12-31-96 Appreciation

My gawd, you’re slightly younger than I am and you were seeing shows in 1996. That’s amazing. I can’t even imagine being that young and being around the Phish scene. I was 18 1/2 at my first show and I couldn’t stop staring at all the people around me.

Personally, I feel that this is the weakest night of the run and one of the weakest NYE shows.
Page has said that his voice was getting more shot with each show and it’s clearly audible on Bohemian Rhapsody.

I recorded that show off the radio, and this was during the period where I was losing interest in their direction … I have only heard the show a couple times. I remember being disappointed in two things, mainly.

First - it was very album-song heavy. At that time it was harder to collect all their songs, since obtaining live recordings wasn’t what it is today. So I was like, “I have all these songs!”

Secondly I remember feeling they could have done a better job on Bohemian Rhapsody … that was disappointing.

But, I will give it another spin. Ten years can change a man.

fine. worst show ever. i get it.

Yeah, there’s not much you could do after NYE '95.

hahaha!

I’m sure the show is fine, man … I was saying in my post that I believe I was actually biased against the show. I’m positive I’ll enjoy it more this time around, simply because I don’t mind lots of album songs anymore, and because my perspective in general has changed so much since then.

^^I know!!! My parents wouldn’t let me go to that one. Missed it by a fuckin yeaR!!!

^Yah, i gotcha mang

12-31-96 was my least favorite new years attended, aside from 12-31-02. it was also the weakest show of the new years run imo. i enjoyed set 1, but the rest of the show went down hill from there. however, i thought disease, suzy and antelope had solid jams, especially antelope!

I agree with the “Disease.” It foreshadowed what was to come in '97 in terms of the direction their music was taking!

yah, i agree with it being the weakest of the run.

Lookin back now i can definatly agree this show left alot to be desired. But like Brett it was my first and that night i may have been the least critical iv’e ever been at a show. It seemed all i was keying in on that night were things that made me smile. The performance may have not been all there but the energy sure was! We had great seats and great molly that night. Everything was perfect in my eyes and the great things that happened that night (like the Michael jackson tease in Punch, the Tweeprise to finsh the night before’s Tweez, Probably my favorite Customer Hero and the 3rd set was tip top IMO) set me straight until Virginia!

That Antelope raged…that’s all I remember from the one time I listened to this show.

Oh yeah, The Balloons man The Balloons were crazy. You could not see through all those balloons. All the popping was like a 5th instrument during DWD!

Great Suzy…

Possibly my favorite.

the F-M recording of this show is crystal clear from what I remember.

But the only two things that stand out from this show for me are the Disease and the crowd’s roar when “Peaches” started.

Haven’t heard it in a while though. Both the spectrum shows preceding it are killer.

FYP.
