show me a better moma dance than the one from worcester. id love to hear it. this one absolutely rips from start to end.
the fact that they played 1 solo project song for each member showed how much they respected each other’s music outside of the band and also showed that they could learn and play these songs together as if they were phish songs. to me, this show truely began their post-hiatus career.
the fact that they released 2.28 over 2.26 on cd means nothing. why would i pay $5 more to have a cd case and 1 page artwork when i could get any post-hiatus show off of livephish.com? personally, i never understood why they released 2.28. 7.15 and 7.29 in cd form. it just seemed like way to make more money.
That’s all it was really. They were the most talked about post hiatus shows, partly due to the fact that they each had good/great setlists.
Does anyone have the article where Mike names Worcester as his favorite from that tour? I really can’t think of a better Moma Dance, 6-24-00 comes close.
I have the Island tour Maze in now. From the Mazes I have heard this and New Years 95 make the top two for me. I am never sure which I like more though. It’s one of my favoriet songs though I need to get some more good versions.
I need to hear 2/26/03. Been strongly considering a download after you folks talked it up so much!
Anywho, I was listening to this show again the other day, and that Bowie is seriously great. I honestly think it’s better than the IT version.
hey greg. i purchased the worcester show a long time ago, prob right after it was made available. then livephish restructured their downloading to limit it to one per purchase, but they then reupped my worcester download along with 2/21 from that tour. let me make sure i still have it on my computer then its all yours.
^ agreed, 2/26/03 is solid all-around. i will say it’s the best Maze post-hiatus with confidence (not even close to all-time though), and the stash is up there for the same honor.
^my thing against 2/26/03 is all the solo bull shit stuff they trhow in there (ie clone, drifting, blue skies, final flight) all in the first set that just kinda kills the vibe set from the YEM opener. nevertheless, the moma is uber funky, the maze truly is SEEECK, and i guess the low rider.
I think the overrated tag comes from the fact that so many fans (and I’m not generalizing about new or old fans here) declared 2/28/03 one of the best shows ever shortly after it had been played. You’ve gotta give these things some time to sink in and be contextualized. It’s the same reason while I love all the newer ‘underground/indie/whatever’ music that I listen to, I often stop myself from declaring it some of the best music ever because I think they need time and context to really show themselves to be lasting, important accomplishments.
All that said, it’s been 4 and a half years since this show was played and I have no qualms about saying it’s one of my favorite shows ever. Certainly for post hiatus it’s up there with 2/26/03 and the SPAC '04 run.
I second Greg’s notion. We all know that phish’s peak was in the 90’s, and a great deal of phish heads tend to bitch about anything after the hiatus, but that doesn’t mean some show’s after the hiatus aren’t laudable, and this one is.
