tube, Tube Jam -> Drowned -> Jesus Just Left Chicago” is better than anything played on 10/31 with the exception of “Sweet Jane” and “Rock and Roll.”

Why everyone gets so geeked about official releases escapes me! Sure for non circulating shows i understand but not these shows that almost everyone has or has access to!

Well, a nice soundboard would be a notable upgrade; the two sources of the show I know of are both imperfect AUDs, one being a bit distant and trebley and the other being too upfront and bassy.

(I can’t believe I’m up here whining about a perfectly listenable pair of AUDs when I’m just done listening to The Beatles Live At The Star Club. Good old 1962 consumer portable recording at it’s most overpriced.)

Hey, now that I think of it, a matrix might be nice…

A Matrix of what sources?
a

The two I named (and, I think, the only two for the gig); the FOB bassy source (Newmann) and the more common Schoeps source.

Although before I talk I might need to check out the AKG480 source; I only just noticed it existed.

i’d be fine w/ that show, but i still want more fall 97

^yup.

id could pick a lot of shows id want released before i thought of this one.

Maybe it will appear ophishally in time…

Why no Roxy '93? Why no UIC '94? Why nothing from Europe '97 I or II? Why nothing from summer '97? Clifford Ball? Great Went? BIG CYPRESS? Hampton '97? Philly '97? Worcester '97? Auburn Hills '97? Vegas '96? Vegas '97? Where’s VA Beach '98? Stuff from NYE run '93, '96, '98? I think you get my point… you’re going to have to ask whoever decides what to release. I’d say all of the shows above minus VA Beach, Vegas '96, & some NYE stuff are better than that one. There are lots of really good shows that haven’t been released yet… MORE PHALL '97!!!

It is coming.

Oh is it? That would definitely qualify for unique…
