3D?

Yeah, see that’s what I’m sayin. It gives me a headache. I’m all for people going crazy with the 3D, I just hope I keep having the option of 2D, because “real” when your body isn’t moving can make you puke.

I bought my current TV at the worst possible time. Right before the Hi-Def boom. So I still don’t have Hi-Def and I certainly don’t see myself having a 3D TV. I mean it’s cool in some instances. Places like Disney World, Universal Studios and other theme parks have attractions in 3D, which is cool, but I’m not so sure I need the Office in 3D or the local News. I mean I’m good with what we got.

Oh come on Glenn. You don’t really belive that. Sure, there are some dumb kids that are going to turn into dumb adults out there, but that’s hardly the fault of technology. Kids now have access to information and tools for learning that our parents could have only dreamed we would have, and so did we compared to our parents. Maybe as a society we are devolving, but I would hardly blame it on technology. You might be able to put together a correlation between technological advancement and our overall societal devolution, but I hardly believe that the technology is the cause of that devolution. In fact as far as I can tell it is one of the only areas in which our society is advancing. Blame war, blame economic disparity, blame diet and lack of exercise, but don’t blame technology as technology is seriously one of the few things making our world a better place.

I see where ICC is coming from and I tend to agree with him and you, Devin. I think the advancement of technology has always been a double-edged sword because of who we are. Technology is just what it is. It’s how we implement it, that gives it some meaning. The controlled use of radiation has prolonged thousands and thousands of lives for all the people who developed cancer. The controlled use of radiation has extinguished thousands and thousands of lives in the aftermath of weapons of mass destruction.

3D for the sake of 3D is pointless. Like ICC said, we live in 3D, so just live. Will perfecting the technology to the point where the action on your TV appears exactly like reality might be cool, but personally, I’m just getting into the HD world, so I don’t know whether I can even project beyond that right now. I just don’t need movie makers to add needless minutes to telling their stories just because they can justify the 3D technology. It will make car chases and explosions much more exciting, but that’s never been more important than telling a good story.

Eff 3D and eff HD. Turn your damn tv’s off and go LIVE! Why waste your life sitting idley in front of a box of moving pictures?? I have never understood why people care about the clarity of HD. I mean, it’s not like regular tv is snowy or blurred, lol.

I’m with Glenn. In fact, I wish the industrial revolution never happened. We would all be far more productive individuals as a society and we could quit inventing more high tech ways to kill eachother.

I totally understand Glenn’s point. Think about this: this country did vote for W not once, but TWICE!
Considering that, I suppose there is a " correlation between the “advancement” of technology and the ratio of fucktards to reasonable human beings on the planet."

Exactly. Correlation does not prove causation. It’s a fact. I don’t really think we’re getting dumber at all. In fact, quite the opposite is true. If we’re all turning into fucktards, then how come the past century has led to more development than any in history? If anything, we are acquiring knowledge too quickly and cannot compartmentalize it quickly enough before more knowledge is acquired, therefore things are run inefficiently.

But if you think we’re all getting dumber, I would love to see a comparison of the literacy rate from 1700 compared to now. I just don’t see how you could say we’re dumber as a whole than people were two or three hundred years ago.

Warning**** My rant below is not directed towards anyone or meant to cause harm or pain to anyone on the OKP…**** It is just a what if type of technology rant******************

Just my thoughts as I sit here with a new CFL light that is saving me 7 cents an hour on electric (that in turn means less waste stored in my local plant), while typing on my newer computer (that has a green friendly battery now)… Wait, my cell phone is showing me a text message… And I am listening to Phish with a decent set of speakers from a stream on the computer…

Technology is not ‘hurting’ the world as much as it is saving lives, helping people work and creating a place where if you ‘want’ options you have them… Some of the newer ways to treat Cancer today might have meant my Mother might be here today versus 1993 when she was hit with it (she passed in 1995 from Cancer and I have a friends who still have their parnets in the past 5 years from advancements in this area so…) … Quit playing the Wii, quit typing on the OKP or ‘Googling’ sites to download your Phish shows, quit watching live streams of Trey playing music etc…

Computers, I-pods, head phones to hear music, cell phones, newer guitar equipment, modern built homes (many with greener solutions and better parts), faster computer processors, cameras, video recording equipment, WIFI in hotels, scanners that allow quicker access to Phish shows, the vehicles you drive to get there, the fuel you buy to propell your car, the fact that you have an upload rate fast enough to post pics of you wearing an OKP shirt, and the OKP are all parts of better technology (We moved the site to a better operating board to hold it on, right?) and I would have to say if you’re opposed to the advancement of technology, then make sure to look at these items too…

Sure HD is newer and 3D is all the rage right now (again, see 1980, 1990 and 2000) but really? 25 years ago we got cable TV and a VCR, then we got a a tape player which took the place of my 8-track (Yes I am old enough and have listened to music since the dreaded 8-track), then someone got a CD player and then a walkman with FM radio, did you resent it then too?

Do you scoff at the newer lights CK5 used in 2009 for Phish?

Embrace it and use what makes you feel comfortable but to denounce it as ruining our kids? Look at their parents and start there before you blame something that ‘we’ control…Having an 18 year old child, I know we’re not ‘dumber’ and I see the tools my child was given to learn and they outweighed what I was given and made it possible for her to prepare for 2010… We’re not ‘dumber’ we are lazy and that is a whole other topic, but if you have a child or have the ability to interact with your brothers or sisters kids, you will see this. Have a family, start that path and go down it, technology makes it possible for my family to stay in touch while college, work and distance take its toll… It makes it possible to hear from my fmaily in Iraq and stay up to speed on my fave sports team.

Are the fads and styles retarded, sure at some points but so was the way we acted/dressed 10 years ago, even 20 or 30 or 40 etc…

Hooray for technology and the options it offers my career and my childs future. The options it offers me to follow my fave band and be apart of this place, hooray!

Without technology many of us would not have jobs or make the money we make so… Meh…

Just my thoughts on technology… There are good points and bad, I chose to type about everyday items I see, use or I know many of us use, this was not intended as a slight to anyone on these boards. I am sure there are 50 points to be made about the horrors or how it has ruined your life and you cannot believe what it did to you, and I am sure we will read those next…

I am off to upload some crispy new Blind Melon music Will sent me through the mail on CD for my I-Pod from my computer, to listen to through my crisp sounding headphones…

All this while going to a banquet tonight to help preserve our wildlife and land for years to come… This is an area where technology has been hurting us, but in the same breath WE created it and WE are also using technology to fix the issue… Went full circle and we are better for it…

I’d just like to say, for the record, that I’m all for technology. Anything that makes my life easier or more efficient is welcome, in my mind. It’s not the technology of 3D that bothers me. It’s the sensory overload and use of 3D as a replacement for a good story that I have a problem with.

^Hey man, lay off the 3D porn. I think we can all agree that only good can come from that.

I do not like porn movies either… But 3D porn is a thing to think about, it could change your mind?

 Great point. Don’t watch it then. It’s hardly something to be against. I’m indifferent to it myself. I am not against it. Maybe they will put a squirt gun on the t.v. so they can spray you with “fluids” during the money shot.

This could get interesting!

I think its all a little bittersweet in my book. Technology and all its components that is. . .

To quote Trey back in August, " . . .We’re gonna have an illiterate generation soon!" I think that’s what Glenn and others are talking about. Right now, Sony makes a product where you can buy books off the internet, downloading them to a particular machine to read. The IPhone and IPod Touch have the same capability. Now, in my opinion, the average consumer who purchases this product is not buying it to read. On the contrary, they are buying it because its new and edgy and a new gadget on the market. Americans are so focused on the gadget instead of what the gadget actually does: make reading books more functional and portable.

As a journalist and writer, the Sony E-Reader saddens me. Yes, I am one of those who loves my book shelf. I love opening the first page of a new book smelling the freshly printed ink, and Yes, getting that first whiff of a newly purchased newspaper. But I digress . . .

Do I believe IPods and Sony E-Readers and 3D movies will slowly turn our children in walking technical zombies or “illiterate fucktards”? Absolutely not. Like Ed said, this generation is in fact more intelligent than those that came before them. If they weren’t, we wouldn’t be able to use or invent such technology at all.

That said, I believe we need to find somewhat of a happy medium. We don’t need to become SO intelligent that we are beyond generations of our past. We don’t need to replace books or newspapers or print with Sony E-Readers. Afterall, William Faulkner once said, “The past is never dead. In fact, it’s not even past.” Yes, push forward, use our intelligence, embrace 3D technology and new technology!

But, don’t forget to " . . .Pick up a fucking book!"

i think its cool for some things but not everything.

If they want to show 3D IMAX presentations of huge spectacles like Avatar or Alice in Wonderland or U2, then that’s cool i guess.

but i really don’t need to see that kind of treatment on Crazy Heart or something.

i say, like everything, its cool in moderation.

Super Bowl in HD- ok.
Daily Show in HD- meh.

If you haven’t seen 3d in a few years…you are missing out.

but it really doesn’t matter much to me since i am Amish.

^ There are Amish people in Ft. Lauderdale? :wtf:

I can understand that those who do not get to see Phish at many festivals would want to keep the band in their mind as they have remembered… But, this 3D deal could be cool… I mean for those at the Indio festie, know that the scene and the place would make for a cool 3D set up if done right…

Not even close. Heck, even I still haven’t gotten one. And I just got a free 32-inch TV from my neighbor because she got a flat-screen. Why would I get a new TV now…this thing is 32-inches!!

As for the HD thing, its biggest strength is with sports. Anything on grass, hockey and basketball all look phenomenal on TV. I would get HD just for the sports alone…you can have it back for all the other shows.

Yeah, I heard it’s pretty weak in that game. In the end, I wouldn’t use that as the standard…you won’t see it in video games until a game REALLY focuses on it rather than a half-assed licensed product. It’s kind of like Avatar…try comparing that 3D to something like Spy Kids 3 and it’s a bit of a difference. In the end, I could see it having a bigger effect on video games since those are often more about effects and graphics than some movies.

And they may screw themselves with the 3D TVs. People are still getting into buying the HD ones and now they expect folks to shell out for 3D TVs and monitors? Not gonna happen. Also, if this thing is to take off they’ll HAVE to find a way to do it without the glasses…most people are not wearing those things to watch their TV everyday.

And is it a fad? Of course it is. You’ll get a few movies like Avatar and it’ll be used in action flicks but most movies still won’t have a need for it. Same with video games…it’ll maybe look nice but it won’t make or break the game and in the end it probably won’t be worth it.
