11.2.98

Down with Disease, The Mango Song, The Moma Dance^, You Enjoy Myself, Harpua^^ > (Speak to Me, Breathe, On the Run, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Money, Us and Them, Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage, Eclipse) > Harpua#

Only about 4000 in attendance. *Acoustic; dedicated to Wendy and Lisa, two women whom Trey and Mike met the night before. **Acoustic; with a “Freebird ending”, similar to the 07-20-98 “Poor Heart.” Trey dedicated it to the people at the Dead Goat Saloon, and talked about getting free drinks and karoake. He also discussed the band picturing what it would be like if the entire audience were on stage with them, with no one in the audience. So they played it with this image in mind. ^With a tease of the “Monkey Man” (Rolling Stones, from their “Let It Bleed” album). ^Narration was about Jimmy going to Las Vegas and finding it too crowded and crazy (may be related to Trey’s walking off the stage during “Ghost” on Halloween, given his comment on how overwhelmed he had felt, followed by a comment that “everyone has an off night”). So Jimmy decides to hitchhike to Salt Lake City, and he rides with a driver listening to Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” Thus, the section of “Speak to Me” through “Eclipse” is the entirety of that album. #One verse sung twice; another omitted. ##First time played (Nirvanan_)

Phish will always be my personal favorite band, but…

Pink Floyd is probably the best band ever.

That setlist is incomplete!

If anyone is wondering, I was rip-roarin’ drunk when I posted this last night, so that might explain the pointlessness of this thread.

I was listening to 11.2.98 Set 2 and suddenly had the urge to declare Pink Floyd as the best band ever.

my apologies

Why is your name phish loser??

somebody called me that recently and I thought it was funny.

I have been listening to this in my car for a few days. After that opening trio which I LOVE, that set just takes a nose dive for me. Limb by Limb is the only song at the end I really care for, and it can not carry a set for me.

The second set starts off really nice, I really like the short but sweet DWD. And then of course the Pink Floyd magic, which adds to Phishs mystique, but wasn’t too solid musically.

Then quite possibly the worst encore ever.

So all in all… This is one of the most overrated shows in my eyes.

That is what I was trying to get across with my “part of Phishs mystique”.

I guess it didn’t come across too well.

oh yeah, the first set is definitely forgettable after the first three songs.

But, I really enjoy this YEM for some reason, and the Harpua->DSOTM->Harpua is special, even if its a little sloppy.

the “worst encore ever” comment seemed a little exaggerated at first, but I guess I can’t argue with it. I’ve always kind of looked at it as a joke encore. Almost like “jesus, what can we do for an encore that won’t be a let-down after set 2? Let’s just fuck around.” But I agree its pretty terrible musically.

The show definitely is overrated, but its still fun to bust out every so often.

This “Tube” is fucking incredible. And I love the “YEM” too.

I for one LOVE the first set. It has the best opening trio I’ve ever heard, with that 20 minute Drowned being teh crown jewel of '98 in my opinion. I agree the acoustic stuff maybe is a bit of a letdown, but it was a half full house, so they were just trying to make it a little more intimate for the fans, and I think that really comes across in the recording. The Limb x Limb is definately my favorite version from '98 (ever?), and the Wading is just heart wrenching. The Wading just makes Sample sound extra rocking too, and a good end to an AMAZING set.

I shouldn’t at all have to argue the merits of the second set. The DWD, YEM and Moma Dance (with Monkey Man teases) stand up great against any versions of those songs ever. Mango Song is a treat, but I think it is quite forgettable in the grand scheme of things. The Harpua is short, but with damn good reason.

This is definately one of my Top 5 favorite/most listened to shows. I just don’t understand how a stunning show like this could ever be considered overrated.

I guess because it is generally agreed that this is the Worst Encore Ever.

BTW I listened to this last night with Erin. It was actually her pick and I couldn’t have been happier about it. It is just a captavating show from start to finish. There is no point where I start zoning out and think about some other show that I’d rather be listening to. This show has it all.

I can think of worse encores. Friday comes to mind.

Yeah, maybe as an encore. but at 6/26/04, my last Phish show Saturday at Alpine, the “Friday” was just perfect.

Why isn’t it Friday today = why can’t we go back in time and do this all over again.

I thought Friday was one of their better slow songs. I’ll take Friday over Contact anyday of the week.

KB

OK.

I’ve only listened to 11/2/98 a few times, but it’s the sort of show that’s more impressive than it is good to listen to. By that I mean, “holy shit they covered Dark Side of the Moon a few days after covering Loaded!!” But sadly, the reality is not that amazing. It’s not played BADLY, but it’s not super tight or all that interesting. And the encore is pretty weak, too. No other band could do what they did, and 11/2 is a must hear show if only to be impressed how much they were willing to do to still test themselves and impress the fans…but it’s not going to make any “best of” show lists.

Secret Smile. ;D

you need to listen to it more.

Can someone give me the low down of this show? Story behind it?

Were they going to cover it on Halloween and decided not to, and then no one showed up to this show and they decided to fuck with everyone who didn’t buy tickets?

Friday can suck my left nizzut. Only someone with the name “KB” would post that.

That’s not Kind, Bud.

I know what happened…but I’m not telling.

Okay, I’ll give you a hint.

And they sent us along as a surrogate band
We’re gonna find out where you folks really stand.

That’s from The Wall, though.

p.s. I have since listened to this show and like it a lot.

^^^Perhaps those are his initials? But the low down on 11-2-98 is the same as the low down at any Phish show. They are Phish and things like 11-2-98 are Phishlike! The smells encore did come from the fact that Nevermind was the most widely circulated rumor for the Halloween album.
