i love the bad shows! seriously, i do. they’re fascinating in a weird, disturbing way. i think coventry is just outstanding to listen to for it’s insane mix of horrible-ness and then it’s emotion-SEEPED jams!
i guess everyone’s taste is different, but i can definately hear the good within the bad. i think you always got an honest representation of what the guys in the band were going through, and that’s always been worth hearing for me…
I left and went back to my tent during Stash at Coventry. It was pretty bad. Me being exhausted was definitely part of it, but I didn’t see the point of struggling to stay at a show that sounded that bad.

Edit: Yeah, that’s a bad Stash. Trey doesn’t even try to compete with the audience during the “Whooooa-ooooooo” parts.
Also, after listening to the 10-30-98 Stash, Trey kinda does the same thing, he gets off by a bit, and eventually dies off with the “Maybe so, maybe not” parts. Maybe it’s just a Vegas thing?
I just listened to the Stash and I honestly don’t think it’s that bad. Trey slows down the last lines, and it does sound a lot darker, but I don’t think it is bad. But the Girls, Girls, Girls really might be the worst thing I have ever heard.
Wow, the vocal jam is really, really fucked up. That’s just lame.
Although the most ironic moment of the weekend goes to the 4/16 “Back On The Train”.
If you guys think bad shows are fascinating, definitely check out the Hampton '04. I’ll write an entire post/thread about it eventually, but during the second set it feels like Trey is either fucked up, something is wrong with his guitar, or he’s trying to play in a way he’s never played before…maybe all three!! The Stash jam is crazy; it feels like everybody is playing completely oblivious of each other, making for an intense and fascinating jam that you will either hate or love. The segue into NICU is great, though.
I bring up this show mainly because of the Crowd Control. Trey was being REAL emphatic with his vocals and playing on this one!!
i was at all 3 vegas shows. the last 2 i thought were really good. there was alot of high points for me. the first night was def. almost unlistenable. i wanted to puke during the dwd.
I’d like to get my hands on these shows, I haven’t heard them either…

I was there too and I almost agree with your review. I do think there were some good points on the first night like The Moma Dance, Stash>Timber, and Slave to the Traffic Light.

4/15/04 is…cool.
on the way back from vegas i thought something terrible was going to happen. no joke. i really didn’t think they could continue on with shows like that. seriously, if they consistenly played shows like 4/15, who would see them?
^ Yeah but if they played consistently like they played at any show who would see them? What makes Phish great is not knowing what to expect from show to show. I shouldn’t speak my mind as I haven’t heard 4/15, but I have heard 4/17 and I don’t think that it is that bad. I’d rather be at that show then almost any show by any band ever. (other than Phish…there are many phish shows I would have rather been at)…
phish made a name for themselves by being a “jam” band.
the majority of bands out there dont jam, and people are always filling seats.
i love Radiohead, and have followed them through Japan, Europe and the US even though they very rarely dig deep in their song bag.i see them because i get a major thrill of seeing them perform, and feel like i am actually seeing “rockstars” and not just another phish show.if phish were like every other rock act out there, people would still go see them.
that was once true,regarding setlists and antics, but it shouldnt be up in the air if phish was gonna bring their chops on any particular night.
if you went to see the Stones or U2, you expect them to play a solid show.what if the Edge was fucking up your favorite guitar solo night after night?you’d prolly be pissed.i think as time went on, we were forced to accept the sloppiness.
i skipped a ton of PH shows because i “didnt have to accept it”.
personally, i think the 'o4 vegas shows are in the bottom 10 shows that they ever played.
