30 Years of Phish:Part One 83'-89'

Ha, they still played the shit outta Possum.

Bedding in the kick drum? Multipurpose milk crates?

Love it!

Great pics!

I’m a huge fan of the old school nerdy proggy phish. Gamehendge ftw!

Love the Townsend Family Park LivePhish release. One of my most listened to in my Phish archives.

The 90’s were definitely their peak but the material they were writing in their early days is really what sets them apart from everyone else, and gave them an excellent foundation to build upon for the decades to follow.

Looking at the stats, you have to wonder - how many undocumented/unrecorded shows did Phish play in the early years?

This is awesome.

Welcome back Jud!

Yeah this is just one reason it’s important to have Judson around.

I think the 80s is a forgotten time in Phish’s history. Of course it is, cuz they didn’t attract bigger crowds until the turn of the decade, but it’s amazing how much of their most fantastic, classic songs came before 1990. The years 90, 91 & 92 still saw some epic new material, but by and large, the Great Songs were written in the 80s.

Look at all the denim!! Often I find myself recognizing that I need new stage pants; jeans are for amaeturs. Wonder when they had that conversation. Wait, is Trey wearing jeans these days again?

Fishman has always been master of the TUCK

11-23-1985 “Whipping Post Jam” is one of the great things ever.

2 essential 80’s releases:

Fantastic for it’s banter (AcidLope is a must listen) and some epic jams (best DEG ever!)

Lot’s of Gamehendge songs and fantastic playin’!

available for weddings and bar mitzvahs

Listened to a chunk of a February 89 show last at the Front and holy crap, the kids were a force to reckoned with, I bet the majority of the people seeing them at the time knew they had the potential to be selling out MSG in a few years…this Camel Walk is fucking nutz, as well as the YEM

The Front, Burlington, VT

Set 1: The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkenu > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, The Curtain > Foam, Colonel Forbin’s Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Run Like an Antelope > Golgi Apparatus, Possum

Set 2: On Your Way Down > AC/DC Bag, You Enjoy Myself -> Camel Walk

Notes: This second set listing may be incomplete, as recordings that circulate cut during Camel Walk.

from The Front between 88-91 apparently-

Oh yeah and the weirdest thing about the show is Trey sounds like he could’ve been a 15 yr old boy vocally, I don’t listen to a lot of 80s stuff but he sounded completely different than I’ve ever heard him

This is from 12/31/93. Wrong thread I guess but Tom Marshall has been posting some old ones on his twitter thingy so I wanted to get them on here.

Marvin is amazing, but the leather jacket is way out there.

83-89 it is not.

just found this. gets choppy in the middle but straightens out pretty nicely. cool vid either way.
