2008 MLB Thread

Sniff. I’d argue this but…well…I have nothing to argue. The Twins and Sox are definitely better and the Tigs need to go on a number of big runs to come back. I can’t say they’re out of it, but they’ve got issues. Almost every move they made seemed to backfire. We trade last years Cy Young winner in Jurrjens for Renteria who sucks and will be gone after this year. We sign Jacque Jones who was a disaster and shouldn’t have been signed in the first place since Thames was more than ready to start. I still like the Cabrera trade since we still gave up next to nothing for him but we made it worse by extending Willis’ contract when we had no idea if he’d be able to turn it around. Nice big waste of money there to one should have been a one-year mistake. Cabrera’s still alright…he’s getting better and has single-handedly won a number of games. On the bright side, the pitching has been pretty solid for the most part…at least that’s back on track for now.

As for Hamilton…I’m always wary of these “feel-good” stories if only because I wonder if roids are involved. If something’s too good to be true, then it probably is. Remember that Rick Ankiel thing?..half a year of that and he’s named in the Mitchell Report. Big shocker there. But, hey, if it’s legit, then good for him. Those RBI numbers are ridiculous but, then again, we always knew the Rangers could score. Sadly, they have to score 10 runs to win any game.

I need some R O L A I D S for relief. Last night’s Cubs Brewers show down was a roller coaster ride. Nice win for the good guys. I’m hoping this win really demoralizes the Brew Crew that we got to Sabathia a bit. Well at least more than everyone else has been. It’s going to be a dog fight the rest of the way. 56 games remaining and a 2 game lead. 3 more games left in the series:

Today: Sheets vs. Zambrano…shoudl be a great matchup

Wednesday: Parra vs. Dempster

Thursday: Bush vs. Harden

Hey ESPN there’s other good baseball out there than Yankees Red Sox.

going to see the yanks vs o’s tonight, half day from work woot, first time up at yankee’s stadium

buddy of mine got some free tix’s so myself and a few friends are going to go take it in before they don’t play there anymore

Oh haha, that’s just Manny being…a little bitch. This may turn into a rant so buckle up. His complaint about the Sox not ‘respecting’ (or whatever) player such as Pedro and Nomar is seen purely from a player’s point of view. Being the large money business that it is, the correct decision seems to have been made in both cases. These were not guys making the league minimum for years and then getting offered a junk contract. Pedro was the highest paid pitcher at the signing of his contract. And where are those two now? Pedro broke down as I assume the Sox expected, and Nomar? Well, he was never the same after his wrist injury. Could the Sox have done better with Pedro in '05/'06? Would they have won in '07 if he was on the payroll? I’d say evidence points to doubtful.

Okay, then we’ve got Scott Boras, the scourge of baseball. This guy has created the money grubbing atmostphere that fans should be outraged at. Yes, there’s a ton of money in the game which should get to the players’ pockets. But do we really need to be gouging the fans to do so, especially with the amount of merchandising and TV contracts that inhabit today’s game? Maybe I’m entering ‘curmudgeoney’ but I remember $6 bleacher seats at Fenway. Granted they have the smallest available seating in the league, but now it’s something like $25 just to get in the door, and if actually would like to see some of the action you’ll be shelling out $60+. I think we can safely attribute this to player’s contracts as seating prices went up when we signed both Pedro and Manny. So after the Sox okay the trade, Boras comes back and says Manny will ‘behave’ if the Sox void the two club options and negate the trade. WHAT?!?!?!??!?!??!?! So the player (and his Scrooge-like agent) are trying to hold the team hostage, as the highest paid player on the team? WHAT?!?!?!?!?! The Sox clearly feared that Manny woulkd take off the end of the year, like he already did in 2006. What does that say about his psyche? That he’s a frickin’ child and was ready to take his ball and go home. Much of this was a ploy by Boras to make some more coin, as he was not Manny’s agent when he signed his contract, and thus was not making money off of the club options. But wouldn’t you know, he certainly would get a cut IF Manny got a new contract. Coincidence? I think not.

I loved watching Manny hit for us, as I’m sure Indians fans once did, and am glad that he went to the NL, but W.T.F. is that all about. I couldn’t imagine findind the love for this game as a kid nowadays. All you are really rooting for is laundry (footnote Tony Korheiser I think), and the players rarely live up to the role models that we pretend they should be–I know that’s a whole other argument.

So fans of so-called small market teams will be up in arms saying that they get by without paying these monster contracts. Kudos. Teams that pack 'em in make the money to pay the players, but we’ve gone way beyond any semblance of sanity. My uncle’s an A’s fan from the days of their 3-peat (send check to Phil Jackson). They play competitive ball with a total payroll of that only slightly larger than the 3rd Baseman from the Bronx. The union doesn’t help out at all with their desire to have contracts grow as large as possible. Until marketing sponsors are subsidising contracts directly, the fans are the one’s who fuel this fire. Will the fans ever strike? Doubtful. Is a salary cap the answer? Potentially, but there are a ton of kinks to work out, what with the amount of players in the leauge including farm systems.

So Manny’s a Dodger. Have fun amigo. I hope you have your payday next year with a brand new contract that you’ll try to walk out on once your career nears the end. Have fun not competing for a title again. You say that you love the atmosphere in L.A. and hope to move your family there (but not before a guaranteed contract, because that would cause you too many problems $160m-Man). I guess you’ve just not been paying attention after the 7th inning when the wonderful L.A. fans have left to beat traffic. And you know who hasn’t left? That kid and his family who might be able to afford 1 or 2 games a year and want to savor every moment at the ballpark, because they don’t know when they’ll be back. You know, the real fans.

I just may
have fun watching Bay,
whaddaya say?

Oh yeah, go BoSox!

We could have sort of a half-assed Ewing Theory here. Although not really, because Boston is still pretty good without Manra.

TWINS IN 1st PLACE BIATCHEZZZ!!!

It happened in '04 with Nomar. Will reassess in 3-4 weeks. Need to find a bull for the pen.

Hrbek, wanna buy a vowel?

The Regals tried to give away the game last night, dropping popups and running into each other. Beckett’s held them in check tonight. Is it October yet?

We might since I think people will be underestimating what Manny’s presence did to help Ortiz’s numbers. He’s not going to get half the good pitches he used to get. And Jason Bay is no Manny…not to mention he’s an NL hitter…when a guy goes from the NL to the AL you have to lower his average a bit to account for the NL’s suckiness. Just look at Derek Lowe’s numbers on the Red Sox and on the Dodgers…he hasn’t gotten better, I know that.

Either way, I don’t blame Manny for mocking the Red Sox. These stupid rumors are around EVERY year and it wasn’t until Manny had an expiring contract that the Sawks actually had the balls to deal him. Manny was practically daring them to trade him. Hearing the Sawks tease everyone that they’re trading Manny every year just got tiring, even for me who doesn’t even care.

And, yeah, if you didn’t notice, the Tigers are dead. We’ve got the worst bullpen in baseball. I will not debate this. Farnsworth was a terrible pickup and I knew he would be since he always gives up bad homeruns though Pudge wasn’t coming anyway so it’s not a total disaster. Doesn’t matter…bring on football.

Stevo

Wouldn’t Lowe going to the Dodgers improved his numbers by the AL/Quadruple-A argument? He got older and no longer had a great lineup to back up his mistakes as he did in Beantown.

The Sox put Manny on waivers in '03 and nobody took his contract. The Sox literally could not give him away, due to the contract. They would have taken nobody to not pay him and no one took them up on it.

I actually watched the most of a baseball game I’ve watched in years. Probably almost an hour (spread out). It was Yanks @ Rangers. EA was looking hotter than hell, as usual.

I really, truly do hope the Cubs can do something special this year. I’m not a huge baseball fan, and technically I don’t have a “favorite” team, but I do remember good times from my childhood during the summers when I’d watch day games w/ Harry, Steve Stone, Ryne, Andre, Greg, etc.

Plus my Grandpa was a big Cubs fan and it would be the damnedest thing if they won the World Series in the first full season after he passed.

I think I worded my argument poorly…that’s what i meant right there. His numbers improved due to going to Quadruple-A but he himself didn’t actually get any better.

I’m not sure if the dude was quite as appreciated then as he is now. Yeah he was good but he was really just known as that crazy dude on the Red Sox. I think people have a bigger appreciation for him now. He was just some crazy guy who the media ripped on back then but then he gets two rings and suddenly he’s “one of the best hitters of this generation” and the national media loves him. At least that’s how I perceived it.

Stevo

I think his talent was appreicated then, though probably not his attitude, and again, his contract. He had 7 years of very solid hitting in the Cleve and continued that for 3 years in Boston before the waiver-dump attempt. I wouldn’t say that he’s improved numbers-wise since then, though he has certainly been just about as consistent as a 35 homer, 120 rbi guy. I’d say teams were more worried about a decline in production.

Screw Football…The Cubbies just got to 70 wins on August 8. A truly special year. This team is simply magical and I wouldn’t be surprised if they just take this thing. They are getting contributions from everyone. Starting Pitching is dominant. Relief Pitching has been pretty solid except for Howry. Most runs scored in the NL and biggest run differential in all of baseball. Still along way to go, but I’m stoked.

Alright I’ll probably just end up talking to myself, but I’m going to start chronicling each and every Cubs game from here on out. Just too good of a season and I need to capture this.

Last night the Cubs finished off a 9 game home stand (6-3) by defeating the hated Cardinals 6-2. The Cubs took two of three from three division opponents: Pittsburgh, Houston, and St. Louis.

Dempster was magnificent last night as he pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing only 2 ER. Moving his record on the season to 13-5 (11-2 at Wrigley) St. Louis countered with Cris Carpenter who looked solid in his own right until he had to be pulled in the 6th inning in what is being called a strained triceps. Tough break as he just returned form Tommy John Surgery.

It was a competitive game until the 6th when the Cubbies busted the game open with a 5 spot. This was enabled by a Adam Kennedy error that should’ve been a double play, but the Cubs made 'em pay. “That’s what the good teams do,” says Joe Morgan.

Unfortunately Milwaukee won their fifth straight game as they squared off against the Nationals all weekend. Damn Washington sucks. They play them tomorrow as well. So the standings are:

Cubs- 71-47
Milwaukee 4 gb
St. Louis 7 gb

Don’t worry…you’ll be clamboring for baseball once the playoffs start and the Cubs remember that they’re the Cubs.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be mean but I like when cursed teams continue to be cursed. With the likes of Peyton, Mickelson, Bill Self, the Red sawks and other chokers all winning titles, Sergio Garcia and the Cubs are all we have left.

Stevo

It’s only a matter of time before Sergio gets his.

If the Cubs don’t let him throw out the first pitch, and they end up losing in the playoffs (or…not making it…), then Steve Bartman can show his face in public again.

Say what you will Stevo, but the Cubs are stacked. You and everyone else can make your comments about the 100 year drought and what not, but it comes down to what happens on the field. The Cubs have 4 solid starting pitchers, the 2nd best offense in baseball (second to only Texas) and an above average bullpen.

I admit it’s a new season once you get to the playoffs and anything can happen, but I like throwing Z out there in Game 1, Lilly in Game 2, Harden in Game 3, Dempster in Game 4.
