*With extended jam, with a Trey/Page duet (fooling around with tempo). *“No Grand Pa” instead of “No Good Pa” and “Play it Leo for Grandpoodie,” said Trey. Supposedly Phish had had a party with family members (including Trey’s grandpa and father) this day, to celebrate “Slip Stitch and Pass” going gold.

This show is so radical. I think this two-night Spectrum stand is my favorite of this tour. Just so loose and yet tight at the same time. No complaints about a Buried Alive opener, especially with a scorching DWD to follow. A nice mid-first-set Ghost and the only Divided Sky of the tour and then a Taste with stupendously soaring guitar work from big red.

The second set oozes funk. The Mike’s->Simple might be my favorite of this tour and the Dog Funk Boy is fucking awesome. Then they somehow squeeze Ya Mar in there before rounding out the groove with Weekapaug. That’s pretty much the end of the show, though the Character Zero is a rager if you’re into that kind of thing.

^Concur, totally.

These shows do standout, even now. I have it (and most of my Phish music) on three CDs, the second one containing the five songs of the Mike’s Groove. It’s one of those unique CDs out of all that I have, that I almost ‘have to’ listen to several times a year, no matter what.

And that may be totally personal because there were so many ‘firsts’ that happened at this, my second show (can you imagine my luck, my first show was the Bozos on the Bus Kesey thing in Darien Lakes in August that year, and then 12/2&3 as my second and third shows). But I also brought my two eldest daughters and their fiances to this show, and it was the first time I ever ‘partied’ with them in the lot before the show.

And although they never asked to attend another Phish show with me, it was a majorly important event in our relationships as it helped break down the ‘authoritarian mystique’ of myself as their ‘parent’. For all the time before that lot scene, the kids never saw either Marie or I even slightly high from anything, nor did we really have the disposable resources to spend on music or concerts, or anything that was individually personal in that way.

So besides a Phish show of note, this night was a ‘coming out party’ for me with my adult children. Roni was a year away from getting married, and Jen already had Olivia two years earlier, so we were three people experiencing radical changes in their lives together, children becoming parents, parents becoming children again. Damn intense time, and the music rose to the occasion.

Have a long drive down to work this morning. Think it’s time to listen to this once again. Thanks Dougster for reminding me.
