2008 NFL Offseason Thread

Well I thought about bumping the NFL thread, but with the endless amount of jabbering from Chad Johnson, Mel Kiper Jr., and Todd McShay I figured we needed a thread for the offseason. The NFL is now a 365 day news cycle even though only about 4 months encompass the season.

As far as Chad Johnson goes, I’m sick of hearing about his guy on a daily basis. You have a multi-million dollar contract and unless the Bengals trade you quit talking. Chad is just as selfish as T.O. The media used to “love” Chad’s celebrations. “Chad’s just having fun.” You gotta love Chad" were some of the comments you hear on all the affiliates. His act has worn thin.

It was just great when the Colts would go up to Cincy and Chad would score and do his little celebration, but the Colts would ultimately win the game. It takes a team Chad. He claims that he wants to go to a team that will win. Funny, I thought he was just happy getting into the endzone. Remember it’s all about Chad.

Another interesting happening this offseason happened just a couple days ago. KC trades Jared Allen to the Vikings for a 1st and 3 round pick. I’m scratching my head on this one trying to figure out who got the better end of this one. I guess we won’t know until we see how KC fares with the picks they obtained. As far as Minnesota goes they got a relentless DE that probably overachieves, but we’ll give you 100% effort. I feel like Allen and Aaraon Kampman are the same player.

Also of course the draft is this Sunday. I’m not too impressed with the talent in this years draft. The Colts don’t pick until Round 2 because of a trade they made last year to move up to pick Tony Ugoh. I’m thrilled with Ugoh. Plug him in at left tackle for 10 years a la Tarik Glenn. The Colts have a plethura of late picks, which Bill Polian always seems to find some gems.

Well who do you guys/gals hope your team is drafting in the first round?

Mel Kiper said he’d retire if Matt Ryan dropped below #8!
They also said that Dallas hasn’t drafted in the first round since 1997! I found that completely insane.

mel kiper makes me hate my life

other than that, i’m a lifetime browns fan and they should have a tremedous year if they can build on last year’s success. see you in january.

It is true the Browns have all the pieces in place to make a serious playoff push.

Oh, and why the hell is Brett Favre scheduled to be on the cover of Madden '09??

yeah. it’s gonna be a huge year IF they build on last year’s success. i don’t want to think last year was a fluke because they did have a great team. however, that winning season may have never happened had romeo not realized that charlie frye was a fucking joke of a QB. they benched him right before halftime in week 1 and traded him right after the game.

edwards and winslow will light it up this year.

that’s the first i’ve heard about this. i’m sure there is some corny reason.

THE VIKINGS DOMINATE THIS THREAD

MADIEU WILLIAMS, BERNARD BERRIAN, AND NOW JARED FUCKING ALLEN!!

division champs for sure, NFC Championship definitely is a possibility if Tarvaris learns to throw to the right team. And yes, I know thats a big IF.

I repeated the phrases “Super Bowl,” “Minnesota Vikings” and “2009” - in no particular order, mind you - in my head and it just didn’t sound right.

you just wait, my boy!!

I’m stoked about the Colts draft. You won’t hear a bunch of hype regarding their draft, but they had a solid draft. They added 3 offensive lineman, all of them centers I might add to help out at guard and add depth. Seeing as how we already have good depth at tackle this will help out at guard and center depth and we might have found a replacement for Jake Scott at RG in Pollack from Arizona State.

Then we added two linebackers one from Georgia Tech and another from Georgia. It’s the Colts way. Draft athletic linebackers in the 3rd round or later let them fly around and make plays, then let them go sign elsewhere for big money. Repeat. Polian is a genius I tell ya.

Also added two TEs, which will help with the loss of Ben Utecht. One is a pass catching TE from Kentucky and another a blocking guy from Virginia.

Got some WR from Division 3 who had a rediculous 40 time. KR maybe?

Then the kicker…Got Mike Hart in the 6th round. This made my day. Okay I realize he is not going to be a stud, but he is going to be a damn good backup running back. Perfect complement to Joseph Addai. Sorry Kenton Keith if you could catch a pass at the goalline we wouldn’t have needed to draft Hart. Getting arrested last week didn’t help matters either.

Well I can’t wait…I guess mini-camp is next.

Agreed. Polian makes nothing but solid decisions come draft time.

And Mike Hart can come in and give Addai a rest…he’s capable of being a solid NFL back.

I think the DIII guy you’re talking about is named Pierre Garcon. A French name if there ever was one…anyway the guy played at Mt. Union, which is like the holy grail of DIII football schools.

Hell yeah Mike Hart! He went to my high school but graduated a few years behind me. Glad to see some local talent make it to my team. I’m very happy with how the Colts drafted. The Jaguars went all or none for this season, hopefully the later. The Titans are awful at drafting and will finish in last in the South this year. It’s time for the Texans to make a move out of the cellar and into the Playoff Hunt. Cya in 4 months.

Go Lions!!!

I just noticed this was labeled as an “announcement” so it sticks above all the other threads, including the “stickied” ones.

Nothing against fee or the topic, but I’m removing this as an announcement…

The Browns made some fine choices considering…

I look at it like Quinn was our first-rounder this year.

Yes but if you add in the phrase “Tavaris Jackson” then you know WHY it doesn’t sound right.

As for the Lions draft, I liked the POSITIONS they took. I’m always about getting O-linemen and they needed a linebacker and I like how they waited til the 3rd round to get a Running back. Of course, because it’s Millen picking the players I’m worried if they’re the RIGHT players.

By the way, isn’t ESPN’s draft coverage the absolute worst? I swear guys like Jaws and Steve Young don’t have a clue about ANY player other than a quarterback. That’s ALL they talk about for hours and hours. Even worse was how they both had coniptions over how Chad Henne and Brian Brohm were falling. The second day was even worse since they had NO idea what to talk about so they just ranted more about Matt Ryan and other QBs. When any QB was finally taken in the second day their eyes would just LIGHT UP…these guys were SO excited that they could rant about a QB for another hour or so. Wow, it was bad.

And did you see that the Lions selected some dude from Army in the last round and there’s a rule that states that he won’t be sent to Iraq now that he’s been drafted. Well reports are that he’s going to Iraq anyway and his quote was “Well, even Iraq is better than the Lions” (cymbal crash)

Stevo

Um…What the hell is going on…Outside the Lines just reported that Marvin Harrison is linked to a shooting in Philadelphia…Apparently Harrsion owns like 50 guns and “allegedly” fired something like 7 shots from a handmade 50 caliber gun at a patron of his bar…This just doesn’t sound like him…

Suddenly my views on Chad Johnson are changing…Let’s go get him
