2008 MLB Thread

Anyone getting tired of my daily Cubs updates yet? Or is anyone reading them at all is the better question?

Well the Cubs lost last night 2-1 to the Reds. Lilly pitched great going 7 strong innings only allowing 2 runs, but the offense couldn’t get it going. It happens from time to time and I’m not going to worry too much about it. Arroyo and the Reds bullpen shut down the Cubs offense. Derosa got the lone RBI increasing his career best RBI total . Let’s get those pesky Reds tomorrow afternoon. Z is on the mound and it would be nice to get him back on track tomorrow.

Brewers beat up on the Astros yesterday afternoon 5-2. Hey what can I say the Brewers are tough and they are the Cubs biggest competition in all of the NL. Gotta tip my cap off to them. I believe the Cubs are the better team, but that’s why they play the games.

Updated standings:
Cubs 77-49
Brewers 5 GB

The Cubs bounced back from last night’s tough loss to win the rubber game 3-2 yesterday afternoon. Carlos Zambrano looked like the pitcher of old shutting down the Reds to just 1 ER over 7 solid innings. He added a HR taboot!! Marmol gave up his first run since the All Star Break in the 8th to Joey Votto on a towering drive onto Sheffield Avenue. Ladies and Gentleman Joey Votto has 15 HRs this year…7 of them are against the Cubs. This guy is a rookie. Damn I hate Cubs killers. Woody closed out the 9th with a 1-2-3 inning and the Cubs win 2 out of 3 from the Reds.

The Brewers were off today so the Cubs add a 1/2 game on their lead. The Cubs open up the Nationals series tomorrow pitting Jason Marquis against John Lannan. Let’s sweep the lowly Nats. It won’t be easy with Marquis on the mound, but maybe that Cubs offense can get back in a groove.

Updated standings:
Cubs 78-49
Brewers 5.5 GB

going to check out the phils v dodgers game, hopefully we will win, and hopefully the mets stop winning, god damn mets

Well it’s officially September. That means it’s assessment time. The Cubs stand at 85-52 still holding off the Brewers who are 4.5 games behind. The Cubs have 26-27 games left in the season and 7 of those are against the Brewers. It’s going to be won on the field and I look forward to the challenge. I honestly think the Cubs and Brewers are headed on a collision course for the NLCS, but we got aways till we get there. Well rosters expand starting today so it will be nice to get some more help in the bullpen. Come on Cubbies.

Wow… CC threw a no hitter and the umps took it away from him… wow just wow.

The official scorer took it away, the umps have nothing to do with hit/error calls. Gyped nonetheless.

Oops, forgot what I came in here for. My old office got me tickets to saturday’s game vs. the ChiSox. I hadn’t been to Fenway in 3 years, a far cry from my youth when I usually made it at least twice or more. Winning will do that  Nice seats up and to the right from home, though the netting made a foul ball catch not an option. Unless we can sweep the Rays, it’s looking like another Wild Card berth. Go BoSox!

What a game last night. Carlos Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Cubs since 1972 when Milt Pappas accomplished the exact same feat. The game was played in Milwaukee (Wrigley Field North) due to the flooding in Houston from Hurricane Ike. Not only is this amazing this was Zambrano’s first start coming back from rotator cuff soreness. I’d say he’s alright. I’ve been a Cubs fan my whole life and I’m thrilled I was actually able to watch the game as this is the first no-hitter for the Cubs in my life time.

Now let’s keep it going. The magic number is down to 7 for the Cubs. Philly has even actually tied Milwaukee for the wild card lead. It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks.

You’re the Man Carlos!!!

You’re

This White Sox/Twins race is really waring me down. There’s been a bunch of rain outs for both teams, so double-headers have to be played and I’m all confused about who is on top right now, but its damn close.

Next Tuesday–>Thursday is the White Sox/Twins series and that is obviously going to be crucial. Thankfully I’ll be working late those nights so I can’t sit and watch the whole games, or I’d probably have a heart attack. I can still watch bits and pieces though and hear the game on the radio so that’s cool.

Even though I have very little faith in our ability to beat the Red Sox or the Angels in the playoffs, it’d still be great to have the Twins get in and see what happens. And I DO NOT want the fucking White Sox and Ozzie Guillen in the playoffs.

Wearing

But I noticed it too.

yeah I always mess that one up

and I was too lazy to check

Cubs magic number 2!

Man was that game yesterday with the Brewers EPIC!
3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs to tie it up.
Lee with the RBI single in extra innings to win it.
It’s all happening!

Big Z throwing today.
Clinch it today (with a Brewers loss as well) or this weekend.
Shouldn’t be long now.

Also,
I sent this to my boy Fee, but thought I’d share it with you all as well.
Chicago native Eddie Vedder “All the Way” Cubs tribute song.
Pretty cool song for us Cubs fans.

Thanks Eddie!
IT"S GONNA HAPPEN!

I’m happy for Cubs fans, I guess. And I’m looking forward to watching some playoff baseball.

It’d be way more fun if the Twins got in, but things are looking bleak. Tonight we start a 3-gamer with the White Sox, 6 games left, 3 games back in the loss column. A sweep or at least winning 2 of 3 is completely necessary if the last weekend is going to mean anything. (We play KC for 3 games, the White Sox play Cleveland for 3 to end the season) Some of my buddies are pumped, and I’ll of course pay close attention while at work these next few nights, but I"m having a tough time getting excited considering we’ve played sloppy, inconsistent baseball the last 2 months. And now our starting pitching is starting to fall apart.

we’ll see

well, the Twins won Tuesday and Wednesday are now only a half game back of the White Stockings. Two very nice wins.

I’m really nervous for tonight though. I’m almost expecting a let-down. Slowey v. Gavin Floyd. I never know what we’ll get out of Slowey. Even though we’ve come this far, losing tonight puts the division almost completely out of reach, unless the White Sox implode this weekend against Cleveland. On the other hand, if we win tonight, we will control our destiny.

I’m almost glad I work and only will be able to watch bits and pieces of the game, or I might end up pulling my hair out.

^Don’t worry…I’m not sure if the White Sox know what they’ll get from Gavin Floyd either. All i know is that both pitchers routinely destroy the Tigers (who are in last place behind the Royals now…GOOD TIMES!!). I gotta say I’m surprised that the Twins have hung in there since I assumed they’d start to drop off eventually. I like their team though I hate Joe Mauer for no good reason and I can’t stand that cartoon of a stadium that they play in. I don’t know if ESPN will pick up the game but I wish they would (or maybe it’ll be on WGN)…I’ve seen enough Cubs and Mets games to last a lifetime thank you much.

NO ONE HAS POSTED ON THAT EPIC GAME LAST NIGHT???

Seriously, one of the best moments I’ve ever had as a Twins fan (I was 7 when we won our last World Series). And I have had very little faith in this team. Truly unbelievable game.

It could be all for not if we can’t play well this weekend, but we are ridin’ high right now!!

i was actually AT the Dodgers game last saturday night when they whooped the Giants and now i’m still in town for the clinch. Right on.

The best possible final four i can think of would be the Dodgers & Cubs in the NL and the Rays & Angels in the AL.

I’d like to see the Cubs vs. either the Red or White Sox in the World Series.

Cubs vs. Red Sox would get HUGE ratings.

The first round matchup between the Halos and Sawx will be quite interesting.

It’s looking more and more likely that the season is going to get extended due to inclimate weather this weekend in the east coast. Hopefully not as I want to get the postseason started.

Another quick note. Lou has decided to go with Dempster in Game 1. I like the choice. I’m surprised, but I like it. He has been our most consistent pitcher all year and he’s been lights out at Wrigley. Well if Milwaukee wins the wildcard bring on the Dodgers. If the Mets/Phillies get the wild card bring on the team that wins the wildcard.
