2003-02-28 is overrated

;D

I think everyone has said valuble things about this show. Sure it is overrated a little. But the reason it is overrated is due to the sheer fact that it was known as the Destiny breakout show. So many people were attracted by hearing that, and once you listen to the show you get a solid Bathtub, a great Train, amazing Tweezer, and I agree with whoever posted earlier about the Bowie, this is a great version (although IT is my favorite post-hiatus version so far).

So yes, this show is overrated, but you can’t take away from the playing the boys brought to encompass the breakout of Destiny.

i will certainly agree with this. i prefer fall '97 to summer '98, but i prefer summer '98 to summer '97.

i always regarded the 2/28 horn as the most perfectly played horn I’ve ever heard live

I was at both 2/28 and 2/26. My first show was 10/30/92. I thought the 2nd set from worcester was pretty much forgetful. Caspian needed to be completely abandoned because it went nowhere. The Moma Dance was fair. Yem> clone was great as was Drifting and Final Flight but that was all I took from that show. Nassau just had a lot more bigger tunes. Walls was a great set closer. Back on the Train was their best ever version and Tweezer, Bowie, and Hood were all above average versions. And the encore was tremendous. I really don’t think it’s close between the 2. The band released the cd from 2/28 not 2/26, why do you suppose that is?

I’m also leaning toward agreeing with the orginal premise. The Destiny Unbound, which wasn’t played very well, and the Tweezer which was played very well, tend to skew everyone’s perception of the show, especially if you’re only experiencing it from the recordings.

The Gin was good, the GBOTT was also, the Bowie decent. The show on whole was good, but not stellar musically.

But the experience of being there was too unbelievable to describe.

I like this show. I’ve heard it a few times at friends places, and it is a good one. I love the encore as many people have already stated. Post hiatus phish is not my favorite era, that would be 94 phish, but I still love this show. Parts of it are weak but it is overall a last gasp during the post hiatus shows.

What is flubbed about the destiny? I’ve only heard an early version once before, but I thought they re-created it fantastically after so many years. Once again, I think the quality of the recording might aid my high opinion of the show, but what is wrong with this destiny?

^yeah, what is wrong with it??? i really like it

I think they left out some section of the song…I don’t remember, I’ve only heard this version.

^^ The Destiny is complete with no omissions! Comparing it with other Destiny’s is pointless. It may have had some flubs but you know what? There were plenty of flubs during the 90’s too.

so maybe I exaggerated a bit. lol

show me a better moma dance than the one from worcester. id love to hear it. this one absolutely rips from start to end.

the fact that they played 1 solo project song for each member showed how much they respected each other’s music outside of the band and also showed that they could learn and play these songs together as if they were phish songs. to me, this show truely began their post-hiatus career.

the fact that they released 2.28 over 2.26 on cd means nothing. why would i pay $5 more to have a cd case and 1 page artwork when i could get any post-hiatus show off of livephish.com? personally, i never understood why they released 2.28. 7.15 and 7.29 in cd form. it just seemed like way to make more money.

That’s all it was really. They were the most talked about post hiatus shows, partly due to the fact that they each had good/great setlists.

Does anyone have the article where Mike names Worcester as his favorite from that tour? I really can’t think of a better Moma Dance, 6-24-00 comes close.

nevermind the moma. how about a better maze?

I haven’t listened to this show in a long while… But are you saying its the best ‘Maze’ ever, or post hiatus??

If you mean ever… I will need to give this another listen. Because thats some big words your swingin’

I have the Island tour Maze in now. From the Mazes I have heard this and New Years 95 make the top two for me. I am never sure which I like more though. It’s one of my favoriet songs though I need to get some more good versions.

^^ 7-20-98. That is a hell of a Maze!

i’ve said it before, and i’ll stand by it now. that maze is seriously scary.
